This book is about a journey to success. It can serve as inspiration for young people who are growing up in difficult situations (neighborhood, single parent family, inferior schools, lack of monetary resources, etc.). Their stories can also serve as a guide for individuals and communities who want to help the students who are growing up around them. This is a book with a message, a message full of examples that show how even smart young people can get caught up in undesirable situations that endanger their futures by following poor behaviors that are practiced by their neighborhood friends or their own relatives (drugs, gangs, violence, stealing, e.g.). Readers are also shown how they can help change the outcomes for endangered adolescents by patterning some of the behaviors that were utilized to help lift three young men from the perils that exist in disadvantaged homes, neighborhoods and schools. The authors did not hide their mistakes when they told their stories. We CAN change things if we really have a passion to do so. That is one of the valuable lessons to be learned from The Pact.

I teach high school and college, and my students range from AP high achievers through students who are reading far below grade level and are struggling every day, both personally and academically. Most of my college students are in basic skills classes. This book held their attention, and ties in well to our exploration of the elements that contribute to success (mindset; having a supportive group of people who are interested and commited to one's success; being able to overcome obstacles by keeping one's goal in mind; never accepting an individual failure as a definition of oneself; ETC). This book is appropriate for a wide range of ages and achievement levels, and nothing works for my students so well as positive, real-life examples. I also used the audible.com version, so that I could listen to the book being read by the authors, something I highly recommend. My struggling readers were able to relate to the personal stories of these fine men as told in their own voices---as if they were sitting face-to-face. I put this book in the same category of high interest and satisfying reading as one of my other favorites, The Color of Water by James McBride, and I intend to use it in my college class that begins in a week or so. Not just a "feel good" book, this one provides practical details about how these men succeeded. Definitely add this one to your list!

I never really understood the true pain and struggles of becoming a doctor until I read The Pact, which was written by Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt. For me, I only realized how hard it would be to become a doctor because of the exams I would have to take if I ever plan on attending medical school. However, for Davis, Jenkins, and Hunt, they persevered through and accomplished a difficult. Their determination and belief in one another made them who they are today. When George was 11, making a quick trip to the dentist office to fix his crooked teeth, he didn't know what was going to happen. From the dentist tools to the names and numbers of teeth, he became more excited and curios about the dentistry world. When George said, "I don't remember the dentist's name, but I never forgot what he did for me. He gave me a dream. And there was no greater gift for a smart kid growing up in a place where dreams were snatched away all the time" (Davis, et al. 6), it really opened my eyes about how a complete stranger can inspire someone. Inspiration can definitely be found anywhere. These three men are so brave and intellectual for going after their dreams. Carla Dickson, one of the counselors for the pre-medical/dentist program, advised Rameck,"Your future is going to be brighter than bright. You just don't see it now. Because of this program, you're going to be able to make it through college with no problems. I know it's hard, but realize that you have an opportunity to make a difference in your lives" (Davis, et al. 119). This line was one of my favorites because Dickson explains how college is just the beginning of adulthood. Whatever the person does in life, it is their responsibility to make the best of it because whatever happens will affect them and possibly others around them as well. There is not much to dislike about this book except the lovesick portion. I did not really like that part because I felt it was not really necessary to talk about love in a pact between friendship. Because of love, Rameck almost destroyed his pact with Sampson and George. However, it did not. His heart was broken, but his mind was focused for medical school. Overall, this book taught me about how all struggles can be overcome and nobody is alone. Friends, family, teachers, workers, and more can serve as role models. It is always better to work somebody by your side than alone.

This book is way overpriced for its content and quality of editing. I do not think it was edited because it has a lot of missing words, typos, and the like. If you are new to AP or wanting to expand your knowledge about past practices, this is a decent place to start.

This is probably the best (and only?) book available that gives a detailed overview of A/P procedures. It is especially helpful for those who need to design new policies to address difficult problems. For example, the book gives a very good explanation of procurement cards (p-cards), how to reduce T&E costs, and how to choose and hire new A/P personnel. In other words, it covers just about all of the bases. The only area the book doesn't cover is specific software packages, but I think that is beyond the scope of the book's title, and there are many other resources that have information accounting software. Potential buyers should note that there are annual supplements that update this book, and it may be worthwhile taking a look at them as well. Technology causes so many changes, that some business ideas are out of date within a few months, so you might want to make sure you have the most current information.

Excellent book

Gives a solid summary of most important parts of running AP operations. The case studies make the book very clear. For new controllers this would be a really good addition to your bookshelf.

This is the story of a lifelong friendship between two strong women - and, despite a dangerous war that intervenes - is strengthened. There is almost nothing either will do to protect their families and each other - even though one, Eliza, is in the US most of the time and the other, Sofya, is in war-torn Russia. The era is pre- World War I.A well-researched historical novel which gives a clear account of life in Russia under the Tsar for those affiliated or related to him - and how their lives change when all that has kept them safe has been destroyed. Through it all, Sofya, is determined to first, keep her family intact - and second, somehow to reach her friend, Eliza. At the same time, Eliza is making plans to leave her family in safe hands and find her friend. It was not easy to put this book down for any length of time. It accounted for some very late nights! The novel is beautifully written, and although we move back and forth between Eliza, her family, and Sofya and hers, we are able to maintain the threads that connect it all.Highly recommended. I haven’t read The Lilac Girls, which inspired this prequel - but I have it on order!

