THE LOOK BOOK People often just see the picture-perfect hair and faces of celebrities but don’tknow the story behind their famous looks. For instance, Coco Chanel was able tobring the tan into fashion only after the poor had become pale from workingindoors during the industrial revolution. And Iman became the queen offoundation because no one else at the time was making appropriate makeup forwomen with her skin tone. And did you know that film director Roman Polanski’sdecision to chop off Mia Farrow’s locks wound up making a huge feministstatement? Or that Veronica Lake’s famed peek-a-boo curl was a result of a hairaccident that happened while she was shooting a film? Beauty icons and their looks are made famous by a combination of natural beauty, personal drive, and being in the right place at the right time with the rightmakeup artists, film directors, glossy-magazine editors, publicists, and dedicatedfan base. In this book, you’ll meet 50 of the most influential women in beautyhistory, from Marilyn Monroe to Twiggy, and learn about their lives and how theirfamous looks came into being. Even better, you’ll learn how to get their signaturelooks for yourself by following the user-friendly instructions provided by two oftoday’s celebrity hair and makeup pros. Ever wonder how to get your hair asstraight as Naomi Campbell’s? Curious about how to achieve Kate Winslet’s no-makeup makeup? Want to get Kat Von D’s face tattoos—without actually getting atattoo? The Look Book will show you step-by-step. And don’t think you always have to wear the iconic looks exactly as they arepresented here. Many of the icons in this book were beauty innovators themselves, dissatisfied by the techniques and styles that already existed and wanting to createsomething entirely new. So, once you get your technique down, start experimenting.Develop your own special spin on a look, or combine two or three looks together. With a little bit of knowledge of beauty history and the basic tools of the trade, youtoo can create the next big look. And—if the stars align—you may even become abeauty icon in your own right. LIPS When it comes to makeup, lipstick is the easiest, and quickest way to make astatement. User friendly and ready to wear, lipstick allows us to add color to ourfaces with just a few simple strokes. In a matter of seconds, we can take our poutfrom plain to juicy red (Marilyn Monroe, page 22) or sweet and glossy (ChristieBrinkley, page 26). But wearing lip color wasn’t always socially acceptable; in fact, lipstick used to be primarily worn by prostitutes! Celebrities helped to turnthis idea around in the early 1900s, when stars like Sarah Bernhardt, Clara Bow(page 12), and Louise Brooks wore crimson lips on film. Soon, the bad-girl stigma thatsurrounded lipstick was lifted and everyday gals started sporting their owncolorful lips. Today, beauty icons of all kinds make their lips the centerpiece of theirlooks—and you can, too! Jackie Kennedy Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis is known for a life of tremendous variety: Shewas a first lady to President John F. Kennedy, a book editor, a fashion icon, ahistorical preservationist, a wife to a Greek shipping tycoon, and a paparazzimagnet. But despite the number of roles she played throughout her life, one thingstayed consistent—her petal-soft makeup and effortless beauty. Jackie never wore a heavily painted face or bold and trendy colors. Her look simplycomplemented her features and radiated classic American beauty. Whether beingphotographed as first lady, vacationing in Capri, or attending a black-tie gala, Jackiewas never without her brown eyeliner, velvet pink blush, and sheer pink lipstickthat sparkled with a hint of frost. So inspiring was Jackie’s look that makeupcompanies went on to produce Jackie-inspired pink lipsticks, and even entirecosmetic lines, to mimic it. One such line was issued in 2001 by Prescriptives andsold out immediately after its release—even four decades after Jackie was sworn inas first lady, women were still clamoring to look like her.   “You have to be doing something you enjoy. That is a definition of happiness: Complete use of one's faculties along lines leading to excellence in a life affording them scope. It applies to women as well as to men. We can't all reach it, but we can try to reach it to some degree” --Jackie Kennedy Frosted Pink Lips WORKS BEST ONAnyone TOOLS NEEDED•Dry toothbrush•Light pink lip liner•Clear lip gloss•Light shimmery pinklipstick (glitter free) TIME IT TAKES2 minutes HOW TO DO IT•With the dry toothbrush, exfoliate your lips by gently brushing them and removingany dry or chapped skin. •With the lip liner pencil, line your bottom lip. Start at the center of your lip line andfollow your lip line out to the corners. •Line your top lip. Start in the center of your lip and follow the peaks, making themrounded and not pointed. After drawing the peaks, follow your lip line down to thecorners. •Apply the lipstick to the surface area of your lip, staying within the lines you havecreated. •To add an additional dimension of shine, add a touch of clear gloss (just a little toensure you don’t take away the shimmer in the lipstick). When finished, do not rubyour lips together—it will mess up your perfectly drawn line. If you need to touchup your lips later on, simply reapply the lipstick instead of wiping it all away andstarting over. Pro tip To achieve a classic look, pair frosted pink lips with a soft pink blush (see pages 87 and89) and a winged eye (see page 31). Light pink is considered a neutral lip color and goes with anything you wear.  ALSO SEEN ON Gwyneth PaltrowParis HiltonKaty PerryAmy Sedaris ESSENTIAL JACKIE•Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis: In a Class of Her Own(documentary, 1996)•Jackie Style (biography, 2001)•The Jackie Handbook(biography, 2005) EYES Audrey Hepburn Audrey Hepburn is known as one of Hollywood’s all-time great beauties. A delicategirl, Audrey was known for her captivating smile, cropped dark hair and slight, boyish figure—a look that contrasted with that of her curvy blonde contemporarieslike Marilyn Monroe. But even though Audrey’s look was consideredunconventional, that didn’t stop her from winning the hearts of American audiences. Audrey will always be remembered for her portrayal of New York City party girlHolly Golightly in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But it was her first major (andOscar-winning) role in the 1953 film Roman Holiday that established her as a beautyicon. She played the part of a bored, adventure-seeking princess who starts hangingout with a journalist (played by Gregory Peck) in Rome. She famously wore strongbrows and eyeliner that was drawn out and up past the outer corner of her eye inthe shape of a small wing. Women everywhere started to emulate her look, and stilldo. In fact, it’s rare that you hear the term “winged eye” without hearing a mentionof the famed Audrey.  “I never thought I’d land pictures with a face like mine.  “ --Audrey Hupburn WINGED EYES WORKS BEST ONAnyone TOOLS NEEDED•Angled eyeliner brush•Black indelible gel eyeliner•Eyelash curler(optional, see Pro Tip)•Black mascara(optional, see Pro Tip)•DRY TOOTHBRUSH(OPTIONAL, SEE PRO TIP TIME IT TAKES10 minutes HOW TO DO IT•Tilt your head back a bit so that when you are looking in the mirror, it feels like youare looking down on your reflection. (This way, you can see what you are doingwhile applying the liner without having to blink. This also keeps your eyelid smooth;a closed eye becomes too wrinkled to apply liner.) •Lightly sweep the angled eyeliner brush across the surface of the eyeliner gel, beingsure to pick up liner on both sides of the brush. Then, draw a thin to medium linealong your upper lash line, starting in the center of your eyelid and moving out tothe outside corner of your eye. When you reach the corner, pull the line straight outand upward a little past the corner of your eye to create a “wing.” (This will open upyour eye instead of making it droop.) •Take the eyeliner brush (reapply liner gel if needed) to the center of your uppereyelid where you started your line in Step 2. Now, draw a thin line along the upperlash line to the inside corner of your eye to complete the look. PRO TIPBe sure to clean your brush after every use—liquid liner will ruin the brush if it’sleft on to dry. Also, close the liner container completely when you’re done. Any airleak will dry the liner and make it too hard to use. PRO TIPTo accentuate the winged eye look, you can also curl your lashes with a lash curlerand then apply a generous coat of mascara, pulling the outer lashes toward your earwith the mascara wand. To prevent clumping, take a flat, dry toothbrush and brushyour lashes while the mascara is still wet. This book was a fun read--when I finished it, I "loaned" it to my esthetician. I probably won't get it back. What the heck! She's my friend. There are lots of time-honored "tricks-of-the-trade" in here, beyond just good lighting.

