"Doctor Livingstone I presume?" is undoubtedly one of the most well known quotes in history. Very few people, however, are familiar with the history underlying the meeting of Dr. David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley. This book details the lives of the two men and the historical background through which they were thrown together. Livingstone, one of the foremost explorers of his day is searching for the source of the Nile River. Through a combination of bad luck, poor planning, disease, weather, natives, etc., Livingstone is virtually stranded on the banks of Lake Tangyanika.Henry Stanley, a newspaper correspondent undertakes a rescue mission at the direction of his publicity hungry publisher. This book details that mission and the international setting under which it took place. The perils of African exploration in the late 19th century cannot be overstated. This book does an excellent job impressing this upon the reader.I found this book very similar in style and experience to Undaunted Courage (which detailed the Voyage of Discovery undertaken by Lewis and Clark) and River of Doubt (dealing with Theodore Roosevelt's exploration of the Amazon basin. If you enjoyed either of these books, you will like this one as well. If you read this book and enjoy it, I highly recommend the other two.

The meeting of Dr David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley in the middle of Africa in 1871 is perhaps one of the most remarkable and dramatic events in history. Like the Miracle of Dunkirk, when a flotilla of civilian boats rescued the British army from Nazi forces early in WWII, the near impossible odds of success and eventual epic victory seem to be pulled from a Tolkien book rather than real history. Thus Martin Dugard’s Into Africa: The Epic Adventures of Stanley and Livingstone, is rightfully a story first and a history second. In Dugard’s story, Stanley is the true protagonist, who will survive Africa to become Livingstone’s successor as the world’s greatest explorer. However, he ends up working counter to the Doctor’s goal of a slavery-free Africa, tragically helping to make the Dark Continent... darker. The book begins at the start of Livingstone’s third and final trek into Africa in 1866. The world renowned, prototypical explorer and paragon of Victorian virtue is desperate to redeem his reputation and finances after his disastrous 1858 Zambezi expedition. He sets out to find the source of the Nile, an elusive mystery since 460 BC when the ancient Greek Herodotus failed to find the source. However, despite setting out with his usual exhilaration, writing in his journal that Africa is “a tonic to the system”, the trials of Africa quickly overwhelm the now older man. His porters desert him, taking irreplaceable supplies. He constantly fights all manner of African diseases, often so weakened by fever and dysentery that his few remaining porters have to carry him.Completely obsessed with finding the source, he relies on the Arab slave traders he despises to continue his quest. Dugard writes that “it was as if he had sold a part of his soul in the name of ambition.” After staying with the slavers for five years, he witnesses the Arabs massacre a village of Africans deep in the center of the continent. Faced with the evil of the slave trade, he leaves for the small village of Ujiji, where, sick and without supplies, he helplessly and hopelessly waits for a “good Samaritan” to rescue him.Livingstone has been gone for nearly four years and is presumed dead by many when the New York Herald’s owner, James Gordon Bennett, seeking an exciting story to distract the public from a gold market scandal, assigns Stanley, his foreign correspondent, the task of finding Livingstone. An unlikely African explorer, Stanley was born in England to a prostitute and the town drunk. Abandoned at the age of five, he was sent to live in a orphanage where he was regularly sexually violated until, at the age of 17, he escaped to America. In the States he fights for both the Confederacy and Union in the Civil War, where he discovers his talent for writing. After an ill-fated adventure in Turkey, he dedicates himself to journalism, eventually joining the staff of the Herald.Ironically, Stanley’s horrific upbringing prepares him well for the brutalities of an African expedition. After months of preparation, facing almost no chance of success, he sets out with a large caravan from Zanzibar. Struggling to lead his recalcitrant men, Stanley resorts to whipping them constantly, at one point writing in his journal “The virtue of a good whip was well tested by me”. Overcoming multiple mutiny attempts, a near fatal case of cerebral malaria, a war with “The African Bonaparte”, crocodile attacks, and worst of all the unforgiving African landscape itself, Stanley finds the strength and confidence he has always lacked. Miraculously, he also finds Livingstone. Upon their meeting he asks the now famous question, “Doctor Livingstone, I presume?”Stanley and Livingstone spend weeks together in Ujiji. Stanly, “basking in the older man’s grace”, writes of the doctor:“I grant that he is not an angel, but he approaches to that being as near as the nature of a living man will allow.”Stanley tries to convince Livingstone to return to England with him but the Doctor refuses. Weeks after one of the most improbable meetings in history, Stanley returns to Zanzibar and Livingstone continues his quest for the source. He dies shortly after, his body destroyed by years of African hardship and disease, in a village almost 600 miles south of the actual source. Stanley takes up Livingstone’s mantle as the world’s greatest explorer, finding the source of the Congo and following the dangerous river all the way to the West coast of the continent.Dugard tells this story with great care and skill. He is himself an adventurer and while researching Into Africa, he followed Stanley’s path across what is today Tanzania, getting thrown into an African prison while doing so. This is, presumably, what helps him understand his explorers’ relationship with the African landscape, leading to wonderful insights such as the following after Stanley’s near miss with a crocodile:“Africa had soothed him and calmed him and made him feel as if he were its master. But it was all a myth. The continent had no equal.”Dugard also enhances his story with an epic style. Like a gifted movie director, he cuts chapters back and forth between Stanley, Livingstone, and the rest of the world, creating dramatic scope and pacing. Little details, for instance starting each Stanley-focused chapter by counting down the “Miles to Livingstone”, gives an intense sense of urgency to his relentless quest. But Dugard never loses the intimacy of his characters. For example, when he describes Stanley “striving desperately to say exactly the right thing” when meeting Livingstone. If Dugard loses anything in his account, it is the different impacts Stanley and Livingstone will have on Africa after their meeting. Livingstone’s fervent abolitionist beliefs and his graphic description of the horrific slave trade, especially the massacre he witnesses, will spur the British Empire to use its superpower status to end the slave trade. Stanley, however, tragically uses his knowledge of the Congo to enforce the brutal Belgian regime of King Leopold II, failing to continue the true legacy of Livingstone. The two explorers serve as contrasting symbols, the best and worst of Western action in Africa.

