I expected a truly informed book of WWII aircraft carrier combat. That is, I wanted to know how the two sides used the assets they had available and why they chose to use them in that way. I wanted to know how a carrier group goes about trying to protect itself while trying to inflict harm on its enemies. I wanted to know what tactics the torpedo bombers adopted to successfully approach enemy shipping and what tactics the defending aircraft used to destroy the torpedo planes before they could launch while avoiding their own flak. None of these things are presented. For example, Imperial Japanese Naval air operations officers Genda and Fuchida are referred to as geniuses but I have no idea why. What was it about the way they chose to do plan air operations that qualified them as geniuses?What we have here is a fairly standard treatment of the most famous WWII Pacific aircraft carrier engagments. I wanted to feel the anti-aircraft gunfire riddle my wings and smell the blood on a burning flight deck. I wanted to know what formations the various aircraft used on various missions and why. I wanted to know how it was possible that a pilot could maintain such good navigational skills while engaged in life or death combat that he could rendevous with a ship that was no longer where it was when he flew off the deck. Instead we get that a certain squadron launched from a certain carrier attacking a certain other carrier and either did or did not achieve a number of hits.Admittedly, I am spoiled having just read Shelby Foote's excellent Civil War. Oh, what might have been! If the author had drawn character portraits as concisely and described battles as vividly as Foote, that would have been a book!

The greatest wwII book ever written. Degan is a masterful writer. A must for any wwII history buff.

So, this book has nobody named Caliban and there isn't a War. That means it is probably a reference to Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'. This internally conflicted characteristic makes Holden a more interesting and substantial protagonist than he was in the first book though it does produce some difficulties on board the Rocinante.Fans of the television show would be gratified to see Chrisjen Avasarala finally making her appearance in the literary version of The Expanse. Though she is more vulgar in the book than in SyFy's adaptation, the core of the character is there...a ruthless and often cold political force to be reckoned with who manages to compartmentalize her personal and professional lives with impressive skill.The new characters added into the narrative are well-developed and easily as interesting as those from the first novel, which is something I hope they can keep up through the additional books in this series (including the ones as yet unwritten).It says something about the intense and dangerous nature of the events unfolding in this book that an alien biological machine terraforming Venus according to entirely unknown programming takes a backseat in the minds of the characters and that same dismissal carries over to the reader...at least until the end, when it can no longer be ignored.I am very much looking forward to reading the next installment after the way this one ends and I am even more so looking forward to seeing how the television adaptation will tackle things as the events of this book make it onto the screen during either the latter portion of season two or the beginning of season three depending on how they put everything together.Abaddon's Gate takes The Expanse series through the first tentative steps toward becoming a full-fledged, interstellar space opera. From this point on in the series, humanity will no longer be confined to the solar system we're all too familiar with and the surrounding void between our local system and other stars.This is, surprisingly, the first time religion really gets brought into the books...and there is quite a bit of it, as well there should be. This is a series of novels that is largely predicated on first contact, and that would damn well shake up religious thought all over the world. Not only are we dealing with first contact, but first contact with an unknown species that was around billions of years before we came down from the trees and who have the ability to manipulate matter and energy in ways we have only ever imagined possible. We stumbled upon something truly alien to us, waiting out at the edges of our solar system and disastrously attempted to weaponize it because, of course we would...we're notoriously short-sighted and impulsive when it comes to thinking up ways to kill one another in real life and the odds of that changing over the hundreds of years separating us from the fictional future of The Expanse are pretty slim...and if none of this had an impact on us as far as theology is concerned, these books would require far too much suspension of disbelief.By the time Abaddon's Gate starts off, there is a giant ring structure (assembled on Venus by an alien intelligence before lifting from that planet's surface) between the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, looming there and just waiting for us to cross the threshold...and it stands to reason that Holden would be one of the first to cross over into somewhere truly awe inspiring in what it represents.Along with the novelty of having a religious perspective tossed into the mix we get a whole new cast of characters to populate the narrative since Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are the only major ones carried over from the previous novels into this one...and none of them feel like throwaway bit parts, which is something the authors have excelled at so far through the series.This third volume of the series answers a number of questions that have been collecting since the first novel, but it certainly adds just as many new ones that will hopefully be just as exciting to answer in reading what follows.

