In the early eighteenth century a number of the great pirate captains joined forces, including Blackbeard, Black Sam Bellamy, and Charles Vane. This infamous "Flying Gang" was more than simply a band of thieves: Many of its members were sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves who turned to piracy as a revolt against the conditions they suffered on ships and plantations. Together they established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote. For a brief, glorious period the pirate republic was enormously successful. At its height it cut off trade routes, sacked slave ships, and severed Britain, France, and Spain from their New World empires. The Royal Navy went from being unable to catch the pirates to being afraid to encounter them at all. Imperial authorities and wealthy shipowners denounced the pirates as the enemies of mankind, but huge numbers of common people saw them as heroes. Finally one man volunteered to pacify the pirate’s Bahaman lair and destroy any who resisted -- Woodes Rogers, a famous privateer himself and scion of a powerful merchant family. Drawing on extensive research in the archives of Britain and the Americas, Colin Woodard tells the dramatic untold story of the Pirate Republic that shook the very foundations of the British and Spanish Empires and fanned the democratic sentiments that would one day drive the American revolution.

This is well written and entertaining. It seems to be based on historical facts and not speculation., Many "pirate books" seem to suffer from the authors' desire to merely speculate on personal motivations, and some even betray personal or social bias in their reporting. I do not get the sense that this is true of Mr. Woodard, and I'm grateful for that.

Probably the best book written about the pirates who raised havoc in the Caribbean and the Eastern Coast of North America from Charleston to Maine. They're all here. Samuel Bellamy, Edward Thatch (Teach), the infamous 'Blackbeard', Charles Vane and the 'gentleman pirate' Stede Bonnet whose despite a total lack of maritime skills enters into piracy and is rewarded with failure after failure in his miserable attempts at the trade.There are many more men (and women) who engage in piracy and the culmination of their demise by the efforts of Woodes Rogers, the Governor of the Bahamas, himself a tragic figure in the long run.Colin Woodward has gone to great lengths to detail the short careers of these people and their successes as well as failures with their pillages and subsequent 'booty' taken in these raids. What surprised me is most anything was 'treasure' to the pirates. Forget the gold, silver and pieces of eight stories you've heard. Sure that was the stuff to have but cloth, silk, flour, wine, bread, livestock and even barrels of nails and wood were taken as well. Pirate captains were elected by their crews. Do well and manage to raid commerce vessels whose holds contained marketable goods and you kept your position as leader of the crew. Have repeated failures (life Stede Bonnet) and you could find yourself either voted out and back as a regular crew member or worse, contest your ouster and have the crew dump you on the nearest sandbar or uninhabited island as you stood watching your ship and former comrades sail off in the distance. I also never knew that pirates slaughtering crew members of ships they raided was a rarity. Most pirates would attempt to get these sailors to join their ranks (piracy was much more lucrative than being a sailor on a merchant vessel) or some were impressed into it because of a needed skill like a surgeon, carpenter or seasoned deck hand. After cleaning out the hold of a ship sometimes the captain was given a token payment for the cargo or he and his crew were set ashore somewhere desolate. Usually a place they would be found long after the pirates were gone. In most cases their ship was either seized and added to the pirate fleet, burned to the waterline or in many cases kept by the pirates and the captain and crew given a smaller vessels from the pirate fleet that had been seized earlier and sent on their way.This book is a terrific read and chock full of details. Well worth the money spent.

I love this book!!! As a history buff and adventurer, I found The Republic of Pirates to be a thrilling education of an era all too often overly romanced in the movies and tv programs. The true stories backed by documentation of those who were there are so far more exciting than fiction. All the stories herein are told in such a way that it was difficult to put the book down. I love the footnotes, proof of sources, and all the hard work that went into this book! Excellent and many thanks to the author for not taking the lazy route in putting this together. I highly recommend this book for any who want to know the real story of some of the most notorious pirates in history, how they lived, what inspired them and ultimately what led to their demise. This will be a reference in my library to return to many times in the future. Thank you Colin Woodard for such a fabulous book.

An extraordinary tale about extraordinarily lives. I almost ran out of pages on my notebook and learned more than I expected. Fascinating stuff.I regard this book with mixed emotions. On one hand I loved the information and was impressed with the level of detail. On the other I couldn't help but think that the book needed a more efficient approach. Reading this book is laborious due in lart to the dry writing style and it also contains unneeded material that's best fitted in the footnote section.Except from my notes:This book helped me strip the eye patch and introduced me to the real people behind the legends. Captains like Sam Bellamy (Black Sam) believed that their deeds were justified and even fancied himself a Robin Hood. Edward Thatch aka Blackbeard was the stereotypical pirate. He embraced the rugged appearance to the point of having fire and smoke emanate from his hat in order to scare his rivals into submission.