“Doctor Livingstone, I presume?” These iconic words are culturally embedded in the psyche of Americans (and, I assume, the British as well), but I had only a vague understanding of their meaning before reading Dugard’s account of the two expeditions that would bring the phrase into household immortality—the first of which was Dr. David Livingstone’s search to once-and-for-all find the source of the Nile and the other was Henry Stanley’s search to discover whether Livingstone was still alive. If one isn’t a diehard history buff, it can be hard to maintain one’s interest in events of almost 150 years ago. Let me assure you, this isn’t the case for stories of African explanation—including “Into Africa.” If the author is at all skilled, these books read like novels with an almost improbably high level and pace of tension. That’s because almost everything in Africa in those days was working against the explorer, and most things were actively trying to kill him. A summary of threats include: a panoply of diseases (e.g. malaria, dysentery, etc.), an ark of animals and insects (e.g. poisonous snakes, lions, elephants, rhinos, etc.), and of course tribes and other humans (e.g. one could find oneself caught in the cross-fire between Arab slave traders and tribes who resented being enslaved, even if one had no stake in the fight.) And if none of those killers got one (and at least some of them always did), your men might desert you in the middle of the night while absconding with all your goods—and those goods were how one paid for both one’s food and for safe passage through tribal lands. In Dugard’s work, one sees each of these threats played and replayed, as well as a host of others from political conflicts, incompetence, and disgruntledness. It should be noted that there was almost no precedence for sending someone to look for a lost explorer—it was considered so unlikely to succeed in that era, not to mention likely getting a lot more killed. The book largely alternates chapters featuring Stanley with those featuring Livingstone. This is particularly the case once the book reaches the point at which Stanley is actively on the trail. These were very different men, but the name of each man became synonymous with courage. Stanley was an American journalist who made it to the top based solely on willingness to go places and do things other reporters wouldn’t. In fact, he had trouble making a go of his career starting out, and it wasn’t until a traumatic adventure that he developed the assertiveness to make something of himself. Livingstone was already a legend when he took on this expedition, and was arguably too far past prime to be taking on such an adventure. The men were also quite different as expedition leaders. Stanley ran his caravan with an iron fist, while Livingstone was known for being lax and easily distracted—while they were at opposite end of the spectrum in this regard, it seems likely that both would have succeeded better with more moderation. At the book’s beginning there’s a conflict at the Royal Geographical Society between Richard Burton (the explorer, not the actor) and John Speke over the source of the Nile. Livingston, a living legend, was asked to investigate and settle the issue—an objective he didn’t complete. It should be noted that finding the river’s source isn’t as easy as it sounds. Speke was correct in that the Nile reached at least to Lake Victoria (at the equator), but it wasn’t clear whether Victoria was connected to other lakes in the southern hemisphere, and—if so—how far down it went. There was a chain of lakes to the south that might have drained into the Nile, but, as it happens, flow into the Congo River.I found this to be fascinating reading. The book consists of 40 chapters divided among five parts, and so most of the chapters are quick reads and the interspersal of the Stanley and Livingstone story lines keeps the pacing going nicely. Dugard did a good job structuring the narrative.I’d recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about Stanley, Livingstone or who just want to know what it was like to be an explorer on the Dark Continent. [Fun-fact: While “dark continent” sounds blatantly racist, it turns out that the phrase was originally used in reference to the fact that so much of the map was blank—i.e. it was largely unmapped.]

