Nobody has reviewed this on the infamous Amazon? Okay, I will.This book is very good. It has one, very important problem with it, but it's understandable in the context of the author's background and focus, and his work would have been better off leaving it out.Morgan did an admirable thing: put classified ads in devotional publications soliciting responses from believers about their personal feelings about imagery in their religions. Not a questionnaire, none of that: personal letters. I would LOVE to read some of these responses in detail. That should be a book as of itself! He quotes some, and they are compelling and affecting. Many of them are from women, telling in itself. He examines 'popular' religious imagery as used as sort-of decoration, like pictures usually do, but he points out these images serve a devotional purpose other 'secular' images don't (or he doesn't examine their role as adjuncts to other imagery in the residence of structure... an idea that he misses, but is understandable...).This book is exemplary in describing HOW people use imagery in personal and public spaces. He examines, as best he can, but, I have to say, much of it reads like the old story of The Blind Men and The Elephant: he can grasp part of a reality, but can't quite figure out the whole of it.Basically, this book examines the emotional meaning of religious imagery to individuals within the Protestant denominations. For that, it is amazing. This is a very important book.Catholic stuff, he's a bit unclear about, he clearly doesn't understand it much.And, with the final criticism, and it's a big criticism, Morgan knows and understands absolutely nothing about Orthodox Ikons and imagery. He is totally ignorant and his mentions of imagery in Orthodoxy are so uninformed... they should probably be removed from any future editions. I'm quite serious: the brief mentions of imagery in Orthodoxy conflate their use with Catholicism. OUCH!Dumb, dumb, dumb.The Protestant stuff, though, is really good. Really good! Best I've ever seen or read or even heard about.Top-notch stuff, that part, which is the majority of the book.He bases a lot of his stuff on the (in)famous portraits of Jesus by Sallman and their effect on (is this a term?) 'religious popular culture', and traces back their evolution (can Xtian 'art' evolve?) from widespread 'chalk-talks' from the early years of the 1900s. This guy digs deep into the religious popular culture, and does it VERY well.Basically, if you have any interest in popular culture in the West and how it is spread, this book cannot be beat. Morgan seems like an interesting guy; I'd like to sit down and have a few shot-and-a-beer with him sometime.
