Torben Kuhlmann was born in Germany in 1982. Highly creative as a young child, Torben was recognized as early as kindergarten for being a gifted draftsman. He was captivated by small airplanes, strange machines, and steaming trains; these elements made their way into his drawings. He studied illustration and design at the Hamburg University for Applied Sciences. His preferred media are pen and watercolor. He also works with acrylics, oil paints, and digital programs. He works as a freelance illustrator in Hamburg. I bought this book for my 5 yr old grandson (well all 3 of the mouse adventures), and they are simply wonderful. The art is gorgeous, the story is clever and delightful. My grandson will love them, I have no doubt. I love how the story weaves the mouse's adventures with historical information. It inspires inventiveness at the same that it provides a history of invention. All within the endearing story of an inventive, brave, and adventurous mouse. There is excitement, failures, and successes. I highly recommend these books.

Yet another great adventure for a little mouse to make a big move. I love the detailed art of the book. It is definitely of the same level in terms of story and art as the previous books by the same author. The story behind the pictures is not very sofisticated, however, it is easy to understand by 5-7 y/olds. My child and my friend’s child adore the book.

I was drawn to this book because of the amazing illustrations of books and an old-fashioned library (with card catalog and everything!)I was smiling the entire time I was reading this and taking in the gorgeous pictures. I'm excited to give it to my cousin's kids for Christmas and read it with them too!

We loved the story of the little mouse on a search for his family treasure and the art work that goes with it is fabulous.

First there was Lindbergh, a curious mouse who was inspired to create his own wings. The incredible illustrations in the book show his progress from a sort of glider, to a steam-driven contraption, to his final model. Readers can also see his test flights and how he perseveres after each one to correct the design flaws and make improvements for the next attempt. Then, there was Armstrong, who became the first mouse to reach the moon. Now there is a young mouse named Pete who is trying to locate a treasure that once belonged to an ancestor and has been a family legend for generations. He recruits the Professor from the University of Mice to help research the ocean liner his ancestor traveled on and where it might possibly have sunk with the treasure on board. What follows is a tale of experimentation and inventions (diving bells, submarines, diving suits), and brave explorers.The illustrations show the University hidden behind the walls of a bookstore, design sketches for the inventions, and scenes of Pete and the Professor testing out their inventions. Particularly striking are the tiny sub juxtaposed next to a whale, and the sub surrounded by a silvery school of fish. Readers will also notice that the Professor has a wall covered with pictures of his heroes - Ben Franklin, Tesla, and Edison, among others.Anyone who enjoys stories with heroic little animals like Despereaux or the Library Mouse will want to add Edison to their favorites. Although it's a fictional story, it would be a great read-aloud for a class studying inventors or explorers. It could also be used to study life-skills like problem-solving and perseverance. What an extraordinary observer, writer, and biographer is Richard Holmes, author of "This Long Pursuit: Reflections of a Romantic Biographer." In 1964, as an 18-year-old, he took himself off to south-central France to learn more about Robert Louis Stevenson, who, seeking better health, had relocated to France for several years in the 1870s. Even without formal academic training, Holmes quickly hit upon two valuable methods for studying the lives of others. The first was to walk in the footsteps and moccasins of his subjects, and the second to keep meticulous notebooks with pages divided into columns to sort out facts from personal assessments. In 2000, decades after launching this freelance approach to biography, the by-now-celebrated Holmes was asked to teach a postgraduate course on the discipline of biography. After several years teaching, this volume was, it might be said, destined to be a meditative reflection on a notable career."This Long Pursuit" is divided into three sections of fairly equal length. The first puts Holmes's career into perspective, offers lessons on the art of biography including his celebration of how science and literature often cross-pollinated each other, and presents ten commandments for writing lives. I must confess to treasuring in particular this section, as most of my career at the CIA involved the biographic assessment of foreign leaders. Section two, titled "Restorations," has Holmes examining five women: Margaret Cavendish, Zelide, Madame de Stael, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Mary Sommerville. Section three, "Afterlives," focuses on five men (Keats, Shelley, Thomas Lawrence, Coleridge, and Blake), dwelling on the issue of how assessments of the famous can change over time.

