Our chatter about love and match-making is full of cliches that attempt to capture the challenge of people from two different worlds coming together. This is a story about such a match, told by someone who is both fully in the midst of it and a keen observer of it at the same time. It's appropriate to me that Zachary called it "Married to Africa," instead of "Married to Chizo"--because even though it's an intensely personal story, there's rich context about Africa and Chizo's African-ness, which give the book more color and substance than a "mere" love story. It's a vicarious journey into a terrifying, beautiful,compelling place, a place in space and time and a place in the heart, told with intensity, honesty and a sense of wonder. For those who may follow Zachary's other, more scholarly writing about Africa, and his excellent blog, [...], this is an interesting complement, and reveals some of what drives him to approach Africa with both his eyes and his heart fully open.

Married to Africa: A Love StoryReview by Richard L. Weaver II, Ph.D.In a warm, personal, self-disclosing, and endearing writing style, Zachary's story is endearing. Here is how he describes Chizo the first time he sees her not wearing her zoo uniform: "I'm sipping a large Star beer when I see her come down the steps from my room inside the hotel. She wears a backless skintight top, cut low on her chest, and a short black skirt, revealing her thighs, which now seem sexy rather than simply powerful. She wears black vinyl boots with spiky heels, making her seem much taller. I put the beer down and stare at her as she comes toward me. I've never seen her before in anything but her zoo clothes. Now I see what's hidden underneath those clothes....I like what I see" (p. 69). This is a true love story, but it is far more than that. I thought M. Allison's description, in her review of his book at Amazon.com, explains well and accurately, exactly what you will get in Zachary's book: "there's rich context about Africa and Chizo's African-ness, which give the book more color and substance than a "mere" love story. It's a vicarious journey into a terrifying, beautiful, compelling place, a place in space and time and a place in the heart, told with intensity, honesty and a sense of wonder." I found the story compelling, the cultural insights and differences he describes intriguing, and the way he approaches Africa incredibly endearing. If you like love stories, you will love this book.

G. Pascal Zachary fell in love with Africa and I in turn, fell in love with how this book described the adventures he and his wife Chizo shared. Everything in this book is a vivid portrayal from the streets they walked, food eaten, clothes worn, beaches, and fearful adventures. The author is gifted in bringing us right into the center of the action as if we were there with them. As a resident of Berkeley, CA. where Zachary lives, I can only hope to meet him some day so I can hear more about their experiences. Hopefully, I'll meet them at Ashkenaz where we are all dancing to African music. His depiction of them is so vivid I would easily recognize them.. This unique little book came to me lovingly wrapped in orange tissue paper with a Yogaso Logo sticker and a personally written "Thank you!" from the seller. Love Frida, and will try to pass her story along to my grand daughter. Love this series of informative books with a bit of bio thrown in to make it interesting for children and adults alike. Kudos Yogaso!

I love the idea of starting a new language as early as possible, and being in San Diego - learning spanish is a must! This little book is not only sturdy and well made, but the designs and content are seriously adorable. It's simple enough that a child would easily learn from it, but also detailed enough to be a good lesson in language. Plus - it's a cartoon Frida, I mean come on!!!

I bought this as a gift for a two year old. Each page features a number and objects to count (such as "dos flores/two flowers"). The pages are bold, colorful, and exciting. This is a great way to introduce little ones to Frida, art, and another culture/language!

So cute! I loved it! My son does too!

Buy it! I adore this woman and this is a great introduction to her. The pictures are precious and it spells out her life in small ways.I gave it to my niece who I hope can one day embody the fearlessness and independence of the woman we call FRIDA!!!

My 14mo boy likes it. The quality of paper and print are really nice, I would say better than average for board books. I get to teach them the numbers in either language, count with him and talk to him about other cultural things like the Casa Azul, etc. He pays a lot of attention because the graphics and the colors are very attractive. I also have the Cantinflas one from the same publisher and they're both very nice.

This book is so cute! I love the art style, and what a great way to bring Frida into a very little one's world!

Our 11 month old loves these books. We bought 3 for Christmas and she flips through them daily. The drawings are great and the contrasting colors are beautiful. Simple words in Spanish and English. I think it’s a great introduction to vocabulary in two languages!

This book has some really great projects. So far I've only built two, and they came out great.However, I have to disagree with some of the other reviews here. The instructions are quite good, but far from what should be called "very detailed". If you have absolutely no experience with projects like these, you could be a bit frustrated at times. For example, the projects tell you what boards you must buy, but not how you should cut them for the various pieces. Of course, with a little math you can figure that out. Also, details about where to put nails or screws are not included. Again, you can figure that out. But an absolute novice might find the lack of such details frustrating if they expect the project instructions to read like IKEA manuals!

