The Neon Rain is the first installment in the Dave Robicheaux series. I have read all of the books in the series as they were released but recently decided to return to the well and reread the first installment. JL Burke evokes New Orleans and the old south with all of its depravity and beauty in lyrical prose that is pure poetry, while still turning out a first class suspense-crime novel. This book has all Robicheaux's demons on display, a corrupt New Orleans Police force, his booze-addled, violent partner, Clete Purcell, the downtrodden sharecroppers and minorities, the criminal and political elite who Dave despises, and Dave's own personal demon: alcoholism. His relationship with Purcell is far more confrontational than in the later books, and his relationship with Annie is just beginning. The violence is there but not as prolific as in later books, and the booze genie comes out of the bottle one more time with a lot of action and degradation to follow. A pair of great psychotics that don't compare with some of the later creations, but still rack the tension up to 11. One of the best series going in my opinion and it was a treat to revisit these characters in the formative year.

Had never heard of James Lee Burke until I read about him in Gardens & Guns. Ordered this book first, to give him a 'trial run'. Wow! Proceeded to order the next five in the series. Love Burke's writing. He expresses what he sees better than anyone I've read in a long time. His descriptions of the bayou, the streets of New Orleans, the people of every ilk that populate Louisiana, are eye-opening. He captures emotions and situations with such clarity. The opening scene in Neon Rain, when Robicheaux is speaking with a convict he knows and who is scheduled to die in the electric chair in a few hours - you can smell the sweat of fear, the desperation and stale smoke, the accused's last grasp for some kind of absolution. I have hours of good reading ahead and can hardly wait to start the next book.

This is the first of the acclaimed Dave Robicheaux mysteries. It's a gritty, thrilling first person noir crime novel told in the edgy and poetic voice of the New Orleans cop Robixheaux. The story has action from the first page and it's less nitty gritty police procedural and more one man vs. evil. Robicheaux is a fallen human like all of us but he seeks the truth in his battle against evil in the form of drug cartels, mobsters, and every other manner of scum. I'm completely hooked on this series now and in love with the vibrant prose of James Lee Burke. New Orleans becomes just as much a character in this book as Robicheaux himself. Lots of great side characters and dialogue, too.

The premise is a good one: New Orleans detective finds a dead body on his day off and that leads him to be the target of an organized crime hit. But the amount of violence is gratuitous--every scene has a violent incident--and the detective is universally misunderstood by the pantheon of corrupt bullies that constitute everyone from small-time porn movie house operators, to organized crime bosses to federal agents to his own fellow cops. The obligatory love story doesn't have enough depth to be convincing. And the amount of street lingo and cop slang used sometimes borders on the comical. The descriptions of the city and the lake on which he lives are vivid and enjoyable. The plot, however, would benefit from less effort to portray the deepest depths of human depravity at the expense of an interesting unravelling of a mystery.

Terrible novel from a pure hack. The people talk the entire story into existence. It's 270 pages of endless, unrealistic dialogue where people don't act naturally but exist purely for exposition. Plus, it's racist too. Here's an early line that shows the author's lack of ability: "The second man was short and olive-skinned, with elongated Semitic eyes and a hawk nose." Didn't know eyes could be a racial identifier? They can if the author is racist.None of this has the ring of truth. You won't believe the narrator is a cop, or that the author knows anything about law enforcement. You won't believe any of the people in the story, they don't act like humans but like words on a page. The people in the story exist for another old white guy to express his Thoughts. The New Orleans setting is as cliched and fake as they come. None of the Vietnam War stuff rings true, either. The real mystery is how is this stuff still in print? Hack work from a career hack.

