In Tuscany, by Frances Mayes

Amazon.com Review

Frances Mayes continues her love letter to Italy in this sequel to Under the Tuscan Sun and Bella Tuscany. The restoration of her home, Bramasole, is complete, but Tuscany keeps unfolding. While the earlier books chronicled her and her husband's first years in Italy, this one is less full of stories than meditations on the elements of Tuscan pleasures, accompanied by photographs that give color to the place Mayes has described so lovingly and well. "What makes the people so friendly, no, not just friendly, so genuinely kind and generous?" Mayes asks an Italian friend, then turns her intense attention to answer the question herself. Her answers range from baci (kisses), an intimate expression that "keeps alive the joy we all are born with," to la piazza, the navel of Italy's intense sense of community, to a deep love affair with food and seasonal delights. (Mayes shares the latter and once again gives recipes from the traditional to the idiosyncratic while her poet-husband Edward treats us to a description of the olive harvest). Then there is the Tuscans' territorial attachment to the land. Place, Mayes writes, makes you who you are and it is by reading the landscape that you find the story of how the people lived. Like a guidebook written by a good friend who reveals to you all the secret places they've found, Mayes leads us from out-of-the-way towns to great frescoes to tiny restaurants with exquisite delicacies (and even gives you their addresses). Turn down any one of Mayes's streets and there is something to contemplate. In the distance you see villages crowning a hill or protectively stacked against a slope. Every one pulls me toward its altarpiece, special triptych, arched gate, gothic window, or fountain. Every one has its opinionated, eccentric, friendly, and intrinsic characters who make each place deeply itself. Once again, Mayes presents Tuscany as an irresistible place where the pleasures are unexpected, sumptuous, and downright enviable. Immersing yourself in In Tuscany is the next best thing to being invited home to Bramasole. --Lesley Reed

From Publishers Weekly

Riding on the success of her previous books, Mayes, who here collaborates with her husband, returns with a curious amalgam of cookbook, coffee-table book, travel guide and memoir. As in Under the Tuscan Sun and Bella Tuscany, Mayes lovingly admires her adopted Tuscany, where she purchased a villa 10 years ago. Chapters are loosely organized around general concepts: for instance, "Baci (Kisses)" focuses on Italian effusiveness; "La Piazza" centers on the meeting place of Italian village life; and "La Festa (Celebration)" opens with a quote from a song by Jovanotti (an Italian pop band) and goes on to classify the many types of celebrations held in Italy, from Siena's Palio to weekly Sunday lunches. Mayes includes 25 recipes throughout the book, though concentrated in the chapters "La Cucina" and "Il Campo." While there are local recipes such as Onion Soup in the Arezzo Style and Chicken Liver on Little Crusts, some of her choices are puzzling. Mayes freely appropriates non-Tuscan items such as Capri's famed limoncello and Parmesan cheese and even provides a recipe for the mirepoix that is the base of many Italian dishes. A list of resources provides a calendar of festivals in the region as well as addresses and phone numbers for bars, restaurants and specialty stores. Kirst's (Spirit of the Place) endearing photos of Tuscan life fill the pages. (Oct.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I wanted this book primarily as a coffee table browsing piece and it serves its purpose for that function. I had hoped to pick it up to get lost in it from time to time, reminiscing about our adventures in the rolling hills and magical history but that was somewhat lacking. The photographs are nice enough, although some have a rather distinctive "artsy" flair - and by that I mean unusual subjects, angles or are slightly blurred - so don't quite capture the scenes as I recall and hoped to see come alive again in the pages of a book on Tuscany. I also found the accompanying text to read more like a diary and skimmed most of it. I'm sure it makes a wonderful keepsake to the authors and owners and sure would be tough to match Under the Tuscan Sun, but I applaud their efforts and their love of the country as it's apparent in their publications.

I love Frances Mayes books but the seller did not say in his "blurb" that this book had fallen away from the spine. So within 30 minutes of thumbing thru the pictures my book fell apart. The pictures are all softened somehow, so you can't see a great deal of detail. It's like Frances wants you to see Tuscany and the other locations as if in a dream.........I didn't care for that. But as in all her other books, the information is great, so are the recipes, and I'd buy it again. Just this time not from the same seller.