A very good read. It's rare to find an historical non-fiction that's both engaging and informative. The narrative is both gripping and suspenseful enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, without the author committing the "sin" so many historians do, namely, of omniscience. It's well-researched, and well-written. Reading this, it's easy to see how, if things had gone just little differently at so many junctures, independence could have been declared in North America 50 some years before 1776.

I am really enjoying doing a daily reading from this book along with the Bible. It is a great and inspiring way to start my day.

A little depressing and a little too hell, fire, and brimstone for me.

I have only just started this book (it is a daily devotional) but so far am liking it. It gives 3 Bible references to read which will enable one to read the whole Bible in a year. I was not expecting this. The devotion readings are fairly short but pithy. I think I will enjoy using this book over the coming year.

I end every day with this gem. It's wonderful.

This is a wonderful devotional! There are many quotes and stories of various Celtic saints - some familiar and some not. There is a suggested reading from the Old Testament, Psalms and New Testament for each day. There are prayers, poetry, wise sayings, wonderful teachings. I've used devotionals by other 'Christian writers and this is my favorite!

This book was my first introduction to posing, and on the whole I really enjoyed it.Pro: The material is great. Lindsay Adler is an amazing photographer, and she has a real knack for both explaining things clearly and visually illustrating what she's talking about with do/don't images, pull-back shots when necessary, and an occasional bit of diagramming on top of an image. The key to this book vs. the kind of static guides to different poses I've tried looking at before is that she's not giving you a list of positions to contort people into, she's laying out a set of basic principles you can use to (a) figure out how you want someone to look, and then (b) arrange them into a position that fulfills that look you're going for. And then at the end of the chapter she'll give you a small list of positions you can contort people into, just in case you lack the imagination to get started on your own ;)Neither pro nor con: While this book is pretty substantial size-wise, it's still not nearly comprehensive, which you come to realize pretty quickly it simply couldn't be without being a whole lot bigger. However, given the amount of material, I found some of the content choices suboptimal, personally. Including an entire chapter on boudoir posing seemed like an unusual choice while what I would expect to be some more common scenarios--especially working with children and posing non-family groups--were left out. Of course, if you shoot a lot of boudoir that's great for you, so ymmv. By the end of the book I kind of came out with the feeling that this was less a comprehensive posing guide and more of an introduction and long form advertisement for the copious amount of instructional video material she has online. Which I have to admit I fell for; I've since bought three of her CreativeLive courses.Con: The editing in this book is very sloppy, which is what kept this from being a five star review. There are several places in the book where the figure numbers she refers to don't actually match the images she's talking about. e.g. she'll say "The problem with image 3.19 was [x] and I fixed it in image 3.20 by doing [y]," but the two images she's talking about will actually be 3.17 and 3.18. Presumably in this case an image was added removed and the references in the text not updated.Worse yet, at times the text will refer to an image that's not actually present under any numbering, or an image will have the wrong caption directly underneath it. These may seem like minor issues, but it can be very confusing for a beginner to read something, look at the referenced image, see that the two don't match up, and then take quite a bit of time to try to figure out if the book is wrong or if you're just badly misunderstanding what it is you're supposed to be looking at.There's also an entire section of chapter 3 (on problematic expressions) that's alluded to, but then the chapter just abruptly ends without the promised section. I assume this is because an editor axed that part of the chapter but forgot to remove the intro text for it.

Lindsay Adler has been featured on many CreativeLive events and certainly has a clear and concise manner of sharing her expertise. I do own several "posing" books, but this material has hundreds of images where she describes the starting point, potential weak points of an image, and how it may be improved. Not only does the book describe how to pose women (and men) in a variety of settings (portraits, couples, boudoir) it describes how to best photograph different body types. It is not always all about re-posing the model, it may be involve different camera angles, focal lengths, apertures and lenses. Little tips like avoiding a double chin when photographing a couple kissing is a detail that some other books may forget to mention. It's not really about memorizing 1,000 poses, it is more about understanding some core concepts and then applying them to whomever you photograph.