The podcast is a favorite of my 13 yr old daughter and mine. I love the podcast because it has an air of overarching mystery. Disappointed with this book because it seems to just be about psychotic mass murders. Very little in the sense of wonder or magic that the podcast always weaves in. Plenty of carnage if that’s your thing.

The problem is that the sections start with unrelated topics only to leave you hanging after the sort bit of actual story given.

I loved the podcast, I loved the tv show, and now I love the books. I learned a lot of dark history and can’t get enough. I can hardly wait to read the other books.

Bought the three books of the series. Love it.

And this is Lore....

I love Aaron's work, just wish there was more new material. His stories are greatly told, and are some of my favorite to hear, but I have heard them all on his podcast.

A collection of Aaron Mahnke's best LORE stories. I love his podcast, I love the books have all three of them!

Book arrived in great condition, can't wait to read it

#248,729 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This was a great book. I love history and I love golf so what better way to combine the two? I just returned from Scotland where my daughter was studying abroad at St Andrews. Playing the Old Course is like no other golf in the world. The ghosts of the past surround and walk with you. How could I not become curious about the early founders of the sport? This book does a great job painting a portrait of Tommy Morris and his father, of the times they lived in, of golf at its infancy. It is a fascinating tale, easy to read and well written. I gave it to a friend and still haven't gotten it back. The book begins with the father and then segues into the young Tommy. It takes you through the various tournaments they played and the evolution of early equipment. It ends with their deaths, but did they really die or does their legacy still live in every player who welds a stick.

Although I've played golf for over 50 years, and am familiar with 20th century golf history, I have just started playing "Hickory Golf", using 100 year old hickory shaft clubs, and reproduction golf balls of the 1920s era. We even dress the part, wearing knickers or plus fours, dress shirts, a tie, tweed jacket and cap...Well, you get the idea. This new-found interest led me to the story of modern golf's origins in Scotland, beautifully (and poignantly) detailed in "Tommy's Honor". Author Kevin Cook brought 19th Century Scotland alive with his in-depth research and skill portraying the Morris Family of St. Andrews. It's tough to describe a golf match and keep it interesting; Mr. Cook accomplishes this feat 20 times over!Everything pertinent to golf's formative years is included in "Tommy's Honor": Culture and Class Lines; development of balls and clubs; how world-renowned courses evolved from pastures and pathways to the stunning fairways and greens we're familiar with. Best of all, Old Tom Morris and his oldest son, Tom Morris, Junior are presented not as icons, but as real people, albeit superbly talented and visionary ones!My fellow Hickory Golfers and I are really looking forward to the film adaptation of "Tommy's Honor", which will be released next month (April, 2017). If it's half as compelling as this book, it will be a hit!

