My five year old enjoys this book and has asked for it to be re-read many times. The illustration and explanation of how egg is formed and 'travels' is difficult to follow and it seems like there is a gap in the explanation of process. Also, the illustration of this process appears sideways which is equally hard to decipher and explain. A 3.5 is my actual rating.

Bought this for my granddaughter as she has chickens. I figured this would help her understand where chicks come from. I would recommend this book for younger children to learn where chicks come from.

I expected a truly informed book of WWII aircraft carrier combat. That is, I wanted to know how the two sides used the assets they had available and why they chose to use them in that way. I wanted to know how a carrier group goes about trying to protect itself while trying to inflict harm on its enemies. I wanted to know what tactics the torpedo bombers adopted to successfully approach enemy shipping and what tactics the defending aircraft used to destroy the torpedo planes before they could launch while avoiding their own flak. None of these things are presented. For example, Imperial Japanese Naval air operations officers Genda and Fuchida are referred to as geniuses but I have no idea why. What was it about the way they chose to do plan air operations that qualified them as geniuses?What we have here is a fairly standard treatment of the most famous WWII Pacific aircraft carrier engagments. I wanted to feel the anti-aircraft gunfire riddle my wings and smell the blood on a burning flight deck. I wanted to know what formations the various aircraft used on various missions and why. I wanted to know how it was possible that a pilot could maintain such good navigational skills while engaged in life or death combat that he could rendevous with a ship that was no longer where it was when he flew off the deck. Instead we get that a certain squadron launched from a certain carrier attacking a certain other carrier and either did or did not achieve a number of hits.Admittedly, I am spoiled having just read Shelby Foote's excellent Civil War. Oh, what might have been! If the author had drawn character portraits as concisely and described battles as vividly as Foote, that would have been a book!

So, this book has nobody named Caliban and there isn't a War. That means it is probably a reference to Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'. Shakespeare's character, Caliban, is referred to as a monster and subjected to servitude (to put it lightly). Though she is more vulgar in the book than in SyFy's adaptation, the core of the character is there...a ruthless and often cold political force to be reckoned with who manages to compartmentalize her personal and professional lives with impressive skill.The new characters added into the narrative are well-developed and easily as interesting as those from the first novel, which is something I hope they can keep up through the additional books in this series (including the ones as yet unwritten).It says something about the intense and dangerous nature of the events unfolding in this book that an alien biological machine terraforming Venus according to entirely unknown programming takes a backseat in the minds of the characters and that same dismissal carries over to the reader...at least until the end, when it can no longer be ignored.I am very much looking forward to reading the next installment after the way this one ends and I am even more so looking forward to seeing how the television adaptation will tackle things as the events of this book make it onto the screen during either the latter portion of season two or the beginning of season three depending on how they put everything together.Abaddon's Gate takes The Expanse series through the first tentative steps toward becoming a full-fledged, interstellar space opera. From this point on in the series, humanity will no longer be confined to the solar system we're all too familiar with and the surrounding void between our local system and other stars.This is, surprisingly, the first time religion really gets brought into the books...and there is quite a bit of it, as well there should be. This is a series of novels that is largely predicated on first contact, and that would damn well shake up religious thought all over the world. Not only are we dealing with first contact, but first contact with an unknown species that was around billions of years before we came down from the trees and who have the ability to manipulate matter and energy in ways we have only ever imagined possible. We stumbled upon something truly alien to us, waiting out at the edges of our solar system and disastrously attempted to weaponize it because, of course we would...we're notoriously short-sighted and impulsive when it comes to thinking up ways to kill one another in real life and the odds of that changing over the hundreds of years separating us from the fictional future of The Expanse are pretty slim...and if none of this had an impact on us as far as theology is concerned, these books would require far too much suspension of disbelief.By the time Abaddon's Gate starts off, there is a giant ring structure (assembled on Venus by an alien intelligence before lifting from that planet's surface) between the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, looming there and just waiting for us to cross the threshold...and it stands to reason that Holden would be one of the first to cross over into somewhere truly awe inspiring in what it represents.Along with the novelty of having a religious perspective tossed into the mix we get a whole new cast of characters to populate the narrative since Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are the only major ones carried over from the previous novels into this one...and none of them feel like throwaway bit parts, which is something the authors have excelled at so far through the series.This third volume of the series answers a number of questions that have been collecting since the first novel, but it certainly adds just as many new ones that will hopefully be just as exciting to answer in reading what follows.