This book is absolutely vital for understanding the subtle differences in posing. I've got a very good understanding of how to use my camera, and a decent idea of how to do lighting, but I was sorely lacking in terms of how to pose people. After reading Lindsay's book on Posing a second time, I wholeheartedly recommend this gem to anyone that photographs people. The book is comprehensive, well written, cleverly designed with training skills and a plethora of examples of what works, what doesn't and why. As you read, you will find yourself getting better at finding posing issues and how to correct them. Simply put, you will understand posing better and produce higher quality work because of it.I truly believe Lindsay is one of the top photography instructors out there today. Her method of teaching relates to everyday photographers and advanced pros as well. If you happen to follow her Instagram or Website, you'll notice she regularly updates her strong portfolio of images. Somehow, she still manages to produce yet more impressive work as the years pass by. An impressive accomplishment that has led to many photography awards and strong industry recognition and accolades.Buying this book is a given. It is a 'must own' and perhaps the new Bible on posing. I would highly recommend you check out Lindsay's other material and books out there. I personally have learned a tremendous amount from her via her books, seminars and videos. She is constantly travelling and teaching. Topics including lighting - both standard and high impact creative, posing for all scenarios and body types, shooting in poor conditions, processing, quick and advanced retouching techniques, business essentials and the list goes on. I am a big fan of her work, work ethic and charming personality. Her book delivers and you'll be glad you bought it!

The poor rating I am providing here is related to the print quality of the paperback version (and not the book contents). The book is well organized and covers most of the important topics related to fiber optics; however, it's almost impossible to read more than a couple of pages without eye fatigue and headache. There are many technical books on the market that are offered in both paperback and hardcover versions, where you don't really notice a big difference in print quality. A basic quality control would have convinced the author to not offer this version in its current form.Another important note: be aware that the author has offered this 2015 edition as a reprint of the 2005 version. In other words, the book content has not been updated based on the latest advances in fiber optics. This can be misleading to the reader, especially if someone is looking for a more recent publication.

Fast delivery, and affordable price. But the print quality is very poor. Recommend buying hard-cover version.

Quite helpful

I have used the various editions with my students - physics and engineering majors in a medium-size non-Ph. D. university - for many years. There isn't really enough mathematical analysis for this purpose, and even the current (5th) edition is falling behind some of the technology and could use an update chapter. That's the downside from my specific perspective. I'm sure that many of the book's readers will prefer the lack of equations and their detailed derivations. What I like is the excellent organization and writing, and abundant diagrams that are very well done. The comprehensive coverage is also very helpful, especially for future reference, and the low price means students don't have to sell it used. My experience is that students who learn about this field often get jobs in it, so having a quick reference on almost anything they might encounter is valuable, and the content is more reliable and complete than anything I've found on the web, or in any other non-mathematical book. Also, the options are VERY few. Most of the true undergraduate textbooks (there were lots from around 1998 to 2005 or) on fiber optics are even older (there were lots from around 1998 to 2005 or so), and some are out of print or have exorbitant prices. None of them were ever ideal. A few had numerous content or typesetting errors. In some, the text was good, but there were too few, or poor graphics. There are some strong texts appropriate for graduate students, but if they lack a knowledge of partial differential equations and in particular Bessel functions, students will probably get lost.

I bought this book to learn Delphi. I have no prior experience in it. I am not even 4 pages into the book, and the author is already telling me that he is not going into any details on the basics of Delphi, but instead, is going to focus on enhancements concerning Version 6. He already assumes I am familiar with the Delphi IDE, and if I am not, I can go to his website and get the information I need. I went to his website, and it is more confusing than the book (needless to say, I cant find his "step by step instructions on Delphi IDE). I think this guy needs to jump off of "cloud 9", and step back down into the real world. I want to learn Delphi, not write a thesis on it, or go off on some intellectual space fantasy into the cosmos. I just want to learn Delphi! This book has over 1000 pages, and already assumes you know Delphi!

I bought it for a project I was working on and I must say I'm impress. It has examples for every single scenario and give you the small and big picture of Delphi development.I highly recommended.

. . but, a very good reference work for those that wish do delve deeper, into this wonderful programming environment. Delphi deserves a much wider following than it currently has, IMHO.

I have had other books by Marco Cantu, including "Mastering Delphi 4". His style of writing is gentle, albeit at times a bit repetitive. He certainly has an over all grasp of Delphi and the "ancient history" of Borland leading up to it and demonstrates a close relationship with the company. His coverage of the "Visual Pascal" portion of the Delphi suite is helpful and fairly complete. Overall I rate this book ****.The missing * is based on inadequate (in my opinion) coverage of graphics and printing. However, this might be more the result of Borland's inadequate facilities for these two important (to me, at least) areas of development. It seems that development environments have moved away from non-Web based software, and this trend is reflected in books of this calibre.I did have a problem with the CD that is included with the book. On the CD is an Ebook version of the text. Unfortunately the Ebook wouldn't work on my computer. It turns out that Adobe made some changes to version 8 of Acrobat Reader which causes the Ebook to fail. The only "solution" Sybex offered was to install Acrobat Reader 4.0 from the CD after removing version 8 from the computer. They also told me that version 8 could then be reinstalled. They obviously did not try this, since it doesn't work. A side effect of simply leaving version 4.0 on the computer is that my e-mail client (Mozilla) no longer knows how to handle .PDF attachments. They (Sybex) have a lot of excuses of the form "The book was published in 2001..."

