I bought this book in January 2016, after hearing an interview with Dr. Greger on a podcast. At first I found it hard to read, but not because it difficult or confusing, but because it was changing everything I thought I knew about food. I had lost 45 lbs already by eating "healthier."I stopped reading about 1/3 way through and then continued my "healthy lifestyle." This included lots of prepackaged "health" foods and shakes. Lots of sugar and oil too.In March of 2016 I started to get a rash on my face. Psoriasis. I've never had it before but it quickly spread to other parts of my body. By May 2016 I was miserable with my rash and still sitting at 204 lbs, despite my healthy lifestyle and consuming 1500 calories a day.I decided something must be going on in my body, why was it attacking itself? Why wouldn't my psoriasis clear up, despite the creams my doctor prescribed?I went back and started the book "How Not to Die" again in late May 2016. By Mid June I had fully adopted his diet and now in September 2016 I will never look back. I'm down 30 more lbs, my skin is finally clearing up, and I have so much energy!This book has changed my life and my only wish is it cost less so I could buy a copy for all of my friends!Update: 7/2017I've been eating this way for a year now and I could never go back. I'm 36 and feel better than I ever did in my 20's. I'm down over 50lbs in a year- see update pic below!

About 6 months ago I decided to eat a plant based diet because I had experienced the hell of gallstones and could no longer eat fat unless I wanted to keel over in pain for 6 hours. I am one of those people who has to be on my death bed before I go to a doctor and the thought of surgery was enough to get me to make this huge change in my life. Although I wasn't eating meats or real fatty things, I was still using salt, sugar, olive oil, white flour,etc. I also smoked for 40 years but quit a month ago (thank you Chantix, yes it works). My sister turned me on to Dr Greger and I bought his book on Audible. I think he changed my life. He made me understand why a life style of whole plant based foods is the only way to live and why.Well, I listen to his book all the time. I sleep with it on and have it playing in the background instead of radio or TV. I can't say enough about it. In addition to loving the sound of his voice I'm blown away by the information I never knew that I didn't know. Such as: chicken & acceptable salmonella, the risk you taken when eating fish, all the studies he cites that I was never aware of explained in layman's terms as well as why its important to me.Anyway, I now put flax in my morning oatmeal & am actually eating fruit. He convinced me that everything I decide to eat is an opportunity versus a mindless nosh. Because of this man and his book I am getting more nutritional bang for my buck and am feeling great. I haven't had a single gall bladder problem and am exercising a lot more then I used to. He's making me actually enjoy doing all this stuff. All I can really say is wow - get this book. FYI - I bought the hard cover as well as the audible so I had a printed reference at my finger tips.

This book saved me from crippling diverticulitis, which at 32, had already robbed me of nearly 8 years of my life. The weirdest thing about fully plant-based eating is how horrifically extreme it seems before you attempt it, and how OBVIOUS it is after you've made the change. Faced with horrible pain associated with recurrent intestinal infections, I spent YEARS trying and failing on every fad quackpot miracle diet. GAPS, SCD, Paleo, AIP Paleo, FODMAPS. I tried every insanely expensive probiotic, and tried every fiber supplement. Despite spending thousands of dollars and every second of every day trying to heal myself, I was lucky to get two days a month where I felt even remotely like a person. Yet it wasn't until my weight declined to the point where I was faced with resection surgery and associated risk of a colostomy bag that I finally said "enough". This book found me just in time and I'm grateful every single day. It was definitely a process going from barely tolerating 10 grams of fiber daily to eating upwards of 100 grams of unprocessed plant fiber, but I got there, and got my life back in the process. No pain. No constipation. No more flares. Of course my doctors and specialists mumble contemptuously when I present them this information, as if it were obvious but never presented to me because a life without bacon is no life at all. Sometimes, I get angry about losing a sizable chunk of the best years of my life to Western food and medicine. Sometimes I get angry that all my friends and family thing I'm one of those crazy "vegan hipsters". I find the best remedy is just popping on one of Dr. Greger's Youtube vids and enjoying his positivity and enthusiasm for plant-based eating. Thank you Dr. Greger for all that you've done, and all that you continue to do!

This is the second book by Michael Asher that I have read. Having just read his "The last of the Bedu" and found it a fascinating read, I thought I'd try "In search of the forty days road". My only disappointment was when the pages ran out and the book was finished. Michael Asher writes beautifully.

