Sometimes "vocal selections" books tend to gloss over some really neat musical elements in an effort to condense then to a piano format or to make them easier to play. I've found that this arrangement (if it's even an arrangement) is so close to the broadway cast recordings that I can't tell any differences. I appreciate having it all in front of me and allowing me as a player to make choices I need to make to meet my ability or to adapt to a singer I'm accompanying.This book is certainly useful to anyone involved in a production of this show. My experience with the companies that rent out scripts and musical scores is that they usually don't give you very much time unless you want to pay a lot of money. Having this book is very helpful to getting a "head start" on learning the music before the scripts become available. And you can count on the actual libretto and scores being almost identical to the vocal selections.The only downside is that several of the songs are abridged versions and there are 5 or so songs from the original show that are omitted from this book.

Jason Robert Brown has nothing to prove. He spent one year at Eastman to perfect his orchestration skills and then went to New York. Before he had any wrinkles on his face he was working with Harold Prince and Alfred Uhry at Lincoln Center on the biggest, most brilliant musical since "Sweeney Todd." ("Parade", 1999; Tony Award for best score) He is beloved by actors for his small pieces-"Songs For A New World", which he did with Hal Prince's daughter, the esteemed Daisy Prince and then "The Last 5 Years" which played with time the way that ABC's "LOST" does, with two actors a small band and almost no set. His music is honest, brilliant and he himself is one talented performer.13 is a musical that he wrote for and about Middle School kids. It's not stupid or silly; he addresses real issues but in such a way that within two years every middle school theatre program in the Western World will be doing this show. The Broadway production used many characters and many ensemble numbers, which one needs with educational theatre for the young and even the very tight orchestra was filled with thirteen year olds. The muysic is sharp and witty; his lyrics are wise and honest and they easily fit into the musical lines so that no thirteen year old boy is holding a high A on an "e" vowel. The music is difficult and the only accomodations he made were for the Cambiata voice. If Disney were wise, they'd option this and film it well and then Music Theatre International can take it from there.In the meantime, every single person who teaches middle school theatre needs to learn this show because you'll be doing it soon enough.I can't wait to see what Mr. Brown does next.

My son did this show with a local community theater. My son wanted the music book so he could use the songs from this great show for auditions. If you're looking for audition songs for your teen this is great book with songs for both boys and girls!

Not all songs from the musical are in the book... Disappointing!

I got this primarily for two solos for younger voice students. Not as familiar with the rest of the show so will keep working with the book to find other gems.

My only complaint about this book is that it doesn't include more songs. It hits the highlights, but omits some numbers that I really wanted. And a lot of the songs can't be used as solo performances, but that is somewhat to be expected in most cases. But overall, I'm sure I'll get some consistant use out of this book.

This is a fantastic work, and I would give it nine stars if I could. I read is slowly, in small doses over a couple weeks, because it caused me to think so much about social and economic processes that may be so familiar they are not questioned. Any book that causes so much thought and reflection is a treasure.Stoll's is an economic history of Appalachia, but not what many would expect. It offers an analysis that Stoll supports by meticulous research (the extensive notes are often well worth reading) and illustrations of how the processes he observes also worked their way in other times and countries. The analysis will be familiar, at least in part, to those who have studied the history of third world countries and their frustrating struggle for development. Stoll believes we often denigrate Appalachians because we fail to recognize that their current plight is the consequence of corrosive practices over over a hundreds of years by outside speculators and owners of extractive industry. I do not buy all of his analysis (some reviewers fairly say he idealizes the lives of early Appalachians, while his suggested remedial approach, while admittedly formative, strike me as not viable), but I buy much of it. And to the extent his analysis is sound, it has significant implications for how we approach economic and social policy in Appalachia and elsewhere.The reviews of Ramp Hollow are mixed. A majority praise the work, often highly. A few are simply dismissive (rejecting it as "anticapitalist" or "propaganda", though it is far more nuanced and better researched to remotely warrant such criticisms). And some point to shortcomings in the telling, often fairly in my view. Whatever shortcomings exist do not discredit this fine study, and I for one congratulate the author and thank him for being so provocative and insightful.

Having encountered a "ramp festival" during my hike of the Appalachian Trail, I found the title intriguing enough to get this book. I had expected something of a colorful description of Appalachian life and the crises that it faces, sort of like an updated version of Kephart's classic Our Southern Highlanders and some of the book was in that vein, but be aware that a lot of it is devoted to economic theory, especially as it relates to the enclosure of the commons, not only in Appalachia but in England and elsewhere. As a non-specialist, I can't really juge whether the author's reasoning is sound, but it certainly does appear that capitalism has a lot to answer for in the cruel treatment meted out to the residents here.

This is one of the most important books I've read in years, and I read a lot. I am descended from self-sufficient farmers (the mountains of Virginia and the North Carolina Piedmont). They saved themselves by not working for wages. Instead they mostly were builders and worked for themselves. I'm a retired journalist, and I know the Appalachians pretty well. But this book allowed me to put two and two together and connect the history I know with the horrifying history that I didn't know.Pay no attention to the vindictive reviews here by right-wing ideologues who resent the effectiveness of this book's devastating critique of systems of economic exploitation. It's high time we acknowledged what we've done to people.The most future-oriented element of this book is its defense of the commons. The concept of the commons has been almost lost in America. The intelligentsia are starting to rediscover the concept of the commons (for example, see Ken Ilgunas' "This Land Is Our Land: How We Lost the Right to Roam and How to Take It Back," published April 2018. Europeans are, as usual, ahead of Americans in this area. Europeans are not only recovering the concept of the commons. They're actually starting to do something about it, as Ilgunas' book shows.Except for the very rich, we are all hillbillies now. "Ramp Hollow" shows us not only how things got this way, but also how to start doing something about it.

He pulls the Old and New Testaments together in a way that helps to understand that the Bible truly is one book written by one author to reveal the one God of the universe. His insight is outstanding. His explanations are clear, concise, and easily understood. While leading an upcoming study in the book of Daniel, I intend to make John Phillips' "Exploring the Book of Daniel" one of the central "go-to" tools.I have several volumes by John Phillips (including the New Testament set) and I strongly recommend any of his books. You won't go wrong reading this wonderful author's work.

wow. really has a lot of Spiritual food contained in this book

Phillips is a master at digging into theology and still making it relevant and understandable to the lay person. I highly recommend his commentary, and also the one he wrote on the Book of Revelation.

I was confused about how Daniel fit into the history of the time it was placed in the Bible, but even more how it affected New Testament times and then how it affects today's happenings. This commentary is very helpful to a novice Bible student and easy to understand. The book is full of helpful facts about the times of Daniel.
