I've read many books on college essays and have long ago stopped buying or reading them because they were more or less the same. The only reason I bought this one was because I enjoyed Toor's memoir on her stint as a college admissions officer. Her frank and intimate tone resonates with me. I can't say I learned anything new from this book, but I DO recommend it to students. Most books out there are either dense (for example, Harry Bauld's book is a classic but is geared more to parents than students--and parents have no business writing their children's essays) or simplistic (like Heavenly Essays, which is a cookie cutter). Toor's book is accessible but doesn't reduce the essay down to a formula. Unlike Ethan Sawyer's book, which guides its reader through the basics and provides a useful framework, Toor mainly provides a collection of helpful advice. If a student has the time (for example, the summer before senior year) and motivation, I recommend they read both Sawyer and Toor's books before they start writing their essays.

I'm only a rising junior, so reading "Write Your Way In" was somewhat preemptive, but I bought and read it just last week with the intention of using it to help my own current fiction writing and also maybe giving me some ideas for college essays next year. Not only did I get some ideas, but at practically every page I was thinking of possible "aboutnesses" (an important word to learn from the book). I spent a lot of my time "reading" just staring at the floorboards of my porch, thinking about all kinds of possible essays, not just for college, but in general, too, which is exactly the kind of sudden creativity I was hoping for.To supplement the advice, "Write Your Way In" is full of well-written essay recommendations; my personal favorite was "My Favorite Teacher" by Robert Kurson, and that's one of the several offered in just one page. There are examples of essays written not just by established authors, but also some of Toor's students, which simultaneously feel less and way more intimidating than the more experienced writers' ones.While this book was filled with important grammar reminders and tips on how to sound the most like you, the best advice I got from my first read was that when writing my essay, I should feel more that I am writing to a friend rather than to a faceless, unknown admissions officer; to be as casual and authentic as I can be without being too casual. It'll be good to know I have this resource when next summer comes around and I get to have the pleasure of stressing while writing my actual college essay—maybe now I won't stress as much—but even just as a read without the express intention of college essay help, it's worth it.—Lillian R.

This review is written by my daughter (since this is a family account):I absolutely just loved this book and devoured it. I found useful tips on almost every page. One of the challenges that I, and what I assume most others face, is that we don't have any "unfortunate" circumstance. This book showed me how to write so that even simple events can be a learning experience. After reading the Amanda and Jim essay in particular, it opened my mind to think about my own experiences in a new light.Another outstanding feature of this book is the last chapter. It lists problematic words and word endings that weaken the essay. What's great about this is that you can use your word processor's search feature to find these and then reword the sentence.And, by the way, thank you for strongly recommending that I read MLK's Letter from Birmingham Jail. I glanced over it twice but ultimately did read it in its entirety. I'm grateful for that. It wonderfully complements the book.

This book is not only well written and researched but flows from chapter to chapter with ease. Maybe it's my love of the subject and the love of his subjects, but I couldn't put it down and was continually amazed at the impact Lomax had on the USA and the world. What we listen to today, how we listen to it and understand it and most notably who we listen to is in large part a direct result of the lifelong work of John and Alan Lomax, whatever the music is that you listen to. Social consciousness, preserving our heritage, understanding and appreciating the everyman in rural and urban settings were a given in Lomax's life. Appreciating the musicians as fine artists and that remarkable ear of his to pick out the best and to uncover some of the finest American and World Music ever recorded is truly phenominal. Our lives have been so enriched by this man that he truly should be a houshold name. This fine biography does justice to the man who changed all our lives for the better whether we know it or not. For his work on Leadbelly recordings alone, I will be eternally grateful. When you consider his field recordings in Italy and Spain then you are reaching a plateau no one else has ever or will ever achieve again.Read this book.

