As an autistic adult, I pre-ordered NeuroTribes with great excitement and read it eagerly when it arrived. I think this is an important book that sheds much needed light on the history of autism research, and on the pitfalls of autism parenting culture, and gives some indication of the direction of autistic culture. However, I'm holding back on a fifth star because I felt that he could have gone much further in clarifying that autistic people do come in a great variety of personalities, abilities and disabilities; that the Kanner's vs Asperger's distinction is in fact meaningless; and most importantly that autistic people do not need to achieve great things to be valuable as human beings.

Steve Silberman is a journalist and writer for WIRED magazine who has written many readable stories on medicine and human health. In this book he brings many years of reporting and training to delve upon one of the most prominent health issues of our time – autism.Silberman’s book is rich in both human and scientific detail and shines in three aspects. Firstly, he meticulously traces the history of autism and the lives of the neurologists, psychologists and doctors who chased its elusive identity. He focuses especially on two psychologists, Leo Kanner in the United States and Hans Asperger in Nazi-controlled Vienna who identified the syndrome and pioneered its study through observations on hundreds of cases. Asperger was the first one to identify a variety of signs and symptoms that contribute to what we now call autism spectrum disorder, and his studies were expansive and nuanced. Silberman’s account of both the foibles and the triumphs of these two individuals is fascinating: while Kanner’s fault was in assigning the blame for autism to parents (he coined the phrase "refrigerator mother") and focusing on children, Asperger identified mostly high-functioning autistic savants in his publications for a chilling reason – so that the lower functioning cases could avoid the ghastly fate met by victims of the Nazis’ euthanasia program which aimed at eliminating “mentally feeble” individuals. Both Kenner and Asperger meant well, and in Asperger’s case his withholding of the identities of autistic people literally meant the difference between life and death.And yet as Silberman so adeptly demonstrates, this was one of those cases where the intentions of humane and well-meaning researchers actually caused harm to public perceptions of the syndrome. Kanner and Asperger’s story is an instructive lesson in both the vagaries of scientific discovery and human nature and the sometimes unfortunate intersection of science with politics. The selective reporting of high-functioning patients in case of Asperger and children in case of Kanner led to a massive underreporting of autistic cases and the creation of a guilt complex among parents. It also led to a delay in the recognition of autism as a spectrum of disorders (Autism Spectrum Disorders) rather than a narrowly defined condition. It wasn't until 1981 that English researcher Lorna Wing finally publicized Asperger's wide ranging observations; and it wasn't until 1991 before German researcher Uta Frith finally translated his work.Encouraged by Wing's work, when the diagnostic manual DSM-III-R finally classified autism as a widespread and bonafide syndrome with a textured and wide-ranging spread of symptoms and issues, Kanner and Asperger’s inadvertent underreporting of cases led everyone to believe that there was a sudden ‘epidemic’ of autism, a belief that triggered even more soul-searching and the assignment of cause and effect to all kinds of environmental variables including vaccines. Much of the media with its emphasis on sensationalism and simplistic explanations at the expense of subtlety and complexity did not help matters, although ironically as Silberman tells us, it was a movie - "Rainman" - that brought a lot of public attention to autism. It is in the second half of the book that Silberman sternly clamps down on fraudulent claims of connections between autism and vaccination, including the retracted work published by Andrew Wakefield.Finally, Silberman’s detailed account draws up wonderful and sometimes very moving portraits of families and individuals affected by autism. Also included are capsule portraits of famous people with autism and Asperger's syndrome like Nikola Tesla and Temple Grandin. Silberman makes it clear that such people defy easy classification, and we do them and ourselves a disservice when we stereotype and bin them into discrete categories. He interviews hundreds of people who are stricken by the syndrome and tells us the stories of both adults and children who first struggled to cope with the disease and then found solace in meeting similar people and connecting with support networks. He also profiles families from a remarkably wide cross-section of society – from people living below the poverty line to wealthy California families - who are convinced by unverified connections between the environment and autism. Silberman does not agree with them, but he empathizes with their concerns and tries to understand them. Fortunately the stigma associated with autism spectrum disorders is gradually giving way to a more subtle understanding, but as Silberman indicates there is still a long way to go. As the title puts it, his plea is for a world that appreciates neurodiversity; the fact that even people regarded as psychologically different can have very important and valuable perspectives to offer.If I had some minor gripes with the book, they were with the sometimes long-winded digressions on the lives of autism researchers and patients and the relative lack of discussion of cutting-edge biomedical and neurological research on the topic, including work from genomics and drug discovery. But these are minor gripes. Silberman has painted a rich, empathetic portrait of a devastating, baffling but ultimately comprehensible disorder and its history which we all owe ourselves to appreciate. Because ultimately, as the central message of this book reveals, the cure for autism is in understanding and empathy. The cure lies in human nature itself.