A good read for me. I like this type of book and Asher writes to my liking

Asher attached himself to a clan of salt miners who travelled deep into the desert near the border with Chad. His expertise as a former sapper in the British military was put to good use--he was a more skillful digger than his Sudanese companions.What I remember most about the book was Asher relating how, because of the impoverished sensory stimulation of the desert's sameness, he was able to clearly follow single trains of thought for hours and hours without interruption.I wonder if these same impoverished sensory conditions could have resulted in the delusions associated with the nascence of the three principal revealed religions--Islam, Christianity and Judaism?

Evil: The Science Behind Humanity’s Dark Side by Julia Shaw is a study of evil and an attempt to define evil. Shaw is a German-Canadian psychologist and popular science writer who specializes in false memories. She started a BSc in psychology at the Simon Fraser University. She went on to complete a Masters in Psychology and Law at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. In 2009, she returned to Canada and was awarded a Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia entitled “Constructing Rich False Memories of Committing Crime.”Shaw opens with Hitler, someone that nearly everyone considers as evil; the question is why. There was no trauma in his childhood. He did not torture small animals. Even to the last, he was kind to his dog. Yet, he is responsible for the deaths of millions. Others seem to fit this mold like Charles Manson, or Josef Stalin. They have little in redeeming qualities.What is evil? Is there a definition that can be applied — a tipping point for actions. Shaw does punctuate the chapters of the book with Nietzsche quotes that tend to imply that the answer is no. The Trolley Experiment is an excellent example of the sliding scale of right and wrong, and that experiment can be played on many different levels and settings. These experiments have no right answer many times. If letting a child die to save a person wrong, what about if ten people were saved, or one hundred? Where is the line drawn? Is someone who kills a person by accident or negligence deserving of the title of “murderer” the same as a serial killer? We all have a dark secret of some kind or something we are not proud of in our past. Should that label be made public and remain with us for our entire lives?Shaw does take some twists that are unexpected such as with Jeffery Dahmer and those who commit murder. Recidivism rates for murder are extremely low, and most murders are between people who are close. Someone who kills is doubtful to kill again. Her search for why sometimes clouds the actions. However, some crimes are of necessity. Would anyone considers Jean Valjean to be evil?Evil has changed over time. Homosexuality was considered a crime or a mental illness. Some people thought it was contagious. Some aspects of sexuality today were considered crimes in the recent past. Others remain on the taboo list. Shaw also likes using lists that make the reader feel increasingly uncomfortable to the point that each reader comes upon an action they consider evil. We all do not stop at the same point. We oppose slavery in the modern world but where is the line drawn. Paying someone a non-living wage is permissible, but slavery is evil. Killing puppies or kittens is considered evil, but the industrial slaughter of cows, pigs, and chickens is allowable.Nietzsche said, “There is no such thing as moral phenomena, but only a moral interpretation of phenomena.” Although many of us can agree that evil exists at one edge of the spectrum, how far does it extend to the center? Shaw gives examples and situations to show how large the grey area is between good and evil. Time moves the marker. Differences in our own thinking and experiences create different tipping points for each of us. We all agree are that there is evil, but what is evil varies between people.