I like the variety of projects in this book from beginner to more advanced. I won't build them all, but I have some on my "to do" list already. Photos and diagrams are good.

The book has very detailed plans. It is a great book for the beginner woodcraftsmen and even someone that hasn't worked with wood before. This book is that detailed. I can see my family making a lot of these projects in this book multiple times.

I sent this book to my daughter, who is in her second year of gardening, canning and preserving. She loves the book and says it has useful info and things she plans to try.

I paid a minimal price for this book and it has some interesting projects. I don't know if I'd pay for a new one.

This book is great for a b & b we are starting up on a farm in western Wisconsin.We needed this type of book.

The book is great just the price a little bit too much for this small paperback book. I like that each page has a picture and Russian letter with the word describing the object in English and Russian. The book was in great condition and came on time .

Clear, vibrant and large print. I love it and hope that my granddaughter will enjoy and learn the language as she develop language (verbal) skills.

Nice introductory book. Has phonetic pronunciation written in English which is very helpful to learn to speak Russian.

I was expecting something different, and I think that changed my reading a bit.Honestly, I thought this was going to be a more traditional poetry offering, and after enjoying Burnham's standup, I was curious to see what he would do with a poetic form.So I was a bit surprised when this turned out to be the equivalent of an adult-style Shel Silverstein book. That's not a bad thing, either, as both Burnham and Bone capture the whimsy, darkness, and poignancy of Silverstein amazingly well.Burnham, too, has some excellent "serious" work here, and it's rather fantastic. His humor is, mostly, spot on as well, full of deprecation, criticism on his generation, and nonsense. Basically, it's what you SHOULD expect from a Burnham book, but I seemed to have an odd idea of what it was going to be.In the end, it's loads of fun, and I think that's exactly what he was trying to do.

I never write reviews for products, so this is a first but I felt some weird sort of obligation to do this. I've been admiring Bo Burnham's work for a few months now, so I'm not a super dedicated, long term fan by any means. I found a few of his standup videos a couple months ago and was so impressed by the depth of his comedy and even more so by the fact that he's in his early 20s. I find that people give him grief for being young and for coming from the internet but if you actually listen to his comedy, you can tell that it's very well thought out and that he's a very smart person, well beyond his years. So I bought the book, expecting it to be hilarious and well thought out, and thats exactly what it is. What impresses me the most is the variation that exists between the poems, not all of them are going to make you laugh. Some of them are pretty deep, and deal with serious issues and what I love is that he doesn't try to make you laugh every second you are reading it. He reaches this amazing level of introspection that is so palpable and relatable (at least for me) that blows my mind. That being said, you will laugh when you read this book. There are plenty of poems that had me doubled over in intense laughter. Bo's very talented and very dedicated, and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next, whatever it is I trust it will be spectacular. So basically, buy the book (it's good).

this is a great book! i love bo burnham. when this arrived, however, the front cover was slightly bent and torn a bit in two places, on the bottom left and bottom right edges. there also was black streaks from shipping all over the book. i bought this for my brother for christmas and am disappointed it doesn't look new.

Now I could be a little biased because I do love Bo's work, but this book is absolutely amazing. The illustrations and poems are, and I can't stress this enough, hilarious. I've had a great time reading it and having friends read it. This book is just a fun time, I've let so many people borrow it and they've loved it as well. Great read, 5 Stars.

His writing is very introspective. He really put some time into this book and it shows. Well worth the purchase.

Some poems are very funny, some very sad and pitiful, and some are very, very dirty and sick minded. Lots of swear words. This author has obviously felt some terrible heartbreak, but that isn't surprising reading the way he talks about women and sex. I like the book though.

Really intriguing book. If you know Bo's comedy style this book portrays it pretty well. It makes you laugh, cry, and think. I finished it in one sitting because I felt like I had to. Some parts I liked and some I didn't; some parts I had to stop and reread what I just read and some parts I had a huge grin and I feel like everyone will have a different experience with the book. The illustrations were fun too and made me wonder how some fit with what.

Some fun counter-jokes(?) and material that questions what is normally written, thought, or talked about is poked fun at pretty well I would argue.Granted; a fair bit of it just flew over my head, but I found more than a fair share of prices in here I thought enjoyed.Granted; bought this largely as a way to support bo in general, but nonetheless.