CALIBAN'S WAR is the second installment of the Expanse series, which compromises the majority of Season Two of the series. Unlike with the first volume, I read this before watching the second season and I'm glad I did. I felt my viewing of the second season of the Expanse was enriched by my reading how the author originally intended the story to go.The premise for the Expanse series is it's roughly two hundred years in the future and mankind has spread to the rest of the solar system. Earthlings live on an overpopulated and resource stretched planet but in relative comfort, Martians live in a militarized communist society, and the Belters live in abject poverty in order to serve the needs of the two settled planets.Our heroes actually start in a pretty good place, however. The protomolecule which was the focus of the first volume has been neutralized, the Rocinante crew has a job as pirate hunters, and neither Earth nor Mars is particularly interested in wiping out the other. This all goes to hell, though, when Ganymede Station is attacked by an unknown force that wipes out a group of Martian Marines.Caliban's War introduces some interesting new characters with Bobbie Draper, a beautiful but physically intimidating Marine, who suffers from survivor's guilt after the aforementioned attack as well as Avarasala, the foul-mouthed spymaster of the U.N. Both characters are every bit, if not more entertaining than the original protagonists of Leviathan's Wake.The crew of the Rocinante actually gets a lot of character development in this book too. Holden is coping with the loss of his naivite and idealism. Naomi is dealing with the fact Holden isn't quite the man she started dating. We also get a good amount of new information regarding Amos as well as Alex. Amos is one of my favorite characters in the Expanse and this book highlights being from Earth doesn't mean you're not from a hellish childhood surrounded by poverty.I loved their sections of the book and how they brought the perspectives of their respective planets to the forefront. Is Detective Miller missed? Incredibly. He was one of my favorite parts of the original series and his absence is notable. However, that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy this book a great deal.However, there is a number of problems with the book which I think hurt its storyline overall. The first of these is the fact this feels a bit like a video game plot. Someone is using the protomolecule to make super-soldiers ala Resident Evil or the Alien movies. This, despite the fact the protomolecule is completely beyond anything human technology can command. We're not talking centuries beyond human technology but billions of years so the idea it can be used to make monsters under the control of Jules Pierre Mao is ridiculous.I also wasn't a big fan of Praxis, the scientist whose missing daughter is the impetuous for the plot. He's an okay character but doesn't really have any layers other than, "Find daughter" and "grow space crops." Even so, it's nice to get a sense of the Rocinante crew by the fact when he comes to them and asks them to help him find his probably-dead child, they immediately drop everything and help him try to find her.In conclusion, Caliban's War is a decent continuation of the Expanse novels even if I felt it was a bit derivative of other sci-fi franchises. I would have been more interested in continued focus on the Mars-Earth-Belter relationships versus more study of the protomolecule. The new characters more than make up for this, though, as does expanding on the existing heroes. Too many books don't continue expanding their leads in sequels, just repeating the behavior of previous works. That isn't the case here.8/10

The Neon Rain is the first installment in the Dave Robicheaux series. I have read all of the books in the series as they were released but recently decided to return to the well and reread the first installment. JL Burke evokes New Orleans and the old south with all of its depravity and beauty in lyrical prose that is pure poetry, while still turning out a first class suspense-crime novel. This book has all Robicheaux's demons on display, a corrupt New Orleans Police force, his booze-addled, violent partner, Clete Purcell, the downtrodden sharecroppers and minorities, the criminal and political elite who Dave despises, and Dave's own personal demon: alcoholism. His relationship with Purcell is far more confrontational than in the later books, and his relationship with Annie is just beginning. The violence is there but not as prolific as in later books, and the booze genie comes out of the bottle one more time with a lot of action and degradation to follow. A pair of great psychotics that don't compare with some of the later creations, but still rack the tension up to 11. One of the best series going in my opinion and it was a treat to revisit these characters in the formative year.

Had never heard of James Lee Burke until I read about him in Gardens & Guns. Ordered this book first, to give him a 'trial run'. Wow! Proceeded to order the next five in the series. Love Burke's writing. He expresses what he sees better than anyone I've read in a long time. His descriptions of the bayou, the streets of New Orleans, the people of every ilk that populate Louisiana, are eye-opening. He captures emotions and situations with such clarity. The opening scene in Neon Rain, when Robicheaux is speaking with a convict he knows and who is scheduled to die in the electric chair in a few hours - you can smell the sweat of fear, the desperation and stale smoke, the accused's last grasp for some kind of absolution. I have hours of good reading ahead and can hardly wait to start the next book.

This is the first of the acclaimed Dave Robicheaux mysteries. It's a gritty, thrilling first person noir crime novel told in the edgy and poetic voice of the New Orleans cop Robixheaux. The story has action from the first page and it's less nitty gritty police procedural and more one man vs. evil. Robicheaux is a fallen human like all of us but he seeks the truth in his battle against evil in the form of drug cartels, mobsters, and every other manner of scum. I'm completely hooked on this series now and in love with the vibrant prose of James Lee Burke. New Orleans becomes just as much a character in this book as Robicheaux himself. Lots of great side characters and dialogue, too.