Richard Holmes writes wonderful biographical material. This book of musings on the craft of writing biography inspired me to read his Age of Wonder, which I also loved. I tried his biography of Shelley, but found it too detailed and frankly boring.

A wonderful book. Mr. Holmes undertakes a hero's quest to the Romantic Era and brings back much to enlighten and delight his readers.

I'm only half way through so far, but this book is awesome. Incredible depth of knowledge on the topic and a fun quick pace of writing.

Classic essays

This is the second of his books I've read. Since he and I are almost the same age, I believe I read his first or second when it came out. I liked it as I vaguely recall, but I've matured; I love this book. It's the best kind of book because it leads you on to many, many others. I have ordered at least 4 or 5 books relating to people he discusses or literary or scientific matters he treats, and I think even one travel book. I'm also charmed by Sir Richard putting himself in the book, discussing what biography and some of his subject mean to him. It's a much more personal approach. I recommended it to a friend for his reading group because the issues, people, ideas and events discussed are endlessly fascinating and eternally debatable.

The observation by Erasmus probably indicates Richard Holmes's own priorities when in school and at university. His love of great literature and those who create it is almost palpable.While explaining “how the Romantic generation discovered the beauty and terror of science,” in The Age of Wonder, Holmes focuses on what “became the first great age of the public scientific lecture, the laboratory demonstration and the introductory textbook, often written by women. It was the age when science began to be taught to children, and the `experimental method' became the basis of a new, secular philosophy of life, in which the infinite wonders of Creation (whether divine or not) were increasingly valued for their own sake…Finally, it was the age which challenged the elite monopoly of the Royal Society, and saw the foundation of scores of new scientific institutions, mechanics institutes and 'philosophical' societies.'"What we have in This Long Pursuit is also a work of rigorous and eloquent reflections shared by the same Romantic biographer, with his focus on “the meeting of two great modes of human discovery — imaginative literature and science — [that] has become one of the most urgent subjects for modern biography to study and understand. I believe this is particularly so in both Britain and America. You could say that if our world is to be saved, we must understand it both scientifically and imaginatively.” Biography “is ‘a handshake.’ A handshake across time, but also across cultures, across beliefs, across disciplines, across genders, and across ways of life. It is a simple act of complex friendship.” I certainly view Holmes as a friend, one whose brilliant work is a welcome “handshake” of mutual respect.It has always seemed to Holmes that “the essential spirit of biography – of English biography at least – has been a maverick and unacademic one.” It comes as no surprise, therefore, that many (if not most) of of his subjects in recent books have been outliers. Much of the most interesting and innovative as well as exciting work biography “has been done outside the establish institutes of learning, and beyond the groves of academe.”These are among the major figures on whom he focuses, listed in alpha order: William Blake, Fanny Brawne, Lord Byron, Mary Cavendish, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Germaine de Staël, Elizabeth Farren, William Godwin, John Keats, Thomas Lawrence, Ada Lovelace, Samuel Pepys, Percy Shelley, Mary Somerville, Isabelle van Tuyll (Zelide), and Mary Wollstonecraft.There are several reasons why Holmes is one of my favorite historians. Here’s one. Great historians write books that are, for me, “magic carpets” that enable me to travel far beyond my world to ancient Greece or Bunker Hill or Victorian London or...almost anywhere and at any time, really. I feel like I am tagging along with him as we explore together the given portion of the past. Later, once I have finished reading one of his books, I am again reminded of this passage in T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets: "We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time."Thank you, Richard Holmes, for expanding my world and enriching my understanding of it.