I really enjoy looking again and again through this book. I got some interesting tips on putting together a unique look for myself too. The descriptions are good and they tell you what you need to do the look and give instructions/diagrams on how to do it.

Awful, Courtney love was one of the looks basically a waist of time. Check YouTube if you want help with makeup this book is worthless

I am rediscovering the style of women who have influenced me over the years and came across this book. It is awesome! The pictures are perfect and the choices are completely appropriate! I love it!

That backstories behind each look were actually more helpful than the advice.

There are a lot of great styles and tips in here. I mainly got this book for Edie's style and they did a great job explaining it. I recommend it. x

great for the mod years........good make-up tricks for ladies to go back the 1969 fun girl look.......also other distinctive looks......

Well I enjoyed this book. I can tell the photos were slightly photoshopped. (Please show how the makeup looked realistically) I wish they stopped giving the celebrities all the credit. They just helped marketed the look. (Stop glorifying the celebrity). They need to give credit to the makeup artist, makeup company, hairstylist, artist, or agency who were responsible for the particular look. I wish they featured the "Alexis Vogel" look wish made a sensation and the look of the 1990s. All over I enjoyed the book.

#109,552 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

At the very top of the cover a banner declares this “the best survival book in a decade.” The irony of this sailed past me until I finished it and realized that Adrift, which was published in 2002, is vastly superior. That was the first-hand, sensitively wrought narrative of a man surviving 76 days at sea alone in a life raft. This story, as the unimaginative title suggests, is about the longest documented survival of someone adrift at sea. That someone happened to be a wily but illiterate fisherman from Mexico, whose tale is reconstructed retrospectively by a journalist. There is a tangible loss to time and translation. The author tries hard to paint a sympathetic portrait of the survivor, Salvador Alvarenga. But the elephant in the life boat is that he didn’t start his journey alone. Somewhere along the way, his young, inexperienced mate Ezequiel perished.I vividly recall the day in 2014 Alvarenga appeared on television to the world, looking surprisingly well-nourished. It is explained in detail here how he was able to sustain himself, but the obvious spectre of cannibalism is never directly confronted nor convincingly dismissed. In fact, the author goes out of his way to repeatedly stress that Alvarenga would eat anything to survive. Aside from this lingering morbidity, I was disturbed by how respect for the mate’s memory was sacrificed at the expense making Alvarenga seem heroic. He is sometimes portrayed as a cowardly burden for his captain to bear, rather than a terrified, unlucky kid. In a phrase of breathtaking callousness, Alvarenga is said to discover “the benefits of solo travel” after the death of his mate. His story is never fully developed, and will be forever unknown. There are some randomly inserted commentaries by survival experts to pad the story. It ends with Alvarenga motivated by his experience to try to redeem himself for being a deadbeat dad. Despite the reconstruction, this is still an amazing story. But to have some firsthand insight into the soul of a man lost at sea, you can’t beat Adrift.

This is the story of Salvadore Alvarenga who survived 438 days at sea, in which he drifted 6,000 miles over the Pacific Ocean. Overall I rated this book four and a half stars out of five. This was a truly amazing story, it is a one of a kind story. The kind you will only hear once in your lifetime. It is one of those stories that you have trouble believing that it's true. I really liked how this book included relevant information/facts and opinions coming from specialists, in that they backed up as well as enriched Salvadore Alvarenga's remarkable survival at sea. I am in awe of Salvadore, in his humility and his optimism, in how he never gave up. Just close your eyes for a moment, and imagine that you are stranded at sea. What would you do? How would you survive? To find out how Salvadore Alvarenga survived you must read this book for yourself

Absolutely captivating. It is memorizing to be immersed in the story of a man who defies all odds to survive physically, mentally emotionally and spiritually through what must be one of the most enduring stories of survival in history. Witnessing the experience, the will, the mental fortitude, the skill and the transformation left me as a reader appreciating and sympathizing with Alveranga as he moves through this truly unique experience. I encourage any reader with a hint of curiousity about the story to read this book! It was intriguing to understand not only how he did it but how the experience changed him. Truly fascinating.