This all goes to hell, though, when Ganymede Station is attacked by an unknown force that wipes out a group of Martian Marines.Caliban's War introduces some interesting new characters with Bobbie Draper, a beautiful but physically intimidating Marine, who suffers from survivor's guilt after the aforementioned attack as well as Avarasala, the foul-mouthed spymaster of the U.N. However, that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy this book a great deal.However, there is a number of problems with the book which I think hurt its storyline overall. The first of these is the fact this feels a bit like a video game plot. Someone is using the protomolecule to make super-soldiers ala Resident Evil or the Alien movies. This, despite the fact the protomolecule is completely beyond anything human technology can command. We're not talking centuries beyond human technology but billions of years so the idea it can be used to make monsters under the control of Jules Pierre Mao is ridiculous.I also wasn't a big fan of Praxis, the scientist whose missing daughter is the impetuous for the plot. He's an okay character but doesn't really have any layers other than, "Find daughter" and "grow space crops." Even so, it's nice to get a sense of the Rocinante crew by the fact when he comes to them and asks them to help him find his probably-dead child, they immediately drop everything and help him try to find her.In conclusion, Caliban's War is a decent continuation of the Expanse novels even if I felt it was a bit derivative of other sci-fi franchises. I would have been more interested in continued focus on the Mars-Earth-Belter relationships versus more study of the protomolecule. The new characters more than make up for this, though, as does expanding on the existing heroes. Too many books don't continue expanding their leads in sequels, just repeating the behavior of previous works. That isn't the case here.8/10

The Neon Rain is the first installment in the Dave Robicheaux series. I have read all of the books in the series as they were released but recently decided to return to the well and reread the first installment. JL Burke evokes New Orleans and the old south with all of its depravity and beauty in lyrical prose that is pure poetry, while still turning out a first class suspense-crime novel. This book has all Robicheaux's demons on display, a corrupt New Orleans Police force, his booze-addled, violent partner, Clete Purcell, the downtrodden sharecroppers and minorities, the criminal and political elite who Dave despises, and Dave's own personal demon: alcoholism. His relationship with Purcell is far more confrontational than in the later books, and his relationship with Annie is just beginning. The violence is there but not as prolific as in later books, and the booze genie comes out of the bottle one more time with a lot of action and degradation to follow. A pair of great psychotics that don't compare with some of the later creations, but still rack the tension up to 11. One of the best series going in my opinion and it was a treat to revisit these characters in the formative year.

Had never heard of James Lee Burke until I read about him in Gardens & Guns. Ordered this book first, to give him a 'trial run'. Wow! Proceeded to order the next five in the series. Love Burke's writing. He expresses what he sees better than anyone I've read in a long time. His descriptions of the bayou, the streets of New Orleans, the people of every ilk that populate Louisiana, are eye-opening. He captures emotions and situations with such clarity. The opening scene in Neon Rain, when Robicheaux is speaking with a convict he knows and who is scheduled to die in the electric chair in a few hours - you can smell the sweat of fear, the desperation and stale smoke, the accused's last grasp for some kind of absolution. I have hours of good reading ahead and can hardly wait to start the next book.

This is the first of the acclaimed Dave Robicheaux mysteries. It's a gritty, thrilling first person noir crime novel told in the edgy and poetic voice of the New Orleans cop Robixheaux. The story has action from the first page and it's less nitty gritty police procedural and more one man vs. evil. Robicheaux is a fallen human like all of us but he seeks the truth in his battle against evil in the form of drug cartels, mobsters, and every other manner of scum. I'm completely hooked on this series now and in love with the vibrant prose of James Lee Burke. New Orleans becomes just as much a character in this book as Robicheaux himself. Lots of great side characters and dialogue, too.

The premise is a good one: New Orleans detective finds a dead body on his day off and that leads him to be the target of an organized crime hit. But the amount of violence is gratuitous--every scene has a violent incident--and the detective is universally misunderstood by the pantheon of corrupt bullies that constitute everyone from small-time porn movie house operators, to organized crime bosses to federal agents to his own fellow cops. The obligatory love story doesn't have enough depth to be convincing. And the amount of street lingo and cop slang used sometimes borders on the comical. The descriptions of the city and the lake on which he lives are vivid and enjoyable. The plot, however, would benefit from less effort to portray the deepest depths of human depravity at the expense of an interesting unravelling of a mystery.

