A girl with learning disabilities was having a very bad day. Her best friend was not too happy either: the two had gotten into a tiff and found themselves squarely in the principal’s office. “You know, it’s so much work to be your friend,” said her acquaintance in exasperation. Rick Lavoie realized this statement would make a very apt title for the book he was writing. When most educators speak of learning disabilities, they refer to the condition in academic terms. Others focus on taming the “wild animal” of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). What Rick Lavoie has done is to present learning disabilities from the perspective of the child and urges adults to adopt the same empathy and advocate for these children – helping them find social success. In the past, conventional wisdom held that a lack of social competence and rejection were consequences of the child’s learning disability (LD). Many other educators believed that a child’s LD caused academic failure, which – in turn – caused social isolation. What Mr. Lavoie found, however, was that social challenges remained, even when the child was fortunate enough to be in a school environment that allowed him to experience academic success. In other words, Mr. Lavoie found that there was “a direct link between LD and social incompetence.” The importance of social skills cannot be underestimated – even more than academic subject mastery, these skills enable or prevent one form experiencing success in all areas of life. With assistive technology, a child can overcome many academic and physical disabilities, but social skills pose a much different and greater challenge. Only through extremely patient adult support can a child learn to find ways for compensating for his or her social deficiencies. There are four key areas of social skills one needs to master to enjoy success at home, in school, at work, and in the community. • Joining or entering a group • Starting and maintaining friendships • Resolving conflicts • Tuning into the requirements of social skills. The question arises: why teach social skills? • Children with poor social skills resolve conflict through aggression rather than negotiation, resulting in teasing and rejection among peers. Even worse, this inability can lead to criminal behavior in later years. • A child’s poor social skills affect all family members. • Nearly every situation and environment in which one finds oneself requires a degree of social competency. • A child can compensate for most disabilities, through habit or assistive technology, but not for a lack of social competence. • Strong social skills will determine a child’s future success, happiness, and acceptance. However, many common popular strategies, no matter how well intentioned, are ineffective. These include forcing the child into social situations and behavior-modification approaches, especially those involving external rewards. What does work? Concrete positive feedback changes behavior; negative feedback only stops it for the time being. Adults should reward direction, not perfection, Mr. Lavoie emphasizes. Children with a LD also need a predictable and structured environment and approach. Lavoie advocates using what he refers to as a “social autopsy,” a reflection whereby the child and adult reviews and analyzes a social situation as to what went wrong, what events led to the error, and what would be a more constructive and effective way of handling the situation when it occurs again. Thus, social miscues become “teachable moments.” Or, to quote, Mr. Lavoie, “Kids need love most when they deserve it least.” This sentiment, as well as the use of the term friend in the title, reflect Mr. Lavoie’s deep compassion and understanding of children, seeing issues from the perspective of the child, for which he has earned fame and respect in his early PBS videos, How Difficult Can This Be?: The F.A.T. City Workshop and When the Chips Are Down. My son is not ADHD or LD, but he does have problems with social situations, organizational skills, short attention span, etc. This book addresses a lot of those things. A good portion of the book does not apply to my son because academically he is ahead of his peers and this book assumes that kids with social deficiencies also suffer academically. There are several chapters devoted to specific LDs which I skipped. This book helped me to be more understanding of children with attention problems because there are neurological reasons that make it very difficult for them to make socially acceptable decisions and remain focused on tasks. In the beginning there is a long list of behaviors that these children have and so many of them described my son.One part that I found very useful was the part in the introduction that explains why punishment does not correct poor behavior patterns. It will stop it for that episode, but not have lasting results. Also you should not say, for example, "If you behave in the restaurant then you can get dessert." Not getting dessert would be punishment. The child will be resentful and probably act the same way at the next restaurant. You should explain the expectation beforehand and then if the child behaves you would say, "You have been so good that I think you deserve some dessert." The child will feel a since of accomplishment which leads to them wanting to behave better.Also in the introduction is a 5 step approach of how to analyze with your child a social problem he encountered to help him figure out on his own what he did wrong and what he should have done.Another part that was extremely useful was the chapter on having friends over for visits and house "rules" you get your child in the habit of following so your child becomes a good host.All in all this is one of the best books I have read on helping children cope with attention and social problems.