The premise is a good one: New Orleans detective finds a dead body on his day off and that leads him to be the target of an organized crime hit. But the amount of violence is gratuitous--every scene has a violent incident--and the detective is universally misunderstood by the pantheon of corrupt bullies that constitute everyone from small-time porn movie house operators, to organized crime bosses to federal agents to his own fellow cops. The obligatory love story doesn't have enough depth to be convincing. And the amount of street lingo and cop slang used sometimes borders on the comical. The descriptions of the city and the lake on which he lives are vivid and enjoyable. The plot, however, would benefit from less effort to portray the deepest depths of human depravity at the expense of an interesting unravelling of a mystery.

Terrible novel from a pure hack. The people talk the entire story into existence. It's 270 pages of endless, unrealistic dialogue where people don't act naturally but exist purely for exposition. Plus, it's racist too. Here's an early line that shows the author's lack of ability: "The second man was short and olive-skinned, with elongated Semitic eyes and a hawk nose." Didn't know eyes could be a racial identifier? They can if the author is racist.None of this has the ring of truth. You won't believe the narrator is a cop, or that the author knows anything about law enforcement. I buy cookbooks about three times a year with the intention of cooking up a storm, but once I look at the directions - the excitement disappears. Maybe it's an Aries rebel thing, but I never follow a recipe to a tee. After skimming through Melba's cookbook while I stood by the mailbox - I couldn't help but notice Melba's beautiful smile on the cover. It was as if Melba's was saying - "Orsayor, Get out of your comfort zone and try some of my recipes." When I finally settled down from my busy day - I picked up Melba's cookbook and started to read. The next thing I knew I was writing out my grocery list and bookmarking pages.My husband laughed at me because he had witnessed me getting excited about recipes and quitting before I started. This time was different - I bought the ingredients and began my Melba's takeover.Melba shares with the readers how she got started with her love of cooking. She also shares the epiphany she received while traveling on an airplane in 2005. The author shares her "Five Lessons for Life In and Out of the Kitchen" - #4 hit home for me. This recipe gave my bacon life!Fried Green Tomatoes - 5/5FYI: This was my husband first time trying Fried Green Tomatoes. I have made it before in the past but he always turned his nose up at it. Not this time!!Honey Suckin' Hot Wings - 5/5I was so nervous making the Hot Honey sauce for the wings. Even though the recipe wasn't difficult - I knew the sauce was an important element for the wings. Also, my husband would give me his honest opinion of the sauce was nasty. We don't sugarcoat when it comes to food. LOL!I screamed and did a little twerk when I took my first bite - because it was so good. I'm the first person to run to the local wing spot for my favorites. Not anymore! I just ordered this book to add to my collection. I borrowed it from the library the other day and yesterday, I made the smothered pork chops, classic corn bread, and country collard greens. And may I say, I put my foot in it and it was damn good! The recipes were easy to follow with ingredients that are easy to find, and I really loved her insights and advice on cooking. Melba puts her own flavor/flare on American comfort food and gives the reader the most delicious and delightful surprises. When I write my cookbook, guess whose blueprint I will emulate!

Great book. 90% recipes. My daughter and I made the oven fried chicken, candied bacon, honey bun cake, Yams for Mother's Day and they thought I hired a caterer. Great buy.

I've thoroughly enjoyed Melba's cook book. I've tried 4 recipies so far and they were all a home run. I'm not the best cook, so Melba's cook book is my secret weapon.

Love this cook book. I have made multiple things from this book and they all turn out delicious. I have brought other cookbooks in the past, but this book is southern at its best. The fried chicken marinated in the buttermilk leaves the chicken crispy and moist.

This is a fun way of exploring different jobs or vocations for your 2 - 5 year old preschooler.The green peaple and their different expressions, accessories (like scooters, pom poms, microscopes or saxophones) and jobs are fun to explore. The colors in the book are bright pastels and the author-illustrator clearly took pleasure in this creation.The most unique feature of this book is the use of jobs instead of animals for words the letters start with. Instead of ants/apes/apples for "A", you get acrobats, artists and astronauts.This is a fun way to learn ABC's with your child. Perfect for bedtime stories. Perhaps they'll dream of being an astronaut, quarterback or scientist!