I saw the movie, and was instantly uplifted -- I had to look into it and find out if this was all a true story, or if it was "based" on a true incident and "prettied up" for the film, as some are. So I read both books -- this one and the one written by Monsieur Pozzo. It turns out that with very minor exceptions, the film is true to the story -- but this book goes so much deeper into it, especially into the author's background. I commend him for talking about it, and tempering his new "hero" status with the reality of his past, rather than hiding it. It makes the story and the relationship even that much more fascinating. If there was ever a lesson that one's history isn't their destiny, this is it. I'm a fan of what seem to others to be unlikely friendship. This one is as unlikely as it gets, and despite that, I believe that they not only changed, but saved each others life. I would recommend seeing the film first, for the basic story, but after reading the book, I watched it a second time, with an entirely new view of the author's character.

(The following review is largely my comment disagreeing with the one star, negative review by "E.T.")After seeing the movie, "The Intouchables," I couldn't believe that a person (Abdel/"Driss") so characterologically amoral would be able to change the way the movie pictured in such a short time. So I bought this book that he wrote for another perspective--and I was not disappointed; it gave that to me and I feel richly rewarded for having read it. (Now I'll start reading "A Second Wind" by Phillippe Pozzo di Borgo.)I recommend you see the movie first, bearing in mind that it's not a documentary but was inspired by the life stories of Phillippe Pozzo & Abdel ("Driss" in the film). The movie does have much more continuity than the book but at the expense of taking many liberties, short cuts, alterations of the actual facts and time lines. (E.g., Abdel/"Driss" worked with Phillippe for 10 years & about a year before Phillippe's first wife, Beatrice, died; Abdel did not play "matchmaker" for Phillipe's second marriage.) It does stay true to the unique and uplifting story of these two men.Although Abdel is not a skilled author -- I found his book fascinating because it was like spending an afternoon chatting with Abdel about his life before, during, and after his time with Phillippe: somewhat disjointed, organized by when something comes into his mind rather than being driven by a need to carefully, very orderly explicate beginnings, middles, and conclusions. Abdel's "style" gives a feeling of the unique reality of Abdel that a more polished version probably would never accomplish. This book's "Forward" by Phillipe expresses surprise that Abdel would open up so much and, IMO, Abdel's style of writing and content, what he covers or doesn't cover, conveys Abdel's ambivalence and views of the real person and his transformation that a more experienced writer couldn't touch.I'm a retired clinical psychologist; much of my last 20+ years of work was in the marriage & family area. I learned there's never just one "true" view of relationships; it always depends on who is telling the story. E.g., the child favored by one parent has a much different view of both parents than his/her sibling does. The "Rashomon effect"* actually exists: "The Intouchables" film gave one view of them, Abdel's and Phillippe's books give two others._______________________* The "Rashomon effect" in Marr. & Fam. work takes its name after Kurosawa's famous film in which 4 different people saw the same event yet each describes motivations, causes and effects in 4 completely different ways.

I thought this to be a good story. The author writes like he's telling you his story over a bowl of peanuts and a beer while sitting in a bar. His personality was both fun and aggravating. It ended rather abruptly but considering the author it's not surprising.

A frank, straight forward description of a life lived uniquely unfettered. A glimpse into a world otherwise unknown to people such as his employer. A story of friendship and love expressed in practical, unpitying simplicity and service. The story told by one two men, who despite having almost no common cultural experiences, found that their personalities meshed, significantly improving the quality of each other's lives. Excellent.

I loved the movie the Intouchables, and immediately sought out the book. It is such an interesting and random pairing of two very different people, and the fact that it is a true story makes even more amazing. The book dives more into Abdel's (Driss's character) background which is a little more complex than what is in the movie. Over the course of the book, you see him grow up, but also feel himself growing up. He doesn't romanticize his story, but rather tries to figure out what led him down that path and is pretty honest about who he is then and now. The friendship that the movie is based on isn't really discussed until the 2nd half of the book but by then it makes sense. Sometimes a interesting story is just about finding out that you are capable of more than you ever thought you could do or be regardless of what that ends up being. Abdel never had any expectations for himself or from others, so it is interesting to see his transformation when he is put in the position of being needed and wanting to be needed.

Definitely entertaining. I hope the movie lives up to the book. I expected this story to be sad but I felt like it was more about finding a unlikely friendship; with mutual respect.

Both my husband and I enjoyed this book very much. It is an easy read because the story is told straight forward. It moves fast and keeps your interest. It is a chance to have a glimpse inside a unique relationship. I had seen the movie and wanted to know the "true" story. The reality is somewhat different than the story presented in the film. We plan to see the film again since reading the book.Of real interest to me was the insight given into the mind and thinking of a "street kid". I was also struck by how pervasive American popular culture is. Abdel makes constant reference to American movie, tv and cartoon characters.I liked that it had a happy ending. Things could have certainly been much different for both the people in the story.

I enjoyed reading the book, although it was not what I expected. The story is only told from one perspective. It would have added to it if both of them had contributed.
