Of all the books for PowerBuilder I have used this is the greatest! I learned PowerBuilder in depth in less than a week with this book. While I have an extensive programming background, it would not be necessary to make use of this book. Well written and documented. If you are using PB 6.5 there are some minor differences between what is in the book and how your PB will work. The book was written with a prerelease version of PB 6. Hats off to the authors, this is one of the best books I have bought in a long time!

I'm a VB, ASP and Coldfusion programmer. I've read the "Using Powerbuilder 6" and the "Powerbuilder Unleashed" series. The "Powerbuilder Unleashed" is a good reference for the intermediate and the "Using Powerbuilder 6" is worthless!! After purchasing this book I was up and coding, creating a multi-form application in a week. If you're a beginner and want a solid foundation this is the book.

I bought this book in desperation, after having trudged through the awful Using PowerBuilder 6 by Que, and having learned very little. It is an excellent, well designed, and thoughtfully laid out introduction to PowerBuilder that will have you up and coding in no time. I was a little put off by the 'Official' tag, expecting a re-hash of the online help, but this is an outside publication, written by people who know what they are talking about, and more importantly, know how to explain what they know. The book is divided into sections, each building on the previous. The tutorial in Section B is a great introduction to building applications with PowerBuilder. Forget Que's book, this is the introduction for beginners, and it also covers more advanced topics not even mentioned in Using PowerBuilder, like modifying the database .ini files. In summary, a great buy!

This book is a must for those looking for a book on Powerbuilder 6 from people who know how to transfer their knowledge. Unlike many other authors, Erlank and Levin are excellent 'teachers'. Persons new to the subject and object oriented programming, will find the subject matter extremely easy to follow. A highly recommeded text. Money well spent!!

This book was full of gaps in the tutorials. I would be on a complete roll and then be stuck with the worthless index. This book is only good if you have someonewho knows PowerBuilder near buy.

What a wonderful book. I have not written a line of (commercially usable) code in several years and was therefore new to hands-on GUI development. If you are like me: this is the PowerBuilder book for you !!!

I like it, but I have another book by the same author and he repeated information that I had already read in the other book, so it was a bit disappointing in that aspect. I'm sure that if I hadn't already read the other book I would have enjoyed it much more. A "first time" reader to the Scots-Irish immigration information highway would find it very informative.

I'm working on my family history and many of my ancestors are "Scotch Irish". Mr. Hoefling's book isn't very large, but it contains alot of information relevant to anyone of "Scots" and "Scotch-Irish" descent who is curious about where their forefathers (and mothers) came from and why, how they survived (or didn't), and the many ways those earliest pioneers contributed to the discovery, settlement, and building of America.

Nice to have the listing of early families in the area--but mine was not there. Many things were repeats from other works I have researched over the years, but nice to be reminded of them. Easy reading and understanding the content. Good book, but nothing really revealing I had read in the past. , He did well to link the content in an understandable manner. He did good research.

Interesting read on the Scots Irish (others call Scotch Irish). While it doesn't have information on my ancestors, it does give me a better idea of what the communities were like in the colonial period.

This book has some useful background information (I'm a genealogist), but it isn't as in-depth as I'd have liked. The author could have added much more detail as to the "how" and "why" of why the Scots and Scotch Irish came to this country.

Very good book defining the Scotch-Irish, their hardships in Scotland and their hardships, travels and settlements in the colonies. If you are of Scotch-Irish descent this is a must read. This book has many surnames and their importance to the settlements. I am not Scotch-Irish but did enjoy reading this book for the historical information of these people.

I found the information very helpful in understanding life in late 1700s. I was disappointed only when I found my copy did not contain all the appendices referred to in the book. Since my family came from that area I had hoped to perhaps find relatives listed in the appendix.

It doesn’t aspire to be an exhaustive history but it does a good job of showing the reader the general immigration patterns and lifeways of the Scots and Scotch-Irish Folks who came to “the New World” in the 1600s – early 1800s.

I was unable to finish this book. Maybe, if I had a better understanding of the Bible i would be able to follow the plot. Maybe not.It says in the beginning that it is set in Leiden, but not until the 18th chapter does it say that is located in Holland.The quest to find the truth behind the Biblical story is impossibly confusing. The apostle Paul, changes religion, changes back; falsified ethnicity, changes back; betrays allies, repents, betrays again; all within a confusing time line.I was so lost i was unable to follow the main quest. But it did seem the character was able to work out the solutions and evade danger fairly easily.I would like to thank the publisher and NetGally.com for this book for free in return for an honest review.