He finds himself tangling not just with a rural sheriff but with a powerful drug lord, the police hierarchy, and the federal government in a wild and violent quest that reawakens all his demons. The detective, a widower, is an alcoholic and a Vietnam vet with troubled memories of his time as a platoon leader.The Neon Rain was published in 1987 and loyally reflects the events of that time. US intervention in Central America — most notably in support of the right-wing “contras”in Nicaragua — was much in the news, and there were widespread rumors (with an occasional press report) that the CIA was involved in drug trafficking to raise funds to support the effort. Though those reports were discredited, widespread doubts remained for years, compounded by substantial evidence of the agency’s involvement with heroin traffickers in Southeast Asia during the previous two decades.

I buy cookbooks about three times a year with the intention of cooking up a storm, but once I look at the directions - the excitement disappears. Maybe it's an Aries rebel thing, but I never follow a recipe to a tee. Also, I get overwhelmed when the ingredients listed are things I never heard of and the directions are too complicated for my taste.My husband & children tell me all of the time that I'm a great cook, but I'm not the type of cook that loves to stay in the kitchen dreaming of new creations. After skimming through Melba's cookbook while I stood by the mailbox - I couldn't help but notice Melba's beautiful smile on the cover. It was as if Melba's was saying - "Orsayor, Get out of your comfort zone and try some of my recipes." When I finally settled down from my busy day - I picked up Melba's cookbook and started to read. The next thing I knew I was writing out my grocery list and bookmarking pages.My husband laughed at me because he had witnessed me getting excited about recipes and quitting before I started. This time was different - I bought the ingredients and began my Melba's takeover.Melba shares with the readers how she got started with her love of cooking. She also shares the epiphany she received while traveling on an airplane in 2005. The author shares her "Five Lessons for Life In and Out of the Kitchen" - #4 hit home for me. Thank you, Melba for also including "The Care & Feeding of your Cast-Iron Pan." in your cookbook.The photographs are so beautiful in this cookbook - that it makes it hard to decide which dish you want to cook first. I decided on the following: Candied Bacon, Fried Green Tomatoes, & Honey Suckin' Hot Wings.The recipes were so easy to follow. Some of the ingredients were things I already had in my cupboard. That was a plus for me. There's nothing worse than trying to shop for ingredients you never heard of before.Candied Bacon - 5/5Before Melba: I would microwave my bacon for 3-5 minutes. Her recipe called for brown sugar & cayenne pepper. (In my James Chanel Wright voice) Melba!!!!!! This recipe gave my bacon life!Fried Green Tomatoes - 5/5FYI: This was my husband first time trying Fried Green Tomatoes. I have made it before in the past but he always turned his nose up at it. Not this time!!Honey Suckin' Hot Wings - 5/5I was so nervous making the Hot Honey sauce for the wings. Even though the recipe wasn't difficult - I knew the sauce was an important element for the wings. Also, my husband would give me his honest opinion of the sauce was nasty. We don't sugarcoat when it comes to food. LOL!I screamed and did a little twerk when I took my first bite - because it was so good. I'm the first person to run to the local wing spot for my favorites. Not anymore! I'm so proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone to try Melba's recipes.I highly recommend Melba's American Comfort! Grab a copy for you & your friends!

I just ordered this book to add to my collection. I borrowed it from the library the other day and yesterday, I made the smothered pork chops, classic corn bread, and country collard greens. And may I say, I put my foot in it and it was damn good! The recipes were easy to follow with ingredients that are easy to find, and I really loved her insights and advice on cooking. Melba puts her own flavor/flare on American comfort food and gives the reader the most delicious and delightful surprises. When I write my cookbook, guess whose blueprint I will emulate!

Great book. 90% recipes. My daughter and I made the oven fried chicken, candied bacon, honey bun cake, Yams for Mother's Day and they thought I hired a caterer. Great buy.

I've thoroughly enjoyed Melba's cook book. I've tried 4 recipies so far and they were all a home run. I'm not the best cook, so Melba's cook book is my secret weapon.

Love this cook book. I have made multiple things from this book and they all turn out delicious. I have brought other cookbooks in the past, but this book is southern at its best. The fried chicken marinated in the buttermilk leaves the chicken crispy and moist.