I per-ordered this book a few months ago and last week also ordered the Kindle version. My kindle version was delivered promptly this morning and I've been reading it since. I have a paperback version that is on it's way to be delivered today so I can share a copy with my husband and my doctor. Thus far this book promises to be what I had hoped it would be, another opportunity to understand myself better, and an opportunity to help others understand those of us on the Spectrum. I was diagnosed with Asperger's last year at the age of 53. Finally, after all of these years, I continue to understand that I am not broken, or in need of repair, just simply different. Thank you Mr. Silberman for your dedication to this topic and for writing what promises to be a very helpful book for the Neurodiverse and Neurotypical world.

I teach courses in disability studies at Davidson College, and I found this book amazing on several levels. First, it's just beautifully written, opening with the story of an eighteenth-century scientist and framing his story as an autism narrative. What that does, however, is suggest from the beginning the visionary and different quality of this book: it is about claiming a history for autism, and for autistic people as a community. It situates the history of autism within medical history, but also--and critically--within social history. And there is some critical history to be foregrounded, such as the idea that Hans Asperger's ideas laid an important basis for accepting autism as a kind of neurodiversity--itself an even more important notion when we remember, as Silberman reminds us, that Asperger was doing this against the tide of eugenicist thinking perpetrated by Nazism and used to justify genocide. Silberman's book interweaves stories of autistic people and their familiies throughout history, and empathetically but clearly shows why the emphasis on cure has had such damaging effects. Instead, his work encourages us to understand disability as difference, and autism as a source of creativity and neurodiversity that our modern world would be a different--and lesser--place without. It's important to note that he does not romanticize how difficult things can be for autistic people and caregivers. But as he points out, that has so much more to do with lack of social supports and resources than it does with the actual embodiments of autistic people. The emphasis on cure has cost us so much--what could an emphasis on embracing neurodiversity bring us as a society, instead? This is what we disability studies scholars call "disability gain," and this book invites us to imagine it beautifully. I found it moving, smart, engaging, sensitive, forthright, and a critical work of disability history and justice. It's refreshing to see a work that reminds us that disability is about human variation--not personal "tragedy"--and that cure is not always the ideal, despite our society's emphasis on normalcy.

It is a beautiful, authentic, personal, reflective account by a practitioner that you will want to keep on your shelf and pass along to others who strive to be more in tune with their individual and collective potential.

After reading Bird's Generative Scribing, I decided to attend her recent training in Toronto. Both experiences were so powerful. Somehow she manages to transfer her wisdom into the book, while within the training, the book's wisdom is brought to life with a similar "art" of expression and skill. You do not need to be a graphics expert or even a good doodler to make sense and utility of this process. She rightly suggests this is part of the new social communication skills required in a complex world. I whole-heartedly agree with her. Dive in and experience for yourself...you'll quite literally see and communicate a new world as a result.

This piece of art is pure poetry for (and of) the soul. Kelvy has a way with words and phrases that is just magical. I love every detail about this book, from the sensuous texture of the cover which makes it almost warm to the touch, to the single-word chapter titles, to the bold brushstrokes that remind me of Chinese calligraphy and ink, to the layout and composition which actually make it very easy and natural to approach reading in a non-linear way, to (in the author's words): "jump around at will... Pass over what you don't need today. Find what resonates and dwell there."The way in which Kelvy shares the generative process is simple, yet powerful. There are precious moments of vulnerability and humour. I feel this is a work of empowerment, that should encourage us all to explore scribing with more courage, and a new desire to let our hands and gut guide us. I love the wide margin space that has been expressly designed for note-taking and scribbling: it makes the book much more interactive. I believe something actually happens differently in the way we read and feel the text, as we make our own marks on the page. Meaning becomes more familiar, the process creates new connections of thought and feeling.

I’m in love with this cookbook. First of all, each recipe indicates the season to cook it. No hunting down ingredients that aren’t in season. Second - this cookbook doesn’t insult my cooking intelligence. It actually includes “real” recipes. No avocado toast or flavored popcorn recipes in this cookbook. This is for real cooks who want to cook fresh, delicious food. Third - everything I’ve made has been amazing. I had no idea a broth made from water could be so delicious. I’ve also discovered the pleasure of grinding my own spices in my coffee grinder. The aroma is wonderful. So thank you for producing a cookbook with truly unique recipes and not just a wash rinse repeat of every other cookbook out there.