Before I begin I have just one question for Ms. Shaw: Would you choose to live next to a known serial child predator if you had kids?The answer, by the terms of her own book, should be, sure, why not? After all, he's not evil, just misunderstood. That is the overarching message of this book: there is no evil, only that which we label evil. But throughout the book, Shaw repeatedly demonstrates that she has very little understanding of what true evil really is. Somehow, because we all might have a tendency to, say, lash out at a loved one in a moment of frustration, we really can't judge a Hitler or a Ted Bundy. The absolute pinnacle in moral relativism.In my college writing tutorial, we always had to say something positive before we could give any criticism. I remember one paper I shared with some of my dormmates in an attempt to find that positive thing. One of them suggested, "You used nice quality draft paper." I'm left feeling a little like that in my attempt to review this book. I guess the best I could say is that if my sixth grade daughter had written it, I'd be reasonably impressed (although I'd wash her mouth out with soap).Shaw is all over the place in talking about all kinds of topics that could, theoretically, have to do with evil, but all of her topics are so shallow and disorganized that there is very little substance to them and often the connection with evil is tenuous, at best. Many topics I was left wondering why she talked about them at all. For instance, she spills a great deal of ink talking about sexual fantasies. Who the hell cares? I don't care what's going on in your mind when you're alone in a room with your right hand occupied. But that's not what's evil about sex. What's evil about sex is when it's used coercively to hurt other people. So are rapists and child molesters evil? Shaw herself raises the question, but can't bring herself to answer it. I think it's pretty unequivocal that they have voluntarily chosen to do evil acts. So why does she stop short of using the word evil? And no, just because I might do something like snap at my husband does not mean that I am just like those rapists and child molesters. There is a line.In another instance, Shaw asks whether cyberbullies are evil. Previously, she had defined cyberbullying as relentlessly stalking and harassing another person online. But as she goes to answer her question, she diverts into an utterly pointless discussion of internet trolling, which is in no way related to cyberbullying. And she doesn't even understand what trolling is. Posting a snarky come-back is not trolling. Trolling is the intentional derailment of an online discussion by repeatedly and deliberately posting distracting, circular, meaningless or ad hominem arguments. In any case, she conveniently leaves her question unasked - so is it evil to stalk and harass someone to the point of breakdown or suicide? It is certainly cruel. Is cruelty not evil?In fact, Shaw clearly demonstrates her lack of understanding of evil when she talks about "trustworthy" vs. "creepy" people and uses Nobel Peace Prize winners as her examples of "trustworthy" individuals. Is she aware the Henry Kissinger has won that prize? Aung San Suu Kyi, who was involved in the Rohingya genocide? Barack Obama who ordered the assassination of an American sixteen-year-old, not to mention the devastation of Libya, Honduras and Haiti? I'm sorry, but winning a Nobel Peace Prize is no guaranty of trustworthiness.Another flaw is the supposed "science" in the book. Sure, Shaw references dozens of studies, but either they were poor studies to begin with or Shaw does a poor job of explaining and elucidating them. In one study, for instance, participants were left alone in a waiting room after being told that a woman with schizophrenia would be joining them. This alleged woman's things were on the second of seven chairs. The participants were then observed to see how far they would sit from this alleged schizophrenic woman. They found that people sat an average of 2.4 chairs away from her. The obvious flaw in this study is that it apparently didn't include any non-schizophrenic control situations. I don't know about you, but I would sit at least two to three chairs away from *any* stranger in a waiting room. What were they expecting - that people would sit right next to her when there were other open chairs available? That's not evidence of bias against mental illness, it's just how people space themselves in a small room. There were many other odd studies of this nature, plus, of course, she has to haul out the Milgram experiments and the Stanford Prison Experiments, as if there's a drop of new insight to be culled from those.Probably the fatal flaw of the book is that she never addresses the issue of power. In fact, she conflates a man who kills his significant other because she was leaving him with a woman who kills her abusive significant other in a long-winded discussion of "murder fantasies". She does understand that getting away from an abuser is not about a "murder fantasy", right? And never does she speak about political power and all the devastating evil that neoliberalism has wrought - the dozens of countries invaded, millions of people killed and displaced, our world-wide network of torture "black sites", the starvation of Yemen, the "Dirty War" in Argentina in which dissidents were captured, tortured and ultimately dropped, alive, out of airplanes into the ocean, etc. - all for U.S. imperialistic and profit motivations. Can Shaw really say with a straight face that those acts - and the people who engineered them - were not evil? Was Hitler himself not evil? Or is there no leap for Ms. Shaw between a regretful instance of yelling at a loved one and throwing Jews in ovens?Shaw wants us to empathize with "Pharma Bro" Marin Shkreli because he grew up in a culture that values money more than people. Guess what? We all did. Yet most of us would never let AIDS patients die because our obscene profits are more important than people being able to afford their medicine. In fact, very, very few people would do what Shkreli did, and it's not just because most of us don't have the opportunity. It's the reverse, in fact. Most of us don't have the opportunity because we're not so blatantly ruthless that we would even think to pursue "opportunities" like that. We have words for people who are that blatantly ruthless. "Evil" is the first that comes to mind. (Oh, but Shkreli totally proved his humanness because he cried at his sentencing, so it's all good. Spare me.)Oh, and we can all understand and sympathize with Jeffrey Dahmer - he was just lonely. I know when I get lonely I carve up a teenage boy or two and stuff them into my fridge. Oh, wait, no, I don't. I suspect you don't either. (BTW, she completely messed up the story of Dahmer's discovery and arrest, which is pretty sad considering it's right there on Wikipedia for free.)I agree with Shaw that we have to be wary of "otherizing" people and dehumanizing them. Independent bank guarantees, also known as standby letters of credit, are an alter ego of conventional letters of credit. It is used in cases, when conventional letter of credit is not appropriate for certain reasons or when merchants believe bank guarantees are relevant.Despite the fact that many believe that letters of credit are different from bank guarantees, they are almost identical. Moreover, there is common feature between them, which is full independence from underlying transaction.The book under review is a result of scholarly work of Roeland Bertrams, professor at VU University Law School in Amsterdam. The author did a tremendous job by collecting absolutely all information about bank guarantees and comparing its application in common lawand continental law countries.The author applies not only doctrinal method of legal research, but also empirical. Thus, he gathered opinions of other specialists from different countries and conducted field study with the purpose of summarizing legal practice, which is valuable source of information.The chapters and sub-chapters are written in "intro - culmination - conclusion" fashion, which immediately affected the structure of sentences. In some cases, author writes in a very laconic and simple style, whereas in other instances, he uses long and sophisticated sentences. The language of text is actually sophisticated in certain instances, which can be explained with reference to the nature of bank guarantees, which are complicated financial instruments.The author also uses simple diagrams in order to explain certain concepts or doctrines, which makes them accessible to ordinary reader, but personally, for me, they were not always accessible.The most interesting chapter of the book is a chapter, where author explains how to write text of bank guarantee correctly with reference to common mistakes.One of the author's observations is remarkable in this context. Particularly, he notes that "when drafting in the English language, continental lawyers often use standard English text for guarantees, such as those issued in favor of UK banks or those in the LMA documentation, believing them to be independent first demand guarantees whereas these are in fact a traditional suretyship" (fn. 7, p. 91)The present remark is very important since it is common mistake of not only of European lawyers, but also of lawyers from post-Soviet countries. Besides, author differentiates between bank guarantee, conventional guarantee and suretyship.In most cases, lawyers commit same mistakes, confusing conventional guarantee with bank guarantee. The present book is written with purpose to prevent them from committing such mistakes in future.Moreover, even though the author refers to the bulk of sources from different jurisdictions, he notes that it is a comparative study. Particularly, he writes: "although this book covers case law and legal writing from a number of countries, it is not a comparative study, and no particular system of national law has been taken as a point of reference". Instead, the author inserts that phenomenon of independent guarantee has been point of reference.It is also remarkable that while the book is entitled "Bank guarantees in international trade", it separately discusses standby letters of credit. The author believes that standby credit is a U.S. version of bank guarantee, even though he realizes that there are certain differences.I strongly recommend this book to all bank lawyers, in-house lawyers and lawyers, involved in transnational deals. It is also particularly useful for academic lawyers, which are involved in comparative legal studies.