I have little to say other than this book is exceptional. All items are well covered and specific emphasis is placed on the latest changes to the Delphi IDE as well as the latest new features in Delphi 6 (which are superb).The code examples are clear, bug free and pertinent to the topic at hand. The author's style of writing is superb. His tone is set at the right level, being both factual and very readable. The moment the book arrived, I couln't put it down.I was a little annoyed that the section on the Pascal language was relegated to the CD, and I felt the section on SQL was sparse (also in pdf format, and on the CD only). However one could validly argue that this book is geared towards the intermediate + level of programmer, and the reader should already be familiar with these topics.Advanced programmers (a status which I have not yet attained) may be disappointed with topics covered in the client/server sections.5 stars, once again Mr Cantu! Strongly recommended for intermediate programmers.

I've read Mastering Delphi 3 and 6 and while Marco Cantu does a good job of exposing Delphi to beginners, his style is VERY lacking when it comes to advanced techniques. I also feel he is somewhat condescending in his explanation of technical matters and assumes that his reader is a near-complete neophyte (well that could also explain the popularity of his books). Still, the website complementing his books does show an effort to make it useful and attractive to his audience.Fairly experienced programmer will find that his writing style in the Mastering Delphi series hobbles learning as in the effort to sound more 'friendly' by not adopting deeper technical terms he takes two paragraphs to explain something which a couple of sentences should suffice to.

I've been programming in Delphi for the past couple of years, and found that "Mastering" series from Cantu are most complete. The book contains many usefull information about almost anything you may need to develop professional applications in Delphi 4.

Just got this book the other day. Not too much of beginners book if you don't know Pascal. Worthwhile though for Delphi though. I'll learn the Pascal as I go along. There are other books for Pascal as well as the authors own website. Great book so far.

I don't think I've ever written a negative review before, but considering how expensive the Kindle version of this book is, it shouldn't be anything short of perfect.First, a quirk: the Table of Contents is half-functional, half empty. For a book that advocates absolute perfection in how work is presented to agents, I think that it should follow its own advice. Also, that makes it really hard to go back to a specific part of the very long list of agencies, so that you have to scroll through the entire thing each time.But, more importantly, I used the book to find the agents that might be relevant to me, and was quite disappointed to see, on the agency websites, that some of them are no longer there. Had I purchased a 2017 or 2018 Guide, that would make sense. But it doesn't in a 2019 Guide that costs 27.67$.To be clear, this book is an invaluable resource to navigate the world of literary agencies. Just make sure you triple-check agent one on the agency website, because you can't fully rely on the information that's given to you here.

The guide is nicely organized.Since the agents we submit to, have to be of the relevant genre, division into genres is very handy.Some of those new to the query process would find a few guidelines in the beginning of the book.I particularly liked the section dedicated to newly discovered authors and their point of view, alongside that of the agents.Another interesting explanation was about how to pitch on Twitter. Everybody knows social networks are supposed to be good for promotion, but I personally had no clue exactly how to go about it, especially on Twitter.The book saved me a lot of time. When an agency says directly in its listing "accepts most new clients through recommendations from others," it became eventually clear that they wouldn't be making a lot of exceptions, so I could move on.The main disadvantage of the guide is of course that there were very few agencies added since the ones last year.That most agencies double, triple, quadriple in various genres, and so you don't truly get a fresh perspective of a new agency.Some of the other things that the book can be considered comforting for, is of psychological nature, that even us, hard trained veterans need from time to time.How despite the seeming uniformity, agents could actually want different things from one another. Some want you to be personal, some want you to be professional, and everybody would assume that their way is the only obvious way in the world, just like your favorite composition teacher.So make sure to see on the website directly if the requirements or agents are the same. Some requirements even vary from agent to agent within the same agency.I must say, the book inspired me to take things less personally, to do things my way, not perfectly but to my satisfaction, and to keep submitting.I just wouldn't buy it every year, if the information remains essentially the same.Otherwise, worth the money.Hapy hunting, guys.

This product arrived ahead of time and is as described. The cover and a couple pages are slightly bent, but not badly so. For this, I knocked off a star. There seems to be no other damage to the book.As for the book's content, what I've looked through so far seems well organized and to the point. I am very pleased with how comprehensive and thorough the section of agent listings is.I am writing this just after receiving this item and scanning through it. I will edit this post if I come across any issues or find sections in this book that should be improved upon.