Fan-fan-fantastic! So much insight into the social struggles of LD kids and so deeply helpful. The best advice I've ever gotten for helping my ADHD son along. I have had particular help with Rick' social autopsy advice. Love this book!

Explains so much why kids have trouble making and keeping friends. A comfort to parents that they have done nothing wrong. A must read for school administrators. Very well written and easy for the layman to understand.

I'm disappointed with the book, it is missing pages 235-266, and it wasn't on the description. The book has a sticker that the book was inspected, but maybe they need better inspection! Unfortunately, the price of the book was more expensive when I realize about this issue and I decided to keep it because that was my only option with a 20% partial refund.

The foreign travel section is nice because travelers can quickly turn to the part of the globe in which they are visiting and lookup breweries to visit. The sorting of the United States breweries, which are listed alpha by city, would have been better had it been sorted first by region, and then by city, but it’s still useful like it is. Oh, and the things to do nearby is a good idea because it helps lead tourists to other places of interest that are not focused on beer, but are certainly worth seeing.Where Global Beer Tour falters a bit is with the actual entries themselves. The amount of information on each brewery is far too brief- only a couple short paragraphs, in some instances. This isn’t enough to really get to know a brewery on a personal level and to entice me to want to visit. But I think the greatest problem I have with Global Beer Tour is the lack of breweries covered and nowhere is this clearer then with the United States. The book highlights some of the best- known breweries in America’s most popular beer cities, but far too many are overlooked. Yes, they covered the super heavyweights like San Diego, Denver, and Portland, Oregon. But cities like Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and others receive no mention at all. And when you consider the thousands of operating breweries in the United States, the fact that only about thirty- six are highlighted in this book, well, it just leaves you yearning for more.Overall, however, I cannot say that Global Beer Tour is bad book because it isn’t. There is still some useful information here and the pictures are helpful. The writing is good as well and I like that the guide tries its best to cover a diverse set of breweries in different sections of the world. The low number of breweries receiving coverage and the scant amount of information on some of them makes the book less appealing than it would otherwise be, but there is enough good to give this book a middle rating and small recommendation.

Challenging, excellent and SOOOO needed in today's world considering the speed and direction in which this world is spiraling towards all "Revelation" has prophesied.... Life is difficult and seems to be getting more difficult every year as our culture pulls further and further away from and disrespecting the teaching of Christ. Christian families often don't seem to be doing any better. The author is excellent in teaching: Our Battle is NOT against Flesh and Blood, but against Spiritual Forces....etc... Anyone whom considers themselves to be a "Follower of Christ, a Believer" should read this book... But it is only for the "serious", those willing to be honest with exactly where they are and open to what the "Bible actually teaches" about "battles, spiritual warfare" etc... We need to learn how to invite, listen to, and follow the guidance of Christ's Holy Spirit (as Christ Himself promised to us) in order to be able to live victoriously and to know how to pray for those we love and care for, our families, marriages, leaders, etc... "Not my Might, Not by Power, BUT By My Spirit Says the Lord!" Amen.

I watched this video teaching as a relatively new Christian (5 years) in the early 1980's and was greatly set in the correct mindset about our place in Christ as a believer...Once told, there's no turning back from this seminal teaching and it's proper focus as one who is a supernatural being in the image of God and of His Kingdom.Dean Sherman makes this matter-of-fact expose' for us to digest and win the world once you've come to understand it's right relationship to us who are 'saved'.Excellent!

Great book to teach on spiritual warfare. The enemy is always out there trying to destroy those who love God. This book is the best I have ever read on spiritual warfare, in my walk with the Lord that started over 40 years ago. It is not scary, just factual and informative. EXCELLENT. We all need this in our walk, especially as things get worse in the world.

Fantastic book and one every believer should read. Our warfare is not with flesh and blood but with the unseen forces of evil. The book does not look for a demon behind every bush but realistically examines spiritual warfare and how we can be more effective.