On November 17, 2012 Salvador Alvarenga and an inexperienced assistant Ezequiel Cordoba set out on a twenty-five-foot fishing boat from a small Mexican village. 438 days (and approximately 6,000 miles) later… Salvador washed up… alone… a “Wild Man”… “ashore on Tile Islet, a small island that is part of the larger atoll. Ebon is the southern tip of the 1,156 islands that make up the Republic of the Marshall Islands and one of the most remote spots on earth.”I remember seeing on TV the news a few days later reporting *ever-so-briefly* the “claim” that Alvarenga was lost at sea for fourteen months. The reports on two different stations were extremely short… and they hinted that this had to be a hoax. The image of the “supposed” historic survivor… with crazy hair and unkempt beard… and what looked like a generous belly… was never brought to my attention again…UNTIL… this UNEQUIVOCALLY… mesmerizing… hypnotic… empathy… inducing book. The author does an unbelievable job… start to finish. Jonathon Franklin first indoctrinates the reader… as to not only what type of individual Alvarenga was throughout his life… which included fleeing El Salvador… in fear of his life… after a brutal bar room brawl… but explains the entire life style of the Mexican village Alvarenga subsequently lived and worked in. There are no punches pulled in describing the day after day of drinking and drugs… followed by day after day of life threatening fishing for among other things sharks. The awful weather conditions that the area was famous for… and as if to prove the reputation was well earned… such a massive storm… is what started this whole fourteen-month odyssey. The impression the author makes on the reader… regarding the rough physical labor imbedded in these fishing trips… even before the small boat is taken out to parts of the ocean so dreaded and desolate… that even astronauts viewing it from space while orbiting the earth… make statements as to its… gloomy… dismal… isolation… is excruciating. As an example… in that tiny boat they carry “2-mile-long line studded with up to seven hundred hooks and hope the tuna, mahimahi, marlin and sharks are biting. Sharks are their preferred catch.” Two men alone bait the hooks… throw out the line… pull in the fish… by hand! After the boat is taken deep out to sea… with the motor non-operational… no paddles… no anchor (which would be worthless anyway)… a phone that no longer is usable… and weather that ranged from pouring storms… to day after day of unbearable heat… that literally bubbled the skin. The men’s faith and knowledge were tested minute to minute. They would run out of drinking water… run out of food… and soon only Salvador would remain. The reader is literally dragged into the hell on earth… that is… the tiny boat Salvador is in… you start feeling his hunger… his thirst… his success at times in catching with his bare hands… turtles… sharks… and then birds. The nauseating repulsion of what he has to eat… when he is “blessed” with the opportunity to… is palpitating. Covering himself with a cooler (ice) box that was meant to store the fish they went out to catch on the original trip… is used to protect him from the merciless sun… and to protect him from the cold at night. It’s claustrophobic to the reader… so imagine what it was to him. What takes this book to an even higher level… are the interspersed *expert* educational verification to facts that any doubter as to the time and space… and physical… AND… emotional… toll and situations… that were actually faced… might bring up. The author takes the offensive… in making sure… that anyone even off-handedly attempting to cast stones as to any of this being a fraud… are shot down… before they can even get any proverbial guns out of their holster. There are quotes from psychologists… biologists… ship captains… even astronauts. The author has truly done his homework. This awe-inspiring book doesn’t end when Salvador makes it to shore… think how you would be mentally and physically if you went not only fourteen months without being able to move twenty-five feet… fearing every moment for your life… starving and dying of thirst… but if you did not have the ability to talk to even one human being for a year? So… it wasn’t only muscles that atrophied so bad… that Salvador could barely walk ten feet… but his personality… and cognitive skills had almost totally deteriorated. The author professionally and humanly covers that also. This book will obviously be made into a movie one day… but with all the reading I’ve done over the years… I have never found a movie as good as a good book. There is no way on the Lord’s green earth… that a movie will be able to capture this entire story the way the author has.