I should have paid attention when one of the comments was "for fans of Dan Brown". I'm not a fan of Dan Brown. This book is confusing, absurd, laughable, childish and really irritating. Characters jump from place to place based on alleged clues that not even a genius could solve in seconds, like our hero does, even without enough knowledge of what the heck he's doing. Supposedly intelligent, educated scientists believe without any doubt the most disparate and infantile legends ever. The writer gets hold of St. Paul and turns him into a hateful, vile, despicable man swearing vengeance against the world for an accident that deforms his manhood, sending him in a path of destruction of everything he believed sacred before. For a motive to hate God, frankly, it is quite ridicule, but I'm not a man. All in all, a very disagreeable book. And, also, the author's writing is deplorable.

What in the world is going on here? It's Holland, secret tunnels, mysterious folks leaving clues about an alleged plot by Paul to start a religion to hurt Jews due to unrequited love - something like that. Lots of Bible quoting and pausing as if the author (or character) could mystically divine information unknown for millenia.It makes no sense and the Dutch setting is downright absurd. The runaround plot is so disjointed I actually got some paper and a pen to make a flowchart (gave up). Characters were boring and interchangeable / forgettable, dialogue stilted and bookish, action straight from a movie script and the research so bad it's embarrassing.Perhaps the worst offense was the scholarship. He quotes and uses equally Acts and the Letters of Paul. Yet Acts was written decades after Paul died and contradicts Paul's words repeatedly. The Paul who wrote the letters never talks about any miracle (his or Jesus) or visions or going blind. It's like someone citing the Wall Street Journal and the Onion as equal sources. At least Dan Brown's scholarship was spot on. My Grade - D

Exceedingly dense, presumes a great deal of prior knowledge of masonry, new testament and multiple ancient religious sects. It's interesting, but way too hard to read casually. Just couldn't get it going. Finished and wondered why I persevered.

It's not that I really didn't like the book, but I sure didn't love it. I thought by the name I was in for a real treat as I love this type of book with a catchy name and cover. I did not love this book.But,that being said, it did reach me in a timely manner and I always love that.

The story is set in modern Leiden, with excellent detail of the old buildings and history. The revelations of the mystical underpinnings of a secret sect is made, bit by bit, through very densely researched biblical analysis. Slow going at times, but worth the effort.

So much thought provoking information spills out while following clues to this storyline. One cannot help but become familiar with an interesting city. Even the credits are as interesting as the story.

I always enjoy Understanding historical events. I gained a better knowledge of ancient religious beliefs. I am beginning to think all civilizations were given the same teachings by God, but then those beliefs were changed over time due to political or other influences until they reached the current recorded versions

This detailed yet eminently readable book is a wonderful introduction to Kalachakra practice. I'm very impressed with the authors' ability to express mind-expanding concepts from the Kalachakra tradition in clear, easily comprehensible English.This book also contains a fascinating, detailed overview of Jonang history in Tibet. The Jonangpas are the one major Tibetan Buddhist tradition least well known in the West and, to my tastes at least, the most interesting. Their emphasis on understanding reality in light of advanced spiritual practice rather than on intensive scholarship makes their views particularly compelling.My one wish was that the author had added an additional chapter explaining the Jonang Zhentong view in more depth. The focus here, however, is on Kalachakra, and this material is both illuminating and incredibly inspiring.

This book is an exploration of the key figures in Shambhala's history and the Jonang Kalachakra lineage. I would think any Kalachakra practitioner would really enjoy the first part of the book, especially the history of the Kings of Shambhala. The remainder of the book is an exploration of the key figures involved with the Jonang lineage and spread of the Shentong view of Emptiness. It is shocking how few people (myself included) were unaware of the Jonang tradition, especially considering they played such a key role in Kalachakra's history in Tibet. Even if someone is not connected to the Jonang tradition, it is still interesting to read about the history. Khentrul Rinpoche weaves in masters from other schools of Buddhism into the story with great respect.There are a lot of Tibetan names involved, and the book is a tad difficult to get through at times because of that, but it is necessary as a record and part of this history. This book is a gift to all who practice Kalachakra, Jonang line or not... and invaluable for anyone practicing in the Jonang tradition, or someone who is interested in the history of the history of Tibetan Buddhism. The Rangtong-Shentong are really only discussed through the figures who propagated their views, not an exploration of the views themselves, which makes sense considering that is not the focus of this book.I plan on keeping this book and look forward to rereading it -- especially my favorite parts: the descriptoin of Shambhala and it's kings. There is no doubt Khentrul Rinpoche derives great joy from spreading the Kalachakra teachings, and that he is one of today's great teachers of Kalachakra.