This book is so cute and fun! The illustrations are so detailed that they bring a lot of life and personality to each pea. My 18 month old daughter loves to read this book and talk about what the peas are wearing and doing, which is why I RECOMMEND BUYING THE LARGER VERSION!! It is well worth the price difference to be able to see the little nuances of each little pea without having to bring the book closer to your face (which also makes it harder to read together). We love this book!! It'll make a great addition to your little one's library!

My 1 year old son is a bit young to be introduced to the ABCs but he loves books and when I saw this one I knew I wanted it for when he's older. He does enjoy it but we haven't made it all the way through yet. We usually get halfway through before he closes it and crawls away. That is his age though. The book is adorable and I'm glad to have it on his bookshelf for when he grows into it.

LMNO Peas in trouble! Peas up here, peas down there, astro-peas and painter-peas, all so cute and brightly colored. Seriously, this book is adorable and it's a nice vocab book. It's best suited for your two year olds, up to three would be okay, and you can hand it to your kindergartner and teach them all those fantastic little professions those busy peas have. It's not fantastic to read to your highly impatient 1.5 year olds, but if you're an avid reader to your child I'd suggest picking it up anyway. Who knows, they may love seeing all those little peas!

We really liked the 1-2-3 Peas book so naturally this was next on our list. The pictures are just as cute and detailed and while I personally prefer the 1-2-3 Peas book to this one, the LMOPeas book is a welcome addition to our book collection! We recommend these books as presents for new parents-to-be. For the first 12 months, I think I enjoyed reading these books and looking at the pictures much more than my child!

My son is 19 months. We have been reading The Green Pea series for a few months. This book and the color one is his favorite. This book goes through the alphabet and different careers you can become later. It is also very colorful. I would definitely recommend!

Really cute little book. The only problem is that the font size of the text is small enough that I really need my reading glasses to read this to my granddaughter, and I don't always plan ahead and have them nearby. That is the one change I would make. (The letters of the alphabet are quite large; no problem reading those!) Otherwise, it is super cute.

Every since my son received this book a few weeks ago he has poured over it morning and night, discovering something new each time, telling me what those peas are up too, asking to have it in the middle of the night... you get the picture. With a whimsical air, Baker illustrates each letter with cute little peas acting out different activities beginning with that sound. Biking, Voting, Volunteering, Parachuting, Bathing, Climbing... on and on. My son particularly LOVES the tiny lady bug that is on the end papers and hidden on each spread... look hard!

My two-year-old's favorite book! he loves the adventures on every page and the added bonus of hunting for the hidden lady bug. If you need something enjoyable for a young reader, I highly recommend this board book (or any in the pea collection). all have been well-loved by the little one, and the adults (who enjoy finding something clever in each of the pictures).

Thank you Nick Wilgus! Oh, man, this book is great. I love the main characters and the dystopian world the poor kids find themselves in. The battle they are fighting due to some unexpected visitors to the planet is scary as hell, and the creep factor on the aliens is off the charts. But what I love most about THIS IS HOW IT ENDS, (Deadworld Book One) is the excellent writing. The deft portrayal of the characters. The easy unfolding of the plot. And yes, even the book cover is perfect. I'll be sitting here waiting for Book 2, Nick, so I hope you've got it ready to go. I'm in no mood to wait. You can't just leave Rory and Billy hanging like this. Or me. There's a war to be waged. Let's get to it.

In the beginning we have no idea what has happened, neither do the boys. I'm not a great fan of alien-zombie type fiction, and chose this only because the author is Nick Wilgus. Not disappointed.The two main characters, though teens, are engaged in very adult situations. The fact that several previous reviewers look anxiously to reading the follow up book of this story speaks volumes about the author's skill in developing interesting and realistic characters while presenting a fascinating "edge of your seat" plot. Superb writing.

Okay...wait. This definitely ends in a cliffhanger and there’s no sequel yet? This story was really good, but I’m going to be massively disappointed in this author if he doesn’t tie up loose ends and give us a conclusion. I’m waiting.....

This Is How It Ends is an adventurous read, I really enjoyed how the tale unfolded; the story would make and excellent graphic novella. Mr Wilgus creates excellent imagery, yet leaves enough that the reader can put themselves in the role of one of the characters. I am not sure how I would categorize this story, Sci-fi, romance, coming of age.... there is some light sexual content, put nothing graphic and some violence, but also nothing to intense.

What a great story, but I realize this was published a few years ago. When will the next book be out? I'd love to see what happens from here.