This book is a godsend for people working in the highly specialized world of independent bank guarantees and standby letters of credit. It has been endorsed by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).I have not been able to find another book that even comes close in the wealth of information and detail that this treatise gives on the subject of bank guarantees. It also includes the URDG and ISP codes in appendices. The authors knowledge of the subject has incredible breadth and depth and covers everthing from the basics(e.g., legal nature of instrument, types of guarantees)to the very advanced sub-topics(e.g., methods of payments, fraud, etc)It is a heavy read, written more for as legal practitioners specializing in banking law and solicitors. I own hundreds of marketing books, and Bob Bly's books are among the most useful. Three years ago I paid several hundred bucks (on eBay) for Dan Kennedy's "Mailbox Millions" info product -- which was excellent. Bob Bly's "Direct Mail Revolution" covers much of the same material for just $15. Plus, the resources are updated.So that's the good news.The bad news is the publisher chose thin paper for this book and my yellow highlighter bleeds right through the pages. Darn the luck: I can already tell I was going to burn through a handful of highlighters on this title. The publisher should make this a Kindle MatchBook title so I could use the ebook too.

This work by Steiner is not an easy read by any standards. It is usually worked with in study groups, as the content is hard to master. William Lindeman brings a deep personal understanding of the meaning into his translation. Some reviews have called it closer to the German, but I do not agree. I believe the English meaning of the original German contents are represented in this translation, distinctly not the literalistic wording. There are words, like 'Gemut', for example, that do not have an exact English equivalent and William makes note of this so that the reader may work with the underlying concepts and meaning.

Lindeman and Wilson are excellent translators. Rudolf Steiner's writing is not necessarily reader friendly. Lindeman did a great job staying close to the German original. The book could have been printed in a larger format thereby allowing room for notes and easy reading.Lindeman also translated Steiner's earlier works with Mercury Press that does little to make them available to wider public.

The Philosophy of Spiritual Activity, by Rudolf Steiner, is the most important book humanity has produced since the writings of John the Evangelist. The inner practice of thinking the thoughts developed in the book, thinking them through exactly as they are written, brings about a self-transformation on all levels, an unfolding of new capacities hitherto scarcely realized, an evolutionary leap of the first order. Of the many versions published in English over the years, the translation by William Lindeman is by far the best.