This is the first cookbook I’ve ever owned, not living in a very large space I’m very thoughtful about the things I buy, and I finally had to break down and get this. It is not a purchase I regret as this will likely be the only cookbook I ever own!(Unless I buy her other one).It is full of different options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desert. Most have very limited ingredients(though not limited in taste) which is amazing for someone who loves to keep as few things as possible.The recipes are so unique, I’ve tried at least three kinds of grains I never even knew existed because of this book. They taste amazing, aren’t too hard to put together-especially not since she’s lays out perfectly what order to do things in and what can sit and cook while you prep other things-, and are so healthy!Have cooked a meal from it every night since I got it, looking forward to the next one!

I'm the long time Golubka's website and Anya's creations follower. Being a vegetarian I cook dishes from her website and 2 books often as well as from my others favorite bloggers websites and have to admit her recipes are more precise. If cooking from the others websites some of the dishes sometimes go wrong, everything that I cooked from this book was great. I can tell she did a hard job polishing her recipes to perfection. I tried the Blueberry buckwheat pancakes, Spring Cabbage rolls, Tomato and eggplant green mung dal, Roasted radish flatbread, almost all her veggie burgers and Apple walnut galettes so far and everything was delicious!!!. Comparing to her firts Vibrant Table book recipes from this book are more simple and easy to make.

I love this cookbook. All the food is excellent.However there is nothing simple about it so don't be deceived by the title. These recipes require time, effort, and sometimes can be expensive to make. Such as the pecan pie. It is creative and a great alternative go to traditional pie but by the time you have acquired all these ingredients (if you don't just have them on hand) you will spend $$$ to make it.The food is 5 stars for sure. The title though really is so deceptive due to time and $ investment to make some of the recipes I just can't give it a 5 star.

I'm the kind of girl who checks out cookbooks from the library to make sure that I like them. I made three recipes within the first few days of borrowing it & loved every one so I knew it was going into my permanent collection. I love that it's designed seasonally, as I can look for the season and find the ingredients at my local farmer's market. The recipes are fresh and vibrant as the name of the book suggests. I've been preparing vegan meals for the last six years and this is the cookbook I have been waiting for, loaded with veggies, light on the soy. Fun, colorful, and unusual meals. Not unusual in that you'll be looking for ingredients all over the place, unusual in that they are finely crafted recipes that smartly utilize seasonal ingredients that bring a different joy to your plate.

This is ridiculously honestly my first review ever but this amazing cook book is worth of giving 10 great reviews with 10 great stars! The language , the photograps , the ideas are so vibrant yet simple to understand and use . I am in love with every recipe and the foundation idea of how to combinate different foods . So far I have cooked forbidden rice pilaf, healing soup , iron skillet pancake and amazing millet porridge that I never had success with but with the help of Simply Vibrant It turned into a restaurant style meal. I am finaly not afraid to play , to improvise with the food. All recipes are clean , nutritios and deliscious . Highly recommned .

If you love colorful, healthy food with a unique twist, then this is for you. I have Anya’s first cookbook, and adore it as well, but this one is more everyday, adaptable, and pantry-friendly. As with her enticing blog, which inspires me to see cooking as an art that touches all senses, her recipes somehow bring comfort and a healthy satisfaction without pretention. I have tried the Marinated Eggplant, the Summer Porridge, and the Cauliflower/Tahini/Black Rice/Grape Pilaf, all of which are unforgettable and delicious. I enjoy reading everything by Anya in hopes to soak up a little bit of her kitchen ingenuity.

This was a great disappointment, and I am sending it back. The pictures don't do justice to this spectular city at all. They are all very close in which is fine for the Bapistery doors, for instance, but the reader gets no - I mean NO - sense of the river and bridges, the vista of the Duomo, etc. The rhymes are worthless - "Donatello...a famous artist and quite a fellow" - I'm sorry to say, providing nothing to inform the young audience. Also, I'm no prude and the "David" is one of my favorite statues in the world, but I'm not sure close ups of this - twice! - in a children's book is really the place to focus. Lastly,to have misspellings of key names is unacceptable - the "Uffize" Gallery and "Da Vince", REALLY? Apologies to the authors - the idea of a children's travel book is great - but this one totally missed the mark.