This is a great book, and I *need* book two now. I liked how "real" the characters were, and the sparks between Billy and Rory, and Rory's evolution over time vs. his upbringing. I also enjoyed the writing style, it seemed very conversational and was easy to read, but still kept me interested, even without constant bad things happening (though a lot of bad things did occur in the story).

It came in like a lion and went out like a lamb. In other words, it started off good but tricked out in the end. At least we know the author can write.

This book is mostly legal cases but they are very relevant to the security world. It's not a difficult read if you have a basic understanding of law. You don't need to have taken a law class or be an attorney to understand this book. What you do need are 1) a desire to learn a bit of security law and some of the law methods, and 2) a desire to learn about some of the key legal cases that can impact interpretation of laws in security operations. Understanding these few cases will help the security manager understand some of the possible legal nuances of laws that directly impact security. Pastor breaks each case down into easily digested pieces for impacts against the case, law and the correlation between the two.I definitely recommend this book to Security Managers, Security Management students and Attorneys who have clients involved security operations. Any of these people will benefit from understanding the information Pastor presents in this book. This book already has a permanent place in my library of security management books in my office, one that I've used more than once.

Book provided great insight to the legal woes of Security Administration

This book primarily consists of real legal cases that pertain to each chapter/subject. Great book for the Law Student’s library. My complaint is that the used book I bought had coffee stains through the first 5 chapters. I guess torts of a personal nature (chapter 5) put the prior owner to sleep. I hope that was coffee….it could have made them sick.

I loved this book. For me, it was about slowing down and being in the moment and now I'm trying to embrace that more often. But, definitely, Beth Ricanati, MD, has taught me to stop, think and be present. I use her challah recipe every Friday now and while I'm making it, pounding it, I'm focused on making this challah for the people I love. We all lead crazy busy lives and this book says STOP, slow down and make challah, a traditional bread for the Jewish sabbath. But seriously, this book is for anyone, male or female, any religion, any ethnicity, who just needs to SLOW DOWN. It's mental health cleansing.

I am so grateful to Beth for writing this book, her thoughtfulness and gentle humor were exactly what I didn't know I needed in the midst of a busy life and crazy world. She expresses an honesty that makes the reader feel like they are having a conversation with her over tea. I so appreciate the journey she takes us on from a young girl who is eager to find her life's "calling" through her love of art and eventually, medicine, a journey that has led to this lovely book.While I was raised Catholic and have not yet baked Challah without help from friends, I so appreciate how she makes the reader feel personally invited to this sacred ritual that has been part of the lives of millions of Jewish people. We all have rituals, spiritual or otherwise, in our daily lives, but the question is whether or not we take time to find the meaning in some of these rituals. Beth invites us, through her own experiences, to make time once a week to intentionally pause, reflect and find the healing and meaning in a ritual that is designed to nourish us and our loved ones. And most importantly, a ritual that brings us together with others - in a world that can often feel so separated through social media and busy schedules, being with others is sometimes the best medicine of all.Here's the thing, I often read these reviews to find a connection in what other reviewers are saying. She describes the friendships she’s formed in this passion, and touts the benefits of baking challah for strengthening her community. Beth is a smart physician and adheres to a healthy lifestyle. She provides her insights into the health benefits of each ingredient in her recipes. I was moved by Dr. Ricanati's personal journey and how she became more present through the ritual of challah baking. Dr. Beth Ricanati’s book Braided is a fun, easy read of one woman’s journey to figure out how to manage it all... a balancing act. She realized that by stopping each week to take time out for herself was the best medicine she could self-prescribe. Baking and making challah is restorative and healing and allows us the opportunity to connect with a greater community and disconnect from our busy lives...and of course we wind up with something delicious as the end result. For Beth, it’s not “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. But rather “A challah each week gives us the presence we seek”. I am truly inspired by her words and inspired to start making my own challah each week!!

Like challah, this memoir is a wonderful mixture of ingredients: life's lessons, Jewish rituals and a surefire recipe.

Such a delightful, inspiring book.... I loved it and am reading again already! Dr. Ricanati shares her expert thoughts and her personal stories in such a beautiful and informative memoir. Just reading the book itself was a great way for me to slow down, focus on "being present," and carve out time to practice mindfulness and ritual. Since reading the book, I have been inspired to create my own personal rituals, one of which is baking challah every week! Dr. Ricanati's recipe and tips on baking challah were easy and very accessible even for someone like me who is not a baker. And I loved her personal stories about how rituals like this can make a house a home.I also think this book is a great gift, and I have bought it for all of the women in my family and my closest friends for the holidays.... I can't say enough great things about this book!!