Terrible novel from a pure hack. The people talk the entire story into existence. It's 270 pages of endless, unrealistic dialogue where people don't act naturally but exist purely for exposition. Plus, it's racist too. Here's an early line that shows the author's lack of ability: "The second man was short and olive-skinned, with elongated Semitic eyes and a hawk nose." Didn't know eyes could be a racial identifier? They can if the author is racist.None of this has the ring of truth. You won't believe the narrator is a cop, or that the author knows anything about law enforcement. You won't believe any of the people in the story, they don't act like humans but like words on a page. The people in the story exist for another old white guy to express his Thoughts. The New Orleans setting is as cliched and fake as they come. None of the Vietnam War stuff rings true, either. The real mystery is how is this stuff still in print? Hack work from a career hack.

The detective, a widower, is an alcoholic and a Vietnam vet with troubled memories of his time as a platoon leader.The Neon Rain was published in 1987 and loyally reflects the events of that time. US intervention in Central America — most notably in support of the right-wing “contras”in Nicaragua — was much in the news, and there were widespread rumors (with an occasional press report) that the CIA was involved in drug trafficking to raise funds to support the effort. Though those reports were discredited, widespread doubts remained for years, compounded by substantial evidence of the agency’s involvement with heroin traffickers in Southeast Asia during the previous two decades.

I buy cookbooks about three times a year with the intention of cooking up a storm, but once I look at the directions - the excitement disappears. Maybe it's an Aries rebel thing, but I never follow a recipe to a tee. Also, I get overwhelmed when the ingredients listed are things I never heard of and the directions are too complicated for my taste.My husband & children tell me all of the time that I'm a great cook, but I'm not the type of cook that loves to stay in the kitchen dreaming of new creations. After skimming through Melba's cookbook while I stood by the mailbox - I couldn't help but notice Melba's beautiful smile on the cover. It was as if Melba's was saying - "Orsayor, Get out of your comfort zone and try some of my recipes." When I finally settled down from my busy day - I picked up Melba's cookbook and started to read. The next thing I knew I was writing out my grocery list and bookmarking pages.My husband laughed at me because he had witnessed me getting excited about recipes and quitting before I started. This time was different - I bought the ingredients and began my Melba's takeover.Melba shares with the readers how she got started with her love of cooking. She also shares the epiphany she received while traveling on an airplane in 2005. The author shares her "Five Lessons for Life In and Out of the Kitchen" - #4 hit home for me. Thank you, Melba for also including "The Care & Feeding of your Cast-Iron Pan." in your cookbook.The photographs are so beautiful in this cookbook - that it makes it hard to decide which dish you want to cook first. I decided on the following: Candied Bacon, Fried Green Tomatoes, & Honey Suckin' Hot Wings.The recipes were so easy to follow. Some of the ingredients were things I already had in my cupboard. That was a plus for me. There's nothing worse than trying to shop for ingredients you never heard of before.Candied Bacon - 5/5Before Melba: I would microwave my bacon for 3-5 minutes. Her recipe called for brown sugar & cayenne pepper. (In my James Chanel Wright voice) Melba!!!!!! This recipe gave my bacon life!Fried Green Tomatoes - 5/5FYI: This was my husband first time trying Fried Green Tomatoes. I have made it before in the past but he always turned his nose up at it. Not this time!!Honey Suckin' Hot Wings - 5/5I was so nervous making the Hot Honey sauce for the wings. Even though the recipe wasn't difficult - I knew the sauce was an important element for the wings. Also, my husband would give me his honest opinion of the sauce was nasty. We don't sugarcoat when it comes to food. LOL!I screamed and did a little twerk when I took my first bite - because it was so good. I'm the first person to run to the local wing spot for my favorites. Not anymore! I'm so proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone to try Melba's recipes.I highly recommend Melba's American Comfort! Grab a copy for you & your friends!

I just ordered this book to add to my collection. I borrowed it from the library the other day and yesterday, I made the smothered pork chops, classic corn bread, and country collard greens. And may I say, I put my foot in it and it was damn good! The recipes were easy to follow with ingredients that are easy to find, and I really loved her insights and advice on cooking. Melba puts her own flavor/flare on American comfort food and gives the reader the most delicious and delightful surprises. When I write my cookbook, guess whose blueprint I will emulate!

Great book. 90% recipes. My daughter and I made the oven fried chicken, candied bacon, honey bun cake, Yams for Mother's Day and they thought I hired a caterer. Great buy.

I've thoroughly enjoyed Melba's cook book. I've tried 4 recipies so far and they were all a home run. I'm not the best cook, so Melba's cook book is my secret weapon.

Love this cook book. I have made multiple things from this book and they all turn out delicious. I have brought other cookbooks in the past, but this book is southern at its best. The fried chicken marinated in the buttermilk leaves the chicken crispy and moist.