One of the greatest experiences in my life was my time in Tuscany a few years ago going to cooking school and knocking around Florence (apparently, anyone who was ever important was buried in a Florentine church). This book is certainly true to my memory and it is the perfect amalgam of photographs, descriptive text, and recipes. As usual, Frances Mayes writes only what she knows and has experienced first-hand. Plus, and this is a big plus, she includes loads of pictures of Bramasole, the Tuscan villa she and her husband restored more than 10 years ago. Her descriptions in "Under the Tuscan Sun" and "Bella Tuscany" are loving and thorough, but there's nothing like a picture. The place is truly stunning. But that's just one part of the book. This is an expansive effort that seeks to encompass not only the Mayes' personal stake in Tuscany but also the lives of the Tuscans as defined by their piazzas, festivals, crops, kitchens, and the general beauty of their surrounds. It's an ambitious work of nearly 300 pages done in thick paper with a patterned background velum effect for the text. And the recipes are simple and straightforward. I've been working my way through them and my favorite so far is the Pappa al Pomodoro, the Tomato Bread Soup. But next up is the Zuppa di Cipolle Aretine (Onion Soup in the Arezzo Style) and it looks like a contender. Frances has even included a section at the end that tells where to get the best local produce and goods. Of course, you have to actually BE there. It probably won't do much good to order fennel over the internet.I'd recommend this as a self-indulgent treat, an affordable gift for your favorite lover of Tuscany (or Tuscan lover), or for any occasion that requires a gift of simple beauty.P.S. the Zuppa di Cipolle Aretine was divine!!

The photographic style of Bob Krist does not match the beauty of Frances Mayes writing style. Many of the photographs leave the viewer to see Tuscany through hazy filters where one has to squint to see the details. I was expecting a picture book where I could envision myself there, vicariously traveling through Tuscany. My expectations were not met. In addition, the recipes interspersed throughout the book were a bit of a shock to the senses and seemed to degrade the effort of capturing Tuscany through word and vision. I don't know what the author(s) were attempting to do with this book.

Having read Frances Mayes' first two books about Bramasole, I found myself wishing that I could see all the fascinating places and people she described in such loving detail. It is obvious that she is a poet, for who else would notice the little everyday things that she re-creates so vividly for us? When I heard that her new book would have photographs, it seemed too good to be true. Would the little shrine down the terrace from Bramasole be there? Would the marketplaces in Cortona? Would there be portraits of the people whose character studies have made us wish we could have them for friends and neighbors? Not to worry, all these and so much more is there. The photographer is an artist, and the quality of his work belongs in a gallery. Mrs. Mayes must have known that many of her readers would want to own a book like this, and I feel as though it is my own personal trip to Tuscany to keep forever.

Was hoping for an overview of the Tuscany region. Instead, this is a collection of personal vignettes and a few recipes. Most of the photographs are muted through an ochre filter and do not show true color.

Typical coffee table book.

Fabulous book!

Adrift on a Sea of Blue Light, by Peter Muilenburg

Peter Muilenburg has lived in the Virgin Islands for almost 40 years, building boats and sailing his gaff-rigged ketch throughout the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and along the African coast. Here are his true tales, many previously published in magazines such as Islands, SAIL and Reader's Digest. Peter's passion for the sea, the stars, his family, his boat and the islands themselves is mirrored in his sensuous prose, his ear for dialogue, and his talent for transporting the reader to the place and time of his Caribbean imagination, and to his wondrous insights into island (and everyday) life. * * "DELIGHTFUL . . Many of the 32 stories are full of intriguing encounters . . With his self-deprecating humor and zest for life, Muilenburg's collection is an entertaining read that will make you want to set sail." ISLANDS, 06/05 * "I don't know when I have enjoyed a book of stories more than 'Adrift' . . The tales revealed are warm, human, poignant and hysterically funny . . Very descriptive set of sailing adventures from the Caribbean to Africa and South America for a teacher and his family. Each chapter has a different part of their journeys and introduces us to the main characters and some of the characters who they had met. This is the kind of story that would be great reading on a beach, vacation or just for those times to take your mind off things. I highly recommend this and hope my kids enjoy it too. For adventurers of all ages.

I found Peter's writing wonderful, and enjoyed his sailing stories. My reason for three stars is that more than half the stories center around his dog, saving his dog, his dog's bark, etc. etc.

Real life stories from a man, and his family, who lived the dream on a caribbean island.