A refreshingly different picture book with historical and geographical information. The simpler poetry is what keeps this history lesson moving right along and my 3 (yes, three!) year old engaged to the end. I'm thrilled! There are more scrubbed up, formal geography books for kids. I've seen them; I own some. But, the kids I read this geography series to (from Penelpe Dyan) eat it up and ask for more! I have had this experience before with well-know publishers of children's reading material, when it baffles my adult brain what could possibly be so engaging to my kids... whatever that "it" is, this book has it. Dyan was a teacher, and perhaps has the mysteries of the child-brain figured out. Bloopers and all, this book is a keeper!Walk The Renaissance Walk---A Kid's Guide To Florence, Italy

I have a ton of books by this author and my toddler loves them. I grew up on poems like the ones contained in the authors books and I only wish I could write them as well as the author does. My mother used to make up poems for me as a child. These books bring back memory's of the cute poems that my mother made for me on an almost daily basis. I love being able to share them with my toddler.

Short and sweet, these books tell a lot in the pictures. Kids giggle at the silliness of the text. I keep them on hand in my classroom. When I'm teaching about a place in the world covered by one of Dyan's books, I know I'm going to get a great picture to put up on the doc-cam. I am particularly taken with the cover photo of a tapestry. I noticed that the pictures are of things that caught my eye when I was visiting some of these places but the photos are so much better than mine. I like the large pictures and the depth and perspective they give. The book on Florence is one of my personal favorites. Each of the travel books gives a great "snapshot" of wonderful locations in the world. When my students tell me they are going to one of those places or just came back, we pull out the book for that place. The other day, one student was reading about Florence and another called out, "Do you have one on Mexico?" Well, it doesn't look like there's one yet, but I'll be watching for it. These books are a nice addition to my classroom library.

I have taken 11 grandchildren to Italy and any one of them could write a better book on Florence than this one. If there was an editor, s/he napped every few pages right through the typos. The pictures are of generally poor quality and the text can certainly not be called poetry. For instance, how about "The Uffize (sic) Gallery has many statues outside, And Florence is where once Galileo did reside, This is his statue that you can see, Looking as wise as once was he." Flip to the Duomo: "You can see the Duomo on the walk, And you may even stop and gawk. Because this is something that withstood time, Something that is quite sublime." Each of the 17 pages of text has one of these little gems in the middle of lots of white space, and that's what you paid for.I'm perfectly serious when I write that this is possibly the worst example of a book I have ever seen on any subject. Reviews on Amazon are not my habit, but I am a fervent patron and felt it was my duty to steer the rest of the Amazon family away from this useless book.

I agree with the first reviewer. The poetry in this book is utterly strange. The opening line reads, "To get to Florence you can take a train, After you arrive in Venice by plane". HUH???I could have quoted the whole bizarre book but that would have been too painful.

Don't buy this one. I have a bunch of these Raffi books and they're all great: great art, great songs... my son loves them. This one has horrible,bland art, a repetitive song, and it's not even the version of the song that Raffi sings on his albums. Avoid! Spend the same money on his other wonderful books!

I'm in my early 30s and listened to Raffi when I was a child, so I was thrilled to see books with his songs. Although this one gets a little sad (post-partum hormones may have gotten to me while reading it once or twice), it ends happily with all of the ducks back together again! My daughter loves all things music and singing related, but reading (even to infants) is supposed to be so important. These books allow us to do both at the same time!

My child loves this book because of the ducks and rythymn when read/sung. I love this book because it reminds me to cherish my moments with the little one because they will need to go out on their own some day.As for the physical book, it is study and colorful.Recommended to any parent.

I really like Pimsleur. I am on the third one. I own all five, but I haven't finished the third yet. I'm mostly there. However, I like the content. I like the fact that Pimsleur recycles a lot of the vocabulary while teaching a decent amount of vocabulary. Anyway, it's not about learning tons of vocabulary, but rather solidifying what you're learning to make what you learn later easier. You need a good foundation. I try to listen to each lesson 2-3 times in a day and not do more than one lesson. I find myself thinking a lot in French. I studied a lot of French in university, but we didn't get much of an opportunity to communicate. There wasn't much active learning, unfortunately, and we didn't learn a lot of practical French. I know that's changing at a lot of universities these days. My French is rather good, but I am trying to fine-tune my skills. Pimsleur does help me with that. I am going to take the DELF B2 exam soon.

A lovely, small volume of Buddhist thought. The translation and interpretation are clear & helpful. The small size makes it a great jacket pocket companion for time spent in contemplation in the park, at a coffee shop, or on the bus.

One of the best you can have for dhammapada translation. There is written why certain words are choosen for the particular translation.

Incredibly interesting text while studying eastern religions and/or conceptions.

Prior to reading this book, I knew little of Buddhism. Careful study of it helped me to deeply appreciate the religion and the wisdom it holds. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Buddhism!

Glenn remains one of my favorite teachers. Very scholarly and at the same time heartfelt and insightful. Another book to keep as a key resource to be read and re-read.