This is a well-researched and well-written novel that alternates among three women during the time of the Russian Revolution. Two of the characters, Sofya, an aristocrat, and Varinka, a peasant with connections to the Red Army, while at first friendly, became enmeshed in an emotional intrigue, that kept me engaged throughout the book. While it is clear that the Tsar and others were ruthless in their treatment of the common people, concerned about only their own luxuries and comforts, it is also clear that the revolutionaries were just as ruthless, killing violently and taking whatever they pleased as though they were entitled. I could not help but wonder why so many innocent blood was shed. The action in this book keeps it moving with lots of suspense, the only respite being the passages that take place in America, centering on the third main character, Eliza Ferriday, who works to send aid to the white Russians and find her friend Sofya and her son. I highly recommend this to readers of historical fiction.

“Lost Roses”, a sort of “prequel” to the bestseller, “Lilac Girls”, by Martha Hall Kelly, is a story of three women during the First World War, (specifically the Russian Revolution) set in Russia, America, and Paris. There are three alternating first-person points of view; Eliza, an American heiress, her best friend Sofya, a relation to the Tsar, and Varinka, a Russian peasant girl who has taken something precious from Sofya. I wish these character’s narratives were more easily distinguishable.The story moves in fits and starts; sometimes enfolding slowly and sometimes jumping ahead as much as a year. Basically it deals with how these three women are related, their war time experiences, and how they will be ultimately reunited. I’m guessing that if you loved “Lilac Girls”, you’ll love this as well. A third novel in the series is in work.Nit: Cover Art: I was confused by the anachronistic clothes worn by the two female figures on the cover. They are not dressed in the styles of the WWI era, which is when the majority of the novel takes place. We are admonished not to judge a book by its cover, but why be misleading?I highly recommend “The Winter Soldier”, by Daniel Mason, for a wonderfully rich and suspenseful novel about WWI.

If you are a fan of historical fiction, you will like “Lost Roses” by Martha Hall Kelly. The setting is around the turn of the century just prior to World War I. The novel is placed in a number of locations, most notably New York, Paris, and Russia.This is a slow starter, so be prepared to give the novel some time to develop. However, once the plot gets your attention, you will want to stay with it right to the end.

This is the story of three women whose lives intersect in 1914 to 1940 in New York, Paris, and Russia. . Eliza and Varinka start on the opposite sides in Russia, a cousin to the Tzar and a barely surviving pheasant. They do things they might never imagine surviving the horrors of the time. While Sofya in New York suffers in a different way from loss and exclusion. She does what she can from afar to help her friend Eliza and all who are suffering.This is excellent historical fiction. It finds the right balance of story, fact, and education. The author’s note at the end describing what was real made everything come alive more.It didn’t become a page turner till about 2/3 of the way through. Maybe because I haven’t read The Lilac Girls and it took longer than I would have liked to understand the relationships. The prologue and epilogue were written in Luba’s voice, Sofya’s younger sister, everything else was written from one of the women’s point of view.

I loved "Lilac Girls" so much. I was actually nervous about reading this one because I expected to be disappointed. It can't be easy to follow up one well-received and beloved novel with a second, right? Well, I was 100% the opposite of disappointed. I started reading it at 10 p.m. and was still going strong at 2 a.m. I found it captivating from the first page. I was so sad to get to the end. The characters are incredibly compelling and even though some pretty unbelievable things happen, it all just works. Among my favorite novel settings is Russia during the time of Tsar Nicholas, so this book was incredibly fulfilling.I am also 100% convinced that this can be a standalone novel. I believe it could be read before or after Lilac Girls. This author does an amazing job at making subtle connections between her first book and this one. Again, it just works.I am excited that her next book will be set during the Civil War - same family of course. That's just absolutely perfect.

Because of all the positive reviews I had high hopes for this book but now, about halfway through it, I think this is an entrepreneurial side gig of some undergraduate IT student for whom English is not the first language. The format of the book suggests that it is self published if not "homemade". It is riddled with spelling errors, grammatical mistakes and odd phrasings. To get a little taste of how the book sounds one could read through those 4 and 5 star reviews. Some of them sound alarmingly similar in style.For quite a while I gave this book the benefit of the doubt, but when the instructional part started I had enough. I'm no stranger to scientific literature, having studied Math in college, but I have to say that the idea that a beginner could make sense out of this text is beyond my imagination.Returning it is the only sensible way to proceed.I hope this review helps somebody to avoid frustration, disappointment and wasting time.P.S.: Got only 50% of my money back even though the book was returned in within 30 days and was in excellent condition. Interesting experience dealing directly with amazon. I'm taking note ....

It is priceless.

I'm so glad that more of St. Ignatius' works are being translated into English. This book is outstanding. He is of course and bishop and a monastic, but virtually all of his counsel translates directly for laymen and women. Very readable. Lot's of usable advice.

There are almost no other contemporary works superior to this one with regards to Orthodox spiritual writings that are entirely applicable to the laity. All of St Theophan's writings are also in this category. I would recommend this book to all Orthodox Christians. This is a must-have type of book.

I found spiritual lessons that can have strong implications in my life. I plan to read and reread this valuable book many times as the ideas and spiritual principles offered are worth integrating into one's life. I highly recommend this book to all who are serious in progressing in the Christian life.

Although this book has a ton of information, it still feels limited in the subjects within the world of knives, and quite frankly, while I understand the economics of it with such a large volume of page content, I just can't stand the black and white pictures and illustrations. But in general, this book has value and contains detailed information that is certainly useful.

Like with most referance guide books,There is seldom everything that you are looking for.It's always not enough pictures or they didn't include the knife I really bought this knife for.Of course a book like that would be everything would be to large to use,or mail.I did wish it had a larger section on Ka-bar fixed blades,or Wester W49 Bowies.I guess this book was adiquit for what I needed,I will just added to the collection of Guides I already have and it will proably come in useful in the future.