If you've seen the movie and decided to skip the book, you're making a big mistake. While the movie gives a nice little story of Old and Young Tom, it barely scratches the surface of all the fascinating information present in the book. Cook has penned an outstanding biography that gives fascinating insights into the man who was certainly golf's greatest innovator, giving a deep feeling of the many challenges Old Tom faced and how he truly created the game we know today. The book was recommended by a caddy during a recent trip to Scotland, and it was especially poignant to read it having just visited many of the places where the Morris family made their mark. If you love golf, you owe it to yourself to read this, even if you normally shun other golf history books. This one is special.

Reading Tommy's Honor while watching the 2015 Open in St. Andrews, Scotland, made each experience extra special. Viewing the layout of the course in 2015 built from the mind and back braking work of Tom Morris and his helpers 150 years ago was an exciting leap in the history of the sport of golf. I hope each of the players had the opportunity to read this book before they hit their first tee shot. Kevin Cook has done a great job of weaving the stats from many tournaments, the history of the R & A, and the culture of the time into the personal story of Old Tom and Tommy, the champion golfer. Learning the Scottish origin of many current golfing terms added to the understanding of the golfing lexicon. Sharing the passion for the game that Tom and Tommy had will keep it alive and well for many years to come, not only for the players but for the "fanatics" as well.I'm not a player, but reading Tommy's Honor has made me a better viewer and fan.

One of those rare biographies that transports the reader to the time and location of the story. I love anything about golf: playing it, watching it on TV, reading about it, talking about it, etc. Following Young Tommy to the courses in England and Scotland seemed almost as if the reader was part of the throngs in the 21st century galleries of modern day events. The tragedies that Old Tom dealt with and the manner in which he dealt with them made the book that much more poignant. At times I felt the book got a bit wordy but I'm very glad I persevered and finished it. Read it if you like golf or are interested in the history of golf or if you just want a feel-good story about family.

I am an avid golfer, an amateur historian and a frequent traveler (usually in conjunction with golf), having been to England, Scotland and Ireland on several occasions. That being the case, you would think this would be right up my alley. And while I can’t say that I disliked it, it was very simple and didn’t actually tell me a lot that I didn’t already know (though I’ve never studied the Morris family). The book tells the story of Old Tom Morris and his son, Young Tom, golfing royalty in the mid-late 19th century. It is largely biographical, but takes enough liberties with undocumented dialogue and personal feelings to almost qualify as historical fiction. There is not enough scholarly background work to produce what could have been a highly educational and informative text, but instead just enough facts against a historical backdrop to produce a very light, entertaining, easy to read, feel good text.

I loved this book! As a long time golf enthusiast it was so interesting reading the story of those early days of golf, as the ancient sport took form and moved to become the game so many of us enjoy today. I always knew about Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris as early winners of the British Open ( as we call it today) but Old Tom's life, family, faith, and commitment to golf was opened beautifully in this book. I've already recommended it to my friends and I'm happy to recommend it here.

I felt excited, touched, and enriched as I read on, and I am sure most readers will have a similar response....Offers a good integration of Eastern spirituality with Western science to make a compelling argument for the values and effectiveness of mindfulness and compassion meditation. Not only is the argument clear and convincing, but the book also offers plenty of practical aids....Should you read this book? This is by far the "closest thing" I have ever come to ("in my emotional life,") which I truly feel is answering my deepest questions for why I have not been able to overcome my "multi-faceted" anxieties. The approach is entirely new to me and comes from a completely different angle (quite the opposite actually) from my self-critical approach. The heart of this book for me personally has much to do with seeing and feeling (and allowing with softness and kind loving awareness) the suffering I "endured" as a young child. The solution Christopher write about has been for me (for us) to love that hurt little boy and to accept that there were causes -- which in my case had to do with my mother (God bless her) who was in many ways unavailable to me physically and emotionally -- and who was quite opinionated and critical of others. I now see my anger clearly in my body (when it is revisited) and how I am now more able to accept it with a self-loving and compassionate attitude. I highly recommend this book as a tool for many people who suffer from childhood trauma whether it be slight or deep.