Great recipes in this book. Have tried several and they were all delicious!

This is a fun way of exploring different jobs or vocations for your 2 - 5 year old preschooler.The green peaple and their different expressions, accessories (like scooters, pom poms, microscopes or saxophones) and jobs are fun to explore. The colors in the book are bright pastels and the author-illustrator clearly took pleasure in this creation.The most unique feature of this book is the use of jobs instead of animals for words the letters start with. Instead of ants/apes/apples for "A", you get acrobats, artists and astronauts.This is a fun way to learn ABC's with your child. Perfect for bedtime stories. Perhaps they'll dream of being an astronaut, quarterback or scientist!

This book is so cute and fun! The illustrations are so detailed that they bring a lot of life and personality to each pea. My 18 month old daughter loves to read this book and talk about what the peas are wearing and doing, which is why I RECOMMEND BUYING THE LARGER VERSION!! It is well worth the price difference to be able to see the little nuances of each little pea without having to bring the book closer to your face (which also makes it harder to read together). We love this book!! It'll make a great addition to your little one's library!

My 1 year old son is a bit young to be introduced to the ABCs but he loves books and when I saw this one I knew I wanted it for when he's older. He does enjoy it but we haven't made it all the way through yet. We usually get halfway through before he closes it and crawls away. That is his age though. The book is adorable and I'm glad to have it on his bookshelf for when he grows into it.

LMNO Peas in trouble! Peas up here, peas down there, astro-peas and painter-peas, all so cute and brightly colored. Seriously, this book is adorable and it's a nice vocab book. It's best suited for your two year olds, up to three would be okay, and you can hand it to your kindergartner and teach them all those fantastic little professions those busy peas have. It's not fantastic to read to your highly impatient 1.5 year olds, but if you're an avid reader to your child I'd suggest picking it up anyway. Who knows, they may love seeing all those little peas!

We really liked the 1-2-3 Peas book so naturally this was next on our list. The pictures are just as cute and detailed and while I personally prefer the 1-2-3 Peas book to this one, the LMOPeas book is a welcome addition to our book collection! We recommend these books as presents for new parents-to-be. For the first 12 months, I think I enjoyed reading these books and looking at the pictures much more than my child!

My son is 19 months. We have been reading The Green Pea series for a few months. This book and the color one is his favorite. This book goes through the alphabet and different careers you can become later. It is also very colorful. I would definitely recommend!

Really cute little book. The only problem is that the font size of the text is small enough that I really need my reading glasses to read this to my granddaughter, and I don't always plan ahead and have them nearby. That is the one change I would make. (The letters of the alphabet are quite large; no problem reading those!) Otherwise, it is super cute.

Every since my son received this book a few weeks ago he has poured over it morning and night, discovering something new each time, telling me what those peas are up too, asking to have it in the middle of the night... you get the picture. With a whimsical air, Baker illustrates each letter with cute little peas acting out different activities beginning with that sound. Biking, Voting, Volunteering, Parachuting, Bathing, Climbing... on and on. My son particularly LOVES the tiny lady bug that is on the end papers and hidden on each spread... look hard!

My two-year-old's favorite book! he loves the adventures on every page and the added bonus of hunting for the hidden lady bug. If you need something enjoyable for a young reader, I highly recommend this board book (or any in the pea collection). all have been well-loved by the little one, and the adults (who enjoy finding something clever in each of the pictures).

Thank you Nick Wilgus! Oh, man, this book is great. I love the main characters and the dystopian world the poor kids find themselves in. The battle they are fighting due to some unexpected visitors to the planet is scary as hell, and the creep factor on the aliens is off the charts. But what I love most about THIS IS HOW IT ENDS, (Deadworld Book One) is the excellent writing. The deft portrayal of the characters. The easy unfolding of the plot. And yes, even the book cover is perfect. I'll be sitting here waiting for Book 2, Nick, so I hope you've got it ready to go. I'm in no mood to wait. You can't just leave Rory and Billy hanging like this. Or me. There's a war to be waged. Let's get to it.