I've watched Dean Sherman's dvd series on Spiritual Warfare a few times now and have been immensely challenged and encouraged by it. I just received the book recently, and having both is even better! So practical, Biblical and easy to understand.If you've read the book but haven't seen the dvd series, I'd highly recommend finding it and watching it. If you've seen the dvd series but haven't read the book, the book will help to cement the principals from the dvd teachings. The content is similar but not exact.

This is a fascinating book about how the reality of the spiritual battle going on all around us effects everything in our world and how we NEED to be educated about it and be participating so we can live in victory and be effective in our prayer life and the way we live. It imparts an understanding about the way our world looks and works that makes sense but you just have not probably thought of things this way before. I highly recommend watching or listening to the video/audio series that goes along with each chapter in this book as it will expand your understanding significantly. Highly recommended.

This book is awesome, real answers not some spooky Christian book that causes you to act, well out of balance.. So many times we tend to get out of balance in Bibical teachings & fall in the ditch on either side of the road, not this book the author stayed real. This means that if you want to practice law and you want to help people there are plenty of places for you in the profession and there are any number of books and mentors who can teach you how to run a business of the practice of law.That being said, it's really dumb today to get yourself in debt by going to "famous" law schools in hopes of being in that 15%. This book should be mandatory readying for those applying to law school - not to scare you off from a great profession, but to make sure your eyes are wide open about about the lie of riches in big law firms.for most of you aspiring lawyers you will be much better off finding a reasonably priced law school, taking some business classes along the way, and figuring out how to help people, make money and have a good quality of life. There are thousands of lawyers across the United States who are leading THAT life today.

Anybody in or around the legal profession knows that there are too many law school graduates, with too few skills, vying for too few legal jobs. Some of those graduates aren't so new anymore either, having graduated years ago. At the same time, the pyramid scheme that was Big Law is collapsing as the professional services economy changes for lawyers, as it is for everybody else (physicians, consultants, etc.) The book, however, offers mostly opinion, anecdote and amateur data to support its points and thesis. It's an interesting read, but the writing is mediocre. Most important, the author fails to consider his thesis in the context of the overall professional services economy: It's changing for everybody. A better read would be one that addresses what the future of the legal profession looks like and why (for example, law firms as companies that produce legal services (like modern physician practices), more lawyers using legal skill sets in non legal jobs, etc.)

It has a lot of solid points but this book is primarily focused on "big firm" problems, which is fine as far as it goes. It doesn't go very far in several other directions, where most American lawyers practice. It really doesn't touch much on solo and small firm life. From Legal Zoom reducing the need for lawyers, to increased tort reform limiting incomes, it completely misses the total failure of the ABA and most State Bars to protect the interests of MOST of their members on these fronts---as well as the inherent conflict this lack of State Bar representation creates between mega firms and solos. It also doesn't address the law school tuition problem: Every year there is still an army of people who take the LSAT and going on to Law School at places where they will have little to no chance of getting a high paying job upon graduation. But it's an excellent start. Bravo.

I think I agree with other reviewers - I wish the author had been more concise. He repeated himself more often than necessary. Also, other than law school, the author only talks about big law, which as he often points out is only 15% of lawyers. It would have been good to hear more about other parts of the profession.

Fantastic book that should be required reading for any law firm managing partner, board or management committee member at a firm of more than 25 lawyers. It's bad news for most, but an amazing opportunity for those willing to make the tough cultural changes and put clients first--and not just claim that on their web sites...

Good to know what you're getting into.

Prof. Harper’s book clearly states that the legal profession is big trouble because the law schools are simply pumping out more lawyers than needed. The data he complied and presented is clear and compelling evidence that the law school industry is failing its customers, the students. Moreover, he makes and wins the argument that the traditional three year academic focused law school curriculum is completely out of touch with the realities and needs of the actual workplace. The book should not dissuade anyone from seeking a legal education if they really want to be an attorney, but rather, a student needs to obtain some practical skills before graduating if he or she wants a decent paying job upon employment.