Mindfulness seems to be the topic of the day but the mix of this idea with the concept of self compassion captivated me. Mr. Germer writes with intelligence and clarity. A secular approach to mindfulness and self compassion that has great appeal to me personally. As an aside, I picked up the book not only for personal reasons, but because I wanted to import the concept of self compassion into my work as a teacher who frequently delves into creative process. By and large, teenage students are reluctant to try anything they can't do without perfection--this in turn gets in the way of self-expression in the arts. I have already begun to transfer some of the ideas I am learning as I read, into my classroom.

This book was amazing. It taught me so much, so many things I could apply in my daily life. Links to exercises that I practice now and that changed my life for the better. I have been more compassionate towards myself hence also towards others. It has been an amazing transformation. The experiences of other people that are shared are touching and I connected strongly to them.

I've learned so much about self-compassion and self-love from this book. It spoke to my pain and fears, and taught me how to love myself more than what I had been doing. Why is it so hard to take care of yourself and love yourself in the same manner that you so easily take care of others? This book helped me look at this differently and changed my perspective on self-kindness. Now it's up to me to put everything into practice and I look forward to doing with the tips and techniques that I learned. I highly recommend this book to anyone needing a heartfelt, educational, and common-sense perspective on self-love and self-compassion!

I won't go into a description of this book, because there are plenty of reviews that do that. What I will say is that as a psychology professor and psychotherapist, I have a few "go-to" books - books that I constantly have to replace because I end up giving them out to students or loaning them to clients. For couples, for example, it's Notarius & Markman's "We Can Work It Out." For people that need to work on mindfulness and learning to relate compassionately with themselves, this excellent book is it. I finally bought it on kindle as well just to have a copy that I could count on being able to get my hands on! Probably my favorite part about this book is the way that it uses mindfulness as a vehicle for the development of self-compassion, such that as readers move through the book, they develop both of these capacities. I can see it not appealing to some - it might be too psychological for those who prefer Thich Nhat Hahn, or not empirical enough for psychology professionals looking for empirically-validated treatment approaches supported by dozens of clinical trials...but for those who want a readable, sensitive path that is rooted in both spirituality and psychology, it is a tremendous resource. Highly recommended.

Having struggled with some very difficult life stresses for a while, they were beginning to get on top of me until a therapist friend recommended this book. For someone already open to meditation, this presents a very simple yet powerful way to cut through the complications of life's big issues and begin to resolve conflicts and get relief. I found this book enabled me to release negative feelings toward people I felt were making life difficult for me and to develop a much more positive relationship with them, leading to reduced stress and more successful interaction. I can't recommend this book strongly enough.

This book has been a powerful resource for someone who is a trauma survivor and has been in desperate need of learning self-compassion. I was already familiar with mindfulness, and this book brings together that eastern practice with self-healing. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it doesn't take into account those of us who are recovering from OCD, which I have used as a coping mechanism for my trauma. So to suggest repeating mantras over and over feels very much like the obsessive thoughts I have been wanting to overcome. It would be helpful if the author provided an alternate way of doing what he calls meta, which didn't require repetitive thoughts. Still, I appreciate the incorporation of numerous scientific studies in the text which clearly demonstrate the power of mindful self-compassion. I have found this book incredibly valuable overall and the step-by-step guide to the meditative practice has made it easy to follow. I have already recommended this book to many friends.

This is one of the best values in piano music! Our son has enjoyed learning with the Faber series, and this collection of pieces has him excited to continue taking piano lessons so that he can learn many of the pieces in this book. It includes a wide variety of styles and composers...good job, Fabers, and thanks for the fantastic price!

GOOD

Intelligent compilation of gorgeous pieces! Many standards, and a few pleasant surprises, included. Very readable, clean edition.

I like the musical selection of this series. Good crisp printing and good layout so easy to turn pages by yourself.

We like this series. This book has quite a few songs I think are boring, but it's much thicker than the others, so there are still plenty of good ones.

Great book! Many challenging songs, and it comes with a CD!

Awonderful and insightful book! I use this with my private piano students to aid them in learning great piano literature and from which musical era the composition came and the CD ...unbelievable!

Great product and quick shipping!! Thank you!