Review

As a teenager growing up, my weekend wasn't complete unless I listened to David Rodigan playing all the tunes I loved and still love today. Nuff respect due―Les FerdinandDavid Rodigan is the outside world's greatest ambassador of Jamaica's musical heritage, whose enthusiasm and keen insight has enlightened and entertained millions internationally over the past four decades. Now, in his revelatory self-titled autobiography, he takes us behind the scenes to sometimes harrowing, more often exhilarating events and encounters, interacting with nearly all of reggae's finest creators, sharing professional insights and guiding us through the music's evolution from ska to grime. Never has a book taken us so skillfully through this ethereal world with such candor, grit and honesty. Essential reading for everyone who calls themselves a fan of Jah Music -―Roger Steffens, Founding Editor, Beat magazine; Founding Chairman, Reggae Grammy CommitteeIn my lifetime, David Rodigan has been one of the most respected broadcasters and DJs in any music genre. He always will be. His passion and energy for the music are unparalleled―Trevor NelsonPeople use the word "legend" too lightly, but when it comes to this man, he's just a don gargan! Beyond legend―GoldieRodigan's insatiable appetite for Reggae in all its guises and permutations has been a gift to Great Britain. Life without Rodigan would be unimaginable. He waged war against the marginalisation of Reggae and fought to infuse radio listeners with his own indefatigable passion. We are forever in his debt―Vanessa FeltzThe book that every reggae fan should read ... it's the story of a genuine, if unlikely, British reggae institution whose love of the music illuminates every page. It's as easily digestible, engaging and informative as the man's radio broadcasts―John Masouri, EchoesThere a very few DJs who have made the sort of contribution to the music industry as David Rodigan. He invited me onto his Capital Radio show in the early 80s and he was as impressive in real life as his persona suggested. Rodigan has had a profound effect on generations of Reggae lovers and has taken the genre to the four corners of the globe. Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs et al sang the music we loved but we needed someone to make the connection between the artist, the music and the people and no one did that better than David Rodigan―Gareth CrooksToday the world has finally gotten to know that Sir David Rodigan is the very best at what he does. Not just playing the music, but loving it with a world of musical knowledge. We love you David, ride on ...―Freddie McGregorWhen I think of Rodigan I immediately think - mum preparing the food, me doing the hoovering with the shake & vac, Rodigan in the background on the radio and me skanking to some riddim. The word legend is banded about far too often these days and often unwarranted, but for this man, it's the perfect way to sum him up. Thanks to YouTube these days you can now see how he went to Jamaica and clashed with various sound systems and coming out victorious 'nuff times. The utmost respect for a true icon, Mr David Rodigan―Rio FerdinandAn enjoyable history of Jamaican music in Britain―Graeme Thomson, Uncut

I hesitated before buying this book. Some of the earlier reviews were lukewarm at best. Nevertheless, I proceeded to buy it and it was money well spent. I have been a fan of David Rodigan for years and have vivid memories of sitting in my living room, recording that famous Sleng Teng clash with Barry G on JBC radio, back in 1985. For anyone with an interest in or any connection to Jamaican music, this is essential reading.

I was so impressed with Rodigan's knowledge of Reggae music. This book was a great history lesson of Jamaica's music and the recording artists. Rodigan's life in Reggae is very entertaining.

Extremely entertaining and informative! Rodders seems like a heck of a guy and I enjoyed very much all the history of reggae that he relates first hand. Fast paced and well written it made waiting at the car repair shop fly by!

If you are a reggae fan or interested in learning more about the music an culture this is a must read.

David Rodigan is my hero and I loved reading about his journey 😊

Not just a biography but a history and the significance of the cross cultural mix and growth of Jamaican music in the UK and Europe. A very enjoyable read indeed.