Szwed is an excellent biographer and folklorist. (Disclosure: I took a class with him at Temple University decades ago.) His subject, Alan Lomax, came to the collecgtion of folksongs via his father, John Lomax, who belonged to the heroic age of folklore studies, when men (and one woman, Olive Campbell) went trekking into the hinterlands armed with smiles, the promise of a free drink, and a half ton of cumbersome recording equipment. Alan, John's youngest son, at first had a love-hate relationship with his father's avocation, joining him on a song-catching tour only when family fortunes had sunk so low that a meager stipend from the Smithsonian was the only source of funds. But Alan, more of a musician than John, eventually got his own rhythm. With his father, he discovered Lead Belly in a southern prison. Alan managed to get to know practically everyone from the 30's onward. He went on a collecting trip with Zora Hurston and he lived long enough to be sort of the godfather of the folk revival of the 60's -- which would not have been possible without his Smithsonian recordings. What's especially poignant in Szwed's biography is the idea that by the time Alan Lomax came of age as a folklorist, the motives driving folklorists had shifted. The previous generation gathered songs and tales partly as a way of locating an "authentic" American culture, of finding a land grandees in Boston or New York never deigned to hear of. For Alan Lomax, the motive seems more contemporary: to preserve what he could of folk culture that was being swept away by popular culture and media. His description of a folklore pavilion he proposed for the 1939 World's Fair has this avowed aim. But as Szwed notes (without comment), his ideas were either ignored, co-opted, or given to companies sponsoring pavilions to implement (Heineken Brewery did a Dutch folkore theme). That's a parable right there!

The story of Alan Lomax begins with his father who was also a famous collector of folk music. The family members were eccentric and Alan inherited both the positive and negative traits. He set off to become a collector of folk music at his father's insistence. However, he grew in his love for the music and also in his desire to understand the deeper reasons why folk music exists, how it changes from place to place, and finally, how it fits into the study of anthropology.The writing although dense and filled with long quotations from Lomax, always has an element of surprise. Perhaps because the events were taking place in the early part of the Twentieth Century, there was more openness and innocence. Lomax traveled with his wife and daughter, he spent nights in shacks with African-Americans, and he was constantly in need of money. He was friends with Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Muddy Waters, Jelly Roll Morton, and Pete Seeger, not to mention Carl Sandburg and Margaret Mead.When Roosevelt became President, Lomax was recognized for his amazing depth and breadth of folk music contacts, and frequently performed for the White House. He earned a Carnegie Grant. He spent time abroad searching for folk music in England, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, and Italy. His notes and recordings gradually became touchstones not only for the musicians of his era, but of many musicians of the future.It was a pleasure to read a book and do it at a leisurely pace. As I read it, I began seeing how folk music has affected jazz, classical music, and pop music. For a musician or a non-musician, it is a wonderful journey.

Lelani Black maybe of my new favorite aurthors! I finished this book in one day it kepted me wanting more for the entire read. This is about empty hearts finding love. Evangeline signed up for a Christmas curise to find a husband and a baby daddy. Liam is looking for nothing other than rising to his post of Captain of his own ship. But she fails to find what she came on the cruise to find and he finds a whole lot more. After time a part they realize that their connection is still strong but he is still a Captain of a Cruise ship and she wants not be at home waiting. I really liked it!

I love erotic romance and I love a good story. While All Hands Below started strong and hot, I was a little overwhelmed by the last few chapters that had back-to-back-to-back sex scenes. Don't get me wrong, the sex scenes were beautifully written, though at times they did read like porn. However, I felt Liam and Evie's relationship and passionate desire to be together was already established so those scenes weren't necessary and it almost felt like filler for the author. I ended up skipping those scenes and they were about 2-3 chapters worth.In actuality, the story is probably three stars but because it was well-written, the review is bumped up to four. It could've been a five-star book had it not been for the abundant amount of sex scenes at the very end.

This is a delicious erotic novel! The main characters (Evangeline and Liam) are, of course, sexy and gorgeous, but they also have emotional depth. We get to see them each work through what interferes with HEA and actually get to HEA realistically! The author's writing style flows and she provides great setting detail, so you feel like you are there. And being 'there' on a cruise is a pretty good place to be! If you're looking for a steamy, erotic read with a good story, All Hands Below is a great choice.

What a sizzler of a story between Evangeline and Liam. What a wonderful romance this was on the high seas. Delicious.