As an experienced woodburner I purchased the book with specific items in mind and Ms Irish (as typical of her excellent services) included very much more.While the book afforded detailed tutorials, hints and a number of fascinating projects that were both educational and interesting, the characteristics and the use of various woodburners is demonstrated in great detail. This aspect and the tutorials are superbly done and each alone worth the purchase. The projects begin at the novice level and build upon each preceding effort. Tools, materials, and preperation are clearly explained and step-by-step project instructions are clearly illustrated.

I am a beginner and this is the book sitting by my side as I learn. Every step is broken down in detail. Not like some books which give you a sample of the authors work and then basically tell you to go do it, Irish's book gives you detailed instruction on HOW to do it. Projects grouped as beginner intermediate and advanced. I have gotten a number of books to help learn pyrography and this the best on on the shelf.

This is a very well written and illistrated book by one of my most admired artists. What makes the book so good is the author's ability to TEACH. Many artists can show you their work, but being able to teach you how to do what they do is what makes a great artist a great teacher. This book will provide you with valuable insight into the techniques that Lora Irish uses and I believe you will finish this book a better Pyrography wood-burner than you were before reading it, especially if you are new to this hobby.

The book covers techniques from most basic to advanced in a clear manner with tons of illustrations and photos.I especially appreciated the explanation of both using a more basic single temperature tool (inexpensive and the one most beginners would be using) and the more advanced multi-temp tool.By following the chapters in the book from beginning to end, especially utilizing the practice board (using 1x1 squares on a larger board to test various techniques) the reader can quickly learn and improve their skill level.

I wish it had designs with Christmas and other holiday ideas/patterns.

I've lived in Africa nearly 20 years and have used this map before. The "updated" version needs some revisions for accuracy in Tanzania. The quality of the paper is poor, after using the map for one week, already the folds were tearing. The older versions were better quality.

Michelin maps are reliable, updated and easy to read. I find their coverage of Africa better than other options. Boundaries are updated to the latest international agreements (or disagreements as a matter of fact). The roads layer seems to reflect what actually happens on the ground, given the feedback I receive. I would certainly recommend it to travelers or fellow cartographers like me.

A perfect map if you are touring the grasslands of southern and central Africa, as many safaris do. It gives great detail without having unnecessary info on Northern Africa, which is usually on a different trip.

Came in very handy during our visit to South Africa last year - accurate as far as we could tell. Good thing to have if you're driving around the countryside.

The map is colorful and the roads and highways cover most of South Africa which was my interest . However I was planning to use the map for navigating the roads, but the roads have no identification by name or number that I can find on the map and it will be of limited use to me. Never having used a Michelin map before, I was disapointed that it wasn't like a AAA map of roads in the United States. Live and learn.

Bloch, a French professor at Yale, writes about the life of French poet Stéphane Mallarmé and his 1897 transformative, "deeply optical" poem, “One Toss of the Dice Never Will Abolish Chance,” which (according to Bloch) "made us modern." The books provides a good overview of Mallarmé’s life and the artistic environment in which he worked. The attempt to explicate the poem itself is also interesting. However, Block is less persuasive when he claims that Mallarmé’s poem led to modernist movements in art (cubism, Picasso's "Demoiselles d'Avignon," Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase"), music (Satie), and literature (Apollinaire, Eliot, Proust, Woolf, Joyce) and even less convincing when he tries to connect the poem with later developments in science (Einstein) and technology (hypertext and the World Wide Web).

A beautifully written and thorough study of Mallarme's life and the creation of his most radical and influential work. Particularly strong in setting Mallarme within the culture of his era. Bloch makes a strong case for the crucial conceptual place of the poem in the subsequent development of modernism in the arts. But his ideas about its influence on the sciences are far-fetched to put it mildly. Like many scholars immersed in the humanities, he has little grasp of scientific thinking and misinterprets correlation with cause-and-effect. The scientific developments he discusses may have grown from the same societal and intellectual ferment that inspired Mallarme and so take a place in science analogous to that of Mallarme's work in the arts but that does not mean they were inspired by him. However this is a minor complaint within the context of a wonderfully illuminating book.
