Same story you've seen many times over in better SHTF novels. Not at all interested in further episodes. Most of this one is completely unbelievable. Is anybody writing any good SHTF fiction these days? All I'm finding is same old same old plots and characters.

I really enjoyed the book. It's fun wondering what actually would happen if such a horrific event did occur. I think you have our world pegged. It would be survival of the strong against the panicked and the evil. I pray this never happens, but I believe in being prepared. Good for thought!!

I read the first part of this series awhile back and have been looking forward to a continuation. This new series is as good as the Southern portion which I hope she returns to soon. In the meantime I will follow closely the Northern saga!

Well written. One of my favorite authors. The plot is well defined and reaches a logical climax. I look forward to other of her books

Love post apocalypse books especially ones that can happen. Exciting New book that frightened me ....!it could happen.. Any day

The characters in this book were introduced in the free mini-ebook given away by the author in return for signing up for his newsletter. Those who haven't read this book yet or the first three chapters in this series (Southern Grit) would do well to go to his website (harleytate.com) and sign up, to get some background for the series. This is the second trilogy in the "Nuclear Survival" series, and it will probably follow the same method Mr. Tate used in his (separate) nine-installment "After the EMP" series a trilogy about one group of characters, a second trilogy about a new group of characters (beginning with this book), and likely a final trilogy combining the two groups. If you haven't read the first three installments in this "Nuclear Survival" series (subtitled "Southern Grit"), you might want to read those three books/installments before starting this one.As usual, Tate masterfully develops the characters, personalities, and relationships. The story line doesn't get boring at any point. He also doesn't clutter the action with a lot of military/firearm technical details like other authors are prone to do. Some liberties are taken here and there, but it would be a dull story if this weren't true, and the author doesn't go to the extremes that some others in this genre do. Both of Mr. Tate's series are highly readable by novices to the EMP/nuclear war genre. I highly recommend them all. Those with Amazon Kindle Unlimited subscriptions can read all of Mr. Tate's offerings (as well as many other ebooks) free of additional charges (the author still gets paid by Amazon). If you haven't read any of this series, I suggest signing up for the newsletter at the above listed website, then reading the first trilogy "Southern Grit," and then starting in on this trilogy (which begins with this installment). You might also read the other (nine-book) series "After the EMP" while you're waiting for the next installment for this series to come out.

This first in the series shows how fast society begins to crumble after an EMP. For me, the characters are so real and down to earth, that they are normal. The author has illustrated both the good and the bad in society. This EMP happened without warning and if one of the main characters is correct, there are nukes on US soil ready to be launched.Strangers coming together to help strangers and trying to survive what may come next. One of my favorite characters was Max and his horses, Beatrice and Bethel.Looking forward to the next in this series and the adventures of Midge and Danny. Will they be able to complete their journey to Suttons Bay? There is an overabundance of bad a**es around every corner.I like the fact that the premise of hope does shine through despite the terrible nature of this situation. And, there is an excellent mix of good people in the novel to equal out the bad ones.Highly recommended. Please note that I borrowed this with my KU subscription.

While this is the 1st book of the Northern Exposure series it is kind of the 4th book of the Southern Grit series in a way, since it is following the other hacker with whom Grant shared his information. It has a similar story line of need to get somewhere but also away from the possible nuclear bomb with not much difference. Midge is inherently a bit less likable than either Grant or Leah, as she is very mistrustful of others and takes a long time to share information such as Chicago might be hit by a nuclear detonation. I did understand her frustration at companions that wanted to help every single stranger they came across that was hurt. The actions of Owen to decide in the midst of post-EMP chaos and the need to get out of the city ASAP, to resume being a police officer and challenge a large crowd of looters was beyond crazy. I like Danny, though he needs to continue to focus on the goal at hand which is not to get incinerated or radiated.