"Adrift on a Sea of Blue Light" by Peter Muilenburg.Reviewed by Nancy TerrellI don't know when I have enjoyed a book of stories more than "Adrift on a Sea of Blue Light". Perhaps it is because sailing is also my passion or it may be that taking a good book in hand is just a wonderful way to spend the day - either way this collection of nautical tales recounting the lives of Peter and Dorothy Muilenburg, their sons Diego and Raff, their adorable Schipperke Santos and the love of their lives, their 42' gaff rigged ketch BREATH, is about as good as you can get. The book is rich in lore and love - life of a simpler kind - the way it was when many of us arrived in the Caribbean decades ago. The tales revealed between its covers are warm, human, poignant and hysterically funny. I found myself laughing out loud picturing Santos chasing donkeys out of the Muilenburg's beach house and frolicking with an elephant on the beach in St. Lucia.Ironically, when I first moved to St. John in the mid 80's, from St. Croix, my friends and I took a delightful day charter on BREATH. Peter, Dorothy and I had much in common as we had been Freedom Fighters in Mississippi in the 60's. While I missed being jailed, like Peter was, I was equally incensed by racial injustice. Being also a teacher, like Dorothy, I admired how she had started Pine Peace School in St. John. Here are two people that actually live life, not just exist through it. They both have passion - for the sea and their family and friends. This wonderful reverence for the adventures of just plain being alive shines out on every page of this book.Having lived in the Virgin Islands since 1968, Peter built BREATH, one of the largest boats ever to be constructed on St. John, on the beach at East End. During the past two decades she has become a part of St. John's sailing lore. I see this beauty often; with her tan bark sails, taking charters up the Sir Francis Drake channel in the BVI.Besides chartering, they made two round trip voyages to the Mediterranean and West Africa, as well as numerous voyages between North and South America. Her longest voyage,1989-1991, took them to the Azores, throughout the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, as well as hundreds of miles up the Gambia River in West Africa. In 1995-1996 she went again across the Atlantic, visiting new locations---Galicia, Morocco, Lanzarote and Guinea-Bissau. BREATH has sailed often to Venezuela, Jamaica and all through the Bahamas as well as a voyage of mercy to a Haitian children's hospital during the '94 blockade carrying antibiotics and crutches donated by the VI Rotary. The happenings of these voyages have been turned into delightful narratives in this book, many of them having been first featured in publications like Readers Digest, SAIL, Islands, Americas and American Way. Here are sea stories filled with adventures of another day and time and of characters that became entwined with the Muilenburg family and the sea. The accompanying black and white photos, by photographer Don Brown, lend a dreamy and exquisite aura to the pages. While each chapter can be read separately, the tales are arranged in a sequential order that forms a continuum of a way of life spent adrift - but not without direction - on the sea of life. Whether you are cruising, want to buy a gift for someone special or just want a great read - this is the book for you. Several of the anecdotes are so memorable that I have reread them just to lighten my day. This book is a wonderful way to get away from it all and I cannot praise it enough. Hats off to you, Peter. What a fine life you have enjoyed.

While enjoying a full day sailing aboard Breath as paying customers some years ago, the author/captain/owner/builder of the vessel, his wife Dorothy, and their neighbors, who had come along to enjoy a sail and act as crew, talked about a book that Peter would some day publish. After returning to the relative safety of Northern Virginia, I visited their website from time to time in order to do nothing more than copy the URL so that I could send it to friends and recommend a sail aboard Breath if they intended to visit St. John. On one of these website visits, I noticed that the book "had been realized" and was available. This collection of stories permits the reader to read one, put the book down, and hours, days, or weeks later pick it up again with no loss in continuity. However, I almost dare you to try not to read this from cover to cover. I found each story compelling, intriguing, and well written. In fact, certain phrases caused me to search the internet to determine just why that particular phrase was used. In such searches, it became clear to me that Peter's education--the greater portion of which I am sure is self-taught--was much more extensive than mine. And as for putting the book down, I was moved to tears aboard a crowded Metro car while reading the story about a tinsmith. I thought to myself that I should put the book away for the remainder of my commute that day. But thinking and doing are two different things. I read on into the next story and the tears welled up in my eyes all over again as Peter related the sweeping overboard of their dog Santos on the Gambia River in the midst of circumstances not many of us will ever face. Not every story is a sailing adventure. Some are about stops that Breath had made along the way to certain destinations or the destinations themselves. But this is no travelogue. It is about people, compassion, self-reliance, a love shared between a wonderful couple, and the uncertainty of life itself. I urge you to buy it, read it, and give it as a gift to others.

The first time I picked up Peter's excellent work I flipped open to the middle and began reading about guerillas in Venezuelan mountains, and thought to myself, "This isn't something I want to read about." I laid it back down. Shame on me! I almost missed a real treat. Recently, I was given a copy as a going away present before moving back stateside from the Virgin Islands, and from the time I opened it on the ferry ride from St. Thomas to St. John I scarcely laid it down, save to sleep. I found myself totally mesmerized by Peter's magically descriptive prose that indelibly imprinted on my mind's eye scenes of the excellent adventures he shares here. His unique perspectives on life aboard his homebuilt sailing vessel, Breath, sailing around the Caribbean and beyond, from the miraculous recovery of his boat dog, Santos, after losing him at sea, to raising his sons on a boat had me alternately laughing out loud and then in tears. The lively manner with which he shares his stories, as if talking to a close friend, captivated me, and his anecdotes re-conjured for me the essence of the sea faring life that I have so loved. Thank you, Peter, for sharing your sojurn with us all.