Yes the main character S are teens, yep they're gay !OK....so what !This is a story about people caught in unimaginable circumstances. In the beginning we have no idea what has happened, neither do the boys. As things are revealed, we think we understand, only to realize ..like the boys ...we have no idea.Emotions are raw and at times we are elated and excited, then scared, even horrified. Just when things seem tow be getting sorted out... new peril arises. Then....strength, determination and ...wait...it's the last page ? Nooooo ! I want more ! I want more, now !

I'm not a great fan of alien-zombie type fiction, and chose this only because the author is Nick Wilgus. Not disappointed.The two main characters, though teens, are engaged in very adult situations. The fact that several previous reviewers look anxiously to reading the follow up book of this story speaks volumes about the author's skill in developing interesting and realistic characters while presenting a fascinating "edge of your seat" plot. Superb writing.

Okay...wait. This definitely ends in a cliffhanger and there’s no sequel yet? This story was really good, but I’m going to be massively disappointed in this author if he doesn’t tie up loose ends and give us a conclusion. I’m waiting.....

This Is How It Ends is an adventurous read, I really enjoyed how the tale unfolded; the story would make and excellent graphic novella. Mr Wilgus creates excellent imagery, yet leaves enough that the reader can put themselves in the role of one of the characters. I am not sure how I would categorize this story, Sci-fi, romance, coming of age.... there is some light sexual content, put nothing graphic and some violence, but also nothing to intense.

What a great story, but I realize this was published a few years ago. When will the next book be out? I'd love to see what happens from here.

This is a great book, and I *need* book two now. I liked how "real" the characters were, and the sparks between Billy and Rory, and Rory's evolution over time vs. his upbringing. I also enjoyed the writing style, it seemed very conversational and was easy to read, but still kept me interested, even without constant bad things happening (though a lot of bad things did occur in the story).

It came in like a lion and went out like a lamb. In other words, it started off good but tricked out in the end. At least we know the author can write.

This book is mostly legal cases but they are very relevant to the security world. It's not a difficult read if you have a basic understanding of law. You don't need to have taken a law class or be an attorney to understand this book. What you do need are 1) a desire to learn a bit of security law and some of the law methods, and 2) a desire to learn about some of the key legal cases that can impact interpretation of laws in security operations. Understanding these few cases will help the security manager understand some of the possible legal nuances of laws that directly impact security. Pastor breaks each case down into easily digested pieces for impacts against the case, law and the correlation between the two.I definitely recommend this book to Security Managers, Security Management students and Attorneys who have clients involved security operations. Any of these people will benefit from understanding the information Pastor presents in this book. This book already has a permanent place in my library of security management books in my office, one that I've used more than once.

Great book that was actually used!

Book provided great insight to the legal woes of Security Administration

This book primarily consists of real legal cases that pertain to each chapter/subject. Great book for the Law Student’s library. My complaint is that the used book I bought had coffee stains through the first 5 chapters. I guess torts of a personal nature (chapter 5) put the prior owner to sleep. I hope that was coffee….it could have made them sick.

Everything arrived as needed ...... will definately use again

This book was excellent for my Med Surg II class Chronic Diseases.Instead of pages & pages of overwhelming information, it punch points the most important factsof what we need to learn as nurses.As well as what is important to know for the HESI'sOnce I got it, my test scores went way up!

This does NOT contain the online supplemental questions. I ordered a new book after the first one did not work. NEITHER give you access. I now am -100$ with books they will not let me return with useless information. DO NOT PURCHASE.

Very helpful in explaining many advanced concepts in nursing. I have found that many instructors from my nursing program have even taken questions directly from this text.

It is very helpful, and goes hand in hand with my book we use in class! It is much simpler to read and get information from!
